Hi, Nicole. As you know, I have not had much time to contribute to running the
scholarship fund. Linda Andron (Fact Family) just emailed me about the small
amount of money left in the fund, and asked whether we are interested in keeping
it going.
Your wonderful efforts tell me that you may be the person for running the
fund.... would be interested in being the "chairman/person" for the fund?
Thanks, Jen

Hi Everyone, I want to let you know that we are having a great response to the campaign we are running this month to support the scholarship fund. I'd like to ask for your help in the next few days to get this information out to as many people as possible before the end of April. We have one week left and I'd like to really get the word out there! I'm including a press release (below) we put together about the promotion so you can see it. If you belong to any message boards, groups, etc. please get the information on there for people - all they need to do is go to www.horizonsautism.com Thanks! Nicole
Scholarship Support From Autism Treatment Clinic
Horizons Developmental Remediation Center Launches International Autism Awareness Campaign to Provide Funding for Treatment
Caledonia, Michigan, April 17, 2008—In honor of Autism Awareness Month, Horizons Developmental Remediation Center is helping raise funds for an organization that provides treatment scholarships to families affected by autism and related disabilities. Currently, at least one in every 150 children is diagnosed on the autism spectrum. This dramatic rise has significantly increased the need for treatment options, and for support of families to access those treatments.
To support the efforts of the scholarship fund, Horizons Developmental Remediation Center is making a donation for every person who signs up to receive their free online newsletter. On the Horizon is a weekly email newsletter for parents and others affected by autism or other developmental disabilities who want simple, effective strategies to reduce stress, support their child's development, and improve quality of life for the whole family. Individuals can learn more about the campaign and register for the newsletter at www.horizonsautism.com.
The RDI® Scholarship Fund was founded by parents to provide financial support for families who want to pursue treatment through the Relationship Development Intervention® Program. This world-renowned program is the only treatment that provides parents with the tools to effectively correct the core features of autism spectrum disorders. "A critical aspect of the RDI® Scholarship Fund is raising money so that we can reach out to more families. We can effectively carry out our mission because of generous donations from individuals and businesses like the Horizons Developmental Remediation Center," says RDI® Scholarship Fund committee member Kathy Darrow.
Founded in 2003 by Nicole Beurkens, the Horizons Developmental Remediation Center serves families who are committed to understanding the most current brain and child development research, working on correcting their child's deficits to the greatest extent possible, and achieving a satisfying quality of life for all family members. Families benefit from the guidance and expertise of the highly sought-after clinicians on staff at Horizons. Nicole Beurkens, Director of the Center, says, "We believe very strongly in the mission of the RDI® Scholarship Fund to provide access to families with financial limitations. This month we are excited to play a role in helping fulfill this mission. The campaign not only raises money for this important cause, but will continue to deliver information about autism and treatment to everyone who signs up for the newsletter. We look forward to making a significant contribution to the scholarship fund, and increasing autism awareness at the same time."

Hello. I wanted the group to know that the 2007 scholarship money has
been distributed to 3 families chosen by our selection group. A few
members of the committee are trying to coordinate sending the "Do
Something Daily" calendars to the remaining families who applied last
year.
This year's applications will be coordinated by Heidi Hofer. I know
how busy you are, Heidi, and greatly appreciated your willingness to
sacrifice time to help our families.
As I have had to add an extra day of work each week to my oncology
practice, I will have even less time this year to devote to the
scholarship work. I would encourage anyone who is able to serve our
families to step forward at this time and get the scholarship program
rolling! A new "chairperson" is truly needed.
Many thanks to Bev, Heidi, Penny, and Kathy for all of your help.
Happy New Year to everyone! Jen
Hey-- I am still waiting to hear from Linda to clear up the exact amount that we had in the fund, so we will not be able to know how much we need until then. Take care, Jen

THANKS, Rana! Actually, as it turns out, Heidi was able to compile the list as she went through and notificed recipients !! THANKS, Heidi. ! :o)
However, she found that rather than 18 people, there were actually 27! So now I think we are needing donations to cover this !!

Hello. Wanted everyone to know about updates on the scholarship
fund. Our subcommittee has voted to award scholarships to two
families. These families will be notified today.
We also will be notifying the families who applied and will not get
scholarships this year. We will be sending them notification, a "Do
Something Daily Calendar," and encouraging them to apply next year.
I would again encourage anyone who is interested to volunteer to
help with the fund next year. One area of new interest should be
active fundraising (anyone who is able to organize a national "RDI
Walk" would likely be able to raise a lot for our families). Heidi
Hofer, who has been a lot of help to the "selection" subcommittee this
year, will be the director of the applications.
Thanks to everyone who has helped during our attempts to start up
the fund. I hope that everyone has a wonderful holiday season. Take
care, Jen
Hi Bev,
I checked out the flip site. THere is a donation program geared
towards non profits and NGOs(non gevernmental organizations. It says
that it will be up and running in Dec 07 but when I clicked on it the
link didn't work. I will ask that my local ARC send a request through
my son's service coordinator again with the local and US wide request
for donations as well. Hopefully we will get a donation. My local
ARC has been trying local sources such as the Lion's club to get
funding for my supervision family for a camcorder, but nothing has
come through yet. When something does I will let you know so that a
larger statewide request could be made to that organization.

Just an idea, but I wondered if something like the Do Something Daily Calendars
would be a
possibility to "award" families and provide some encouragement:
http://www.horizonsdrc.com/store.html
Wonder if we could get a bulk price from Nicole? Does the Scholarship Fund have
any money
left at all to award a few of these??

Hi Bev,
Yes, there was news back from Sony. Unfortunately, it was not
favorable. They basically said that they had already fulfilled all of
their donations for the year. They made no mention of trying again
for next year.
Do you have any idea who the manufacturer is for the $100 camera
mentioned as being good on the OS? I figured that could be the next
corporation to request a donation from sometime in Jan/Feb for video
cameras. There is not much money in the scholarship fund to make a
difference, but a video camera could be a nice enticement for a family
on the edge financially to try out RDI(and perhaps we could get a
product easier than cash).
Have a nice Holiday, Bev.

Hi Robin,
I'm not sure we have a central place yet for links on the RDIos, but that's a
great idea for
when we have it. Also, a file on the RDIos is another good idea, but not sure
how parents
could electronically fill it out .. might be simpler for them to go to FACT
family site for
now.
Any news back from Sony?

Hello. I have been informed by Linda Andron that our fund only has
approximately 1600. She tells me that out of this money, approximately
1200 can be awarded.
My proposal (perhaps you can put this in the newsletter, Bev) is that
we close applications for this year. We can potentially reopen for
applications next year.
Our volunteer "subcommittee" for applications is presently going thru
the applications. The smaller group feels that awarding 2 bigger
scholarships is more likely to reach those in need than trying to do
the minischolarships. Please share any opinions you might have that
differ from the above! We will plan on notifying 2 families for awards
within the next few weeks.
My hope is that next year, more fundraising can be undertaken. I
hope that perhaps a parent with more time and talent than I have for
this venture might be willing to take "over the reins" and get this
fund moving! Anyone willing to spearhead next year is encouraged to
step forward for the chance to truly make a difference in a deserving
family.
As usual, any comments from the group are welcomed. Take care, Jen
Hey-- I think the mini-scholarships are a great idea. What do the others think? Perhaps this could be a separate award for families who could be "nominated" by their consultants.
We have been at a standstill with the scholarships as we wait for verification from Linda as to the amount we can award. Heidi Hofer has graciously volunteered her time to help coordinate the applications for the scholarships.
Thanks, Bev, for your input. Anyone who has any more input or suggestions, please share. Take care, Jen
Subject: [rdischolarship] Re: Setting a deadline for applications for this year
I've been thinking more about the Scholarship Fund, lately, due to hearing about families who are concerned about being able to afford the RDIos.. I am not sure I have any great ideas for funding for those families... but I wondered whether the Scholarship Fund could start by just awarding 3-month scholarships ($75 US each) to those families who are already working w/ a consultant but who just can't afford an extra $25/month for the Lite version of the RDIos? (On the thread about "is this worth $50?" on the RDIos parents forum, I have provided the info to the Scholarship Fund .. but wasn't really sure when scholarships would be awarded or anything and it would be nice to be able to let people know what is happening there .. maybe we should provide an update in the newsletter??

Hi All,
Is there a file( to request Scholarship help) that can be uploaded
to the RDIos so that parents could electronically fill it out and
get it sent to you?
I remember there being a link from the FACT FAMILY WEBSITE and that
you could print out the form and mail it in (maybe I'm dreaming this
up LOL).
I think it would be a great idea to have a link directly from the
RDIos for parents to print off and send in.
I have had a donation request for Sony camcorders mailed off to Sony
(sent through the ARC of Steuben by my family's service
coordinator). I had asked for a donation for my
supervision family and suggested a larger corporate donation to the
Scholarship fund would be nice. SO far, nothing back on that front.
Thanks for your thoughts on this idea.

I think we ought to set up deadlines every 3 months or so where we review the applications that have been sent in up to that point (or maybe less frequently than that depending on how much money is available).
There are a lot of applications. One method that a lot of granting agencies use to review applications is to have a first 'triage' stage where the people looking at applications sort through which ones they think they don't even need to bother to discuss because they are sure they will not succeed. This can save a lot of work. The two ways that are usually used to do this is that we either all vote on whether an application may or may not be in the top 25% (or some other percentage), and then only consider those applications that we have voted might be in the top 25% (which in reality may be more or less than 25% of the applications). Then we would all look at those applications carefully and rank them all to come up with out finalists, whom we would them contact for more info. The other method of triage involves all of us making a decision for each application on whether it should or shouldn't be considered, then we consider only those applications where at least one person indicated they thought the application should be considered. Once we pool those applications we then all read them carefully and rank them as in the first case. I think we should have a step like this or otherwise we will never be able to agree on the finalists.
We also need to think about whether we allow applications that are received and not awarded to automatically roll into the next application pool. I think this is a reasonable thing to do, maybe once, but after that if we let this happen automatically the application will probably be out of date. We also need a way of communicating with the applicants in this case so they know whether they are still being considered, or would need to update their applications to continue to be considered.
Hey, everyone. I am still waiting to hear from Fact Family about total
donations available. What does everyone think about setting a deadline
for applications to be, say, November 15th or something? We continue
to get many applications, and will have to decide at a certain point.
Let me know what you think, thanks, Jen

Hey-- this question came up awhile back. You would need to send the check to RDI Scholarship Fund, F.A.C.T. Family, attention: Linda Andron. 1637 Malcom Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90024.
For the present time, all of the donations are made thru F. A.C.T. Family, as they are our nonprofit vehicle.
Subject: [rdischolarship] Where to send donation checks
I apologize if this is somewhere on the message boards, but what if someone wants to send a check? Where would they need to send it, make payable, etc.. Maybe we need to have this info displayed prominently on the home page of the group? Thank you!

On another note, I am waiting to here from Linda Andron what our exact totals are, so that we can go ahead and get rolling with awarding money. I will let all of you know what I hear.
Thanks again to our sparkle girl (Kath) for contributing her talents for the presentation, and to Penny and her husband for helping with the slide show.

Kind of like "scholarship readiness" help .. (ie ... this would be for those who are not successful because they aren't yet ready, not because there weren't enough funds yet!)
