Then I will let the families know we will not be in a position to
make an award until at least the spring, and once we get to the point
of soliciting new applications I will inquire with them whether they
still wish to be considered. In the mean time Jen, can we have the
application page with FACTfamily disabled so I don't keep getting new
applications?

Subject: Re: [rdischolarship] Taking Over the RDI Scholarship Fund
Hi Heidi, I don’t think we’ll be in a position to give out any awards until the Spring. It will take some time to get the new organization up and running and secure some initial funding. Nicole
We currently have 30 or so applicants for the RDI scholarship and I still get a new one every now and then. Originally we were hoping to make an award over the summer, but we held off due to lack of funds. I'm wondering what the current funding situation is like and whether or not we can make an award now, or whether Nicole and her group will have the new non-profit put together quickly enough that we should hold off until then. I would like to update all those families who have already applied.

Hey-- we have been without power for 4.5 days-- just got it back on-- yipeee!! I think what you say sounds great, Nicole. I do not think anyone at FACT family is able to help this fund keep going. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.... take care, Jen

As I mentioned to some of you early in the summer, my staff and I
have been playing around with the idea of taking over the scholarship
fund. Jen Gerson asked me months ago if this is something I'd be
willing to do, and I've been thinking about how to best make it work.
I believe this is an important issue and I'd like to see it flourish.
What I am prepared to do is form a non-profit here in Michigan (where
my clinic is located) so the scholarship fund is it's own entity. I
have support staff who can work on the incorporation paperwork, etc.
I will make myself the incorporator and then form a board consisting
of parents, professionals, and other interested parties from within

Hey, Nicole. I think that your help in running the fund would be fabulous.....
anything you find out about establishing a separate nonprofit would be so wonderful. If you and your staff have time to get this going, a lot of families could benefit. Take care, Jen
Hi Everyone, I just wanted to let you know that my staff and I have been kicking around the idea of stepping up to run the scholarship fund. We’ve been thinking about it since Jen sent me an email a couple of weeks ago asking if I’d be interested in doing it. It’s not something I could do on my own due to my already hectic schedule, but as a staff we feel we could do it. One of the things we’d like to do, though, is consider setting up the fund as it’s own non-profit rather than running it through FACT Family. I’m interested in people’s thoughts on this – both setting it up as it’s own entity and our clinic staff stepping up to run the fund. Thanks - Nicole

Hey, Kathy. I am definitely not in the Wright's league!!! Thanks so much for wanting to be involved. We would be honored to have you take over as the new contact person. Any suggestions on how to get that word out, Bev? I would bet that just notifying the RDI community about a new contact person/ head of the scholarship fund may help generate some donations! Should I post the news on the parent forum of the rdios? I have tried to recruit Nicole to be a fundraising chairperson-- she definitely appears to have the talent for effective communication! Have you guys subscribed to their newsletter? Seems to be informative.... thanks so much to all who have given of their time to help get the scholarships going, take care, Jen
Hey Jen Well, unfortunately to raise Millions you sort of have to have connections lol and the Wrights do! So if you guys are thinking to get someone to raise money like that, Im not you gal lol
I am interested in keeping this going till someone who may have some talent at fundraising wants to take it under their wing..... :)
Hey, Kathy and Heidi and others. Sorry that I am just getting your posts (one of THOSE days at work). Kids finally in bed.
Last year, private donors donated over half of the money. The annual conference was also a big donor (thanks, Kathy), along with additional money from Mary Kay and a couple of other "corporate" donations.
I think it would be great to have an energetic fund-raising chairperson, who might come up with one or two events each year (? the T-shirt or stationary ideas, and/or some sort of national walk). I am floored by the amount of money national organizations like Autism Speaks raises (millions each year). Unfortunately, I lack the organizational skills and time to be such a person.... thanks, Jen

I could *advertise* this on the new group? I dont mind being *part* of the committee, but as far as fund raising, not sure what else could be done? Are we talking just writing letters to companies?
I would ditto the message by Heidi. I was hoping that another volunteer with some ability for fund raising, coupled with a bit of time (that nobody has!!) would step forward and help the fund out. Apparently, all of us are to our limit. I think that perhaps another group will need to be started to bring this forward, or start a new fund.
Thanks so much to all who have worked on this in the past. It is certainly not too late to keep it going if anyone is able to do so......
BTW, Kath's new group is fantastic. Hope to have more time for that in the future!!!!! take care, Jen

I can see why you originally set the fund up through her agency, because it
was a quick way to get things up and running. We are looking into what the
process is for establishing it as a nonprofit. I'll let you know what we

Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to let you know that my staff and I have been kicking around the idea of stepping up to run the scholarship fund.

Hello. I will forward your message to Linda Andron. Last time I checked (a few months back), you could go thru the Fact Family website to donate. Linda, is that still true? Thanks, Jen

I think the annual conference I raised 500, and then there was a donor that I believe gave 2000?? I also donated from Mary Kay but that was like 70 dollars.
I did order a fundraiser package that was free, just to see what ideas were there.
Im still not if I can go to the annual conference....
But if it is a matter of closing shop, I would rather keep it open and so would be ok with being named the contact person.
I think figuring out what needs to be done in terms of fundraising is part of what needs to be done :).
Does anyone know where the bulk of the funds came from last year? was it the RDI conference? Is anyone from this group attending this year?
I remember in the past people had thrown out all sorts of ideas for fundraising, maybe those are still accessible in the archives for this group.

I had just asked Jen about the financial state of the fund. It seems
there is currently very little money. As everyone probably knows Jen
is looking to relinquish her role and is not able to spearhead a
funding effort. It looks like unless someone is willing to come
forward and take charge of fundraising we will not be able to offer
any more scholarships. To date we have just over 20 applicants. If
anyone out there is willing and able to get involved with fundraising
for the RDI scholarship fund, this is the time to speak up!
