I left the reference in, rather than editing it, because it make the story so realistic, and to me, the joy of the story being told truthfully from the heart, outweighed the commercial effect.
Kindly,

Just to let you know, not all dishes are 'prepared'. There are folks that will bring fresh fruit and vegetable that can be consumed.
Dale, aka the 'apple guy' who works with Plan B Organics usually comes and he brings freshly picked apples and apple cider as well as wild vegetable that are not prepared/processed in any way.Sometimes, the produce that he brings is picked the same day or the day before!
If a dish is prepared, all of the ingredients are listed for everyone's information. The raw foodist that attend normally prepare the dish immediately before they arrive or even prepare it after they have arrived.
Many people are not raw foodist and are interested in what forms of raw foodism is out there. We have an information table to provide education and other information. This would be a good opportunity for the Natural Hygene group to let everyone know what, 'natural hygene' is all about!
Plus it is a good social opportunity to mix with other raw foodists and lots of fun generally! Hope you can make it!
Just to fully inform people, here are as few guidelines.
As Natural Hygienists, we regard these generally accepted raw potlucks as "transitional" to our health-building ways. They are great for socializing with similar-minded people (organic raw vegans).
However, many of us cannot tolerate salt, sea salt, spices and other condiments, which are irritants and destroy the natural flavours of everything they touch, and as hygienists, we refrain from poor food combinations and have no more than four foods at a meal for our best health through maximum digestibility.
And another critical point that we observe is oxidation. Dr. Herbert M. Shelton writes in Superior Nutrition, p.78,
Fruits and vegetables are surrounded with a tough outer capsule or skin that is designed as an effective barrier against oxidation. But when this is broken, or the fruits and vegetables are cut or peeled, this permits oxygen to reach their inner and now unprotected structures, so that, they begin immediately to oxidize, consequently to lose food value.
So if foods are "prepared" for these "tasty" meals, how much have we really lost in their quality before they are even served?
And how well can we build and repair our own bodies' healthy cells the very best with oxidized foods?
All the best,
Dianne

Run through the rain
A little girl had been shopping with her Mom in Wal-Mart. Shemust have been 6 years old, this beautiful red haired, frecklefaced image of innocence. It was pouring outside. The kind ofrain that gushes over the top of rain gutters, so much in ahurry to hit the earth it has no time to flow down the spout.
We all stood there under the awning and just inside the door ofthe Wal-Mart.We waited, some patiently, others irritated because naturemessed up their hurried day. I am always mes merized byrainfall. I got lost in the sound and sight of the heavenswashing away the dirt and dust of the world. Memories ofrunning, splashing so carefree as a child came pouring in as awelcome reprieve from the worries of my day.
The little voice was so sweet as it broke the hypnotic trance wewere all caught in "Mom, let's run through the rain," she said."What?" Mom asked."Let 's run through the rain!" She repeated."No, honey.. We'll wait until it slows down a bit," Mom replied. This young child waited about another minute and repeated:"Mom, let's run through the rain,""We'll get soaked if we do," Mom said."No, we won't, Mom. That's not what you said this morning,"the young girl said as she tugged at her Mom's arm.
This morning? When did I say we could run through the rain andnot get wet?"Don't you remember? When you were talking to Daddy abouthis cancer, you said, 'If God can get us through this,he can get us through anything!"
The entire crowd stopped dead silent. I swear you couldn't hearanything but the rain. We all stood silently. No one came orleft in the next few minutes.Mom paused and thought for a moment about what she wouldsay. Now some would laugh it off and scold her for being silly. Some might even ignore what was said. But this was a momentof affirmation in a young child's life. A time when innocenttrust can be nurtured so that
it will bloom into faith."Honey, you are absolutely right. Let's run through the rain. IfGOD let's us get wet, well maybe we just needed washing," Momsaid.
Then off they ran. We all stood watching, smiling and laughingas they darted past the cars and yes, through the puddles. They held their shopping bags over their heads just in case. They got soaked. But they were followed by a few who screamedand laughed like children all the way to their cars. And yes, I did. I ran. I got wet. I needed washing.
Circumstances or people can take away your materialpossessions, they can take away your money, and they can takeaway your health. But no one can ever take away your preciousmemories...So, don't f orget to make time and take theopportunities to make memories everyday. To everythingthere is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven.A friend sent this to me to remind me of life. Hope you enjoyit.
I HOPE YOU STILL TAKE THE TIME TO RUN THROUGH THERAIN.
They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour toappreciate them, a day to love them, but then an entire life toforget them. Send this to the people you'll never forget andremember to also send it to the person who sent it to you. It'sa short message to let them know that you'll never forget them.
If you don't send it to anyone, it means you're in a hurry.
Take the time to live!!!
Keep in touch with your friends, you never know whenyou'll need each other -- and don't forget to run in the rain!

Though I am in agreement with the author that regular, frequent colonics are perhaps not good for the colon, I have for 32 years benefitted from occasional colonics. I have found them to be particularly helpful during or toward the end of a fast. And I have also found coffee enemas to be a powerful help in maintaining good liver health.
Date: Tue, 7 Jun 2005 06:52:25 -0600 From: mark.ansara@... To: Dianne Knight <raw_foods_natural_hygiene@...> Subject: The case against colonics
Dear Dianne:
As I promised, here is my article reviewing the case against the use of colonics and enemas. This is largely based upon Dr. Shelton's teachings on this subject, although some of it is my own reasoning and the result of brainstorming with you. I think that it pretty well summarizes the arguments and position of Natural Hygiene on this subject.
To begin with, colonic irrigation poses a risk of damaging the colon: there is a possibility of the pressure puncturing the wall of the colon. This would result in infection occurring and it may well prove fatal to the victim. I admit that in the hands of an experienced therapist, such risks are small, but I
have always felt that it is wise to avoid unnecessary risks.
Secondly, as we have discussed, enemas and colonics may force waste back up into the small intestine, where the toxic wastes may be absorbed into the body. Let us remember that by the time feces reach this stage, the waste is already in a much more advanced state of decay than earlier in its passage through the bowels. Therefore, it is much more toxic and dangerous than previously. This fact should indicate that colonics are a potentially dangerous procedure, despite the benefits claimed by their proponents.
Thirdly, some colon therapists use various substances (other than plain water) for the colonic. An example that comes to mind is the coffee enema. These therapists claim additional benefits from the use of these substances. As a hygienist, I would point out that such substances are in themselves toxic, and if there is any apparent benefit to using them, that is a
sure indication of toxic effects in the body. This is on the principle that only the living body can act, and the inert, lifeless substances that we use as stimulants are incapable of performing any actions; thus, the stimulation is the result of bodily action, not drug or stimulant action, which is a myth. Introducing more toxic substances into the body cannot have any benefits, only toxic side- effects.
Next, let me mention that a former friend of mine, who believed in colonics and had undergone at least one such treatment, reported feeling much cleaner and having much more energy following the treatment. As stated, this is an indication of stimulation. The principle is the same as taking drugs as stimulants: one takes a drug or a treatment in the belief that it will make one feel better, and this is the immediate and short-term result. However, we must remember the Law of Dual Effect: that any stimulation has a two-fold and
opposite effect: the short-term effect of stimulation, followed by the long-term and more profound effect of depression or enervation. Again, to understand this effect, we must remember that the stimulant does not act upon the body - it is the body which acts. When a toxic substance enters its domain, the body will act to expel it. This requires that the already enervated body expend precious energy, thus ultimately leaving it more enervated than before. Incidentally, a check of medical textbooks reveals that the repeated and long-term use of enemas has one major side-effect: constipation. This is logical in view of what I just said about profound enervation; the colon is left in a greatly enervated state and is less able to function normally than before.
I might add here that any treatment of this kind is basically irrational: treating of symptoms and ignoring causes. This is the approach of medicine, and represents the
exact opposite of the rational approach to disease. The hygienic way, which is tested and proven, is to ignore symptoms and remove causes. That way, the symptoms (effects) will disappear of their own accord; no specific treatment is necessary. (And as a bonus there are no side-effects.)
Dr. Shelton mentions a couple of other problems with this sort of treatment. He states that colonics tend to weaken the walls of the colon. He also indicates another side-effect of this treatment: visceroptosis, or the descent of the viscera, i.e., the internal organs and structures of the body. It is easy to see that this may cause other problems due to pressure on the organs that are no longer in their normal positions. (This refers to many different organs, not just the bowels.) Incidentally, Shelton denies the validity of X-ray photos of the colon showing it heavily impacted with uneliminated fecal matter, such as were used by advocates of
colonic irrigation like Dr. Norman Walker. He says that this is merely a fantasy, and he had a medical doctor who backed him up on this point, saying that they do not see indications of such a phenomenon during autopsies.
In summary, I think that we must conclude that the use of enemas and colonics is not justified by a consideration of all of the facts. I also wish to point out that an enervated organ needs rest, not stimulation or treatment. It is best to leave it alone and let nature take its course. This is the position of Natural Hygiene, and it has proven to the wisest course through the long history of the movement.
Sincerely,
Mark Ansara

Dear Dianne:
As you requested, here is the copy of Dr. Shelton's article on epilepsy from my Shelton articles database. I think that it is very good. . . .
Sincerely,
Mark Ansara
******************************************************************************************************** 17) “Growing Out of Epilepsy,” by Dr. Herbert M. Shelton
Source: Dr. Shelton’s Hygienic Review,
Vol. 1, No. 4, Dec. 1939
The layman calls epilepsy, “fits,” “seizures” and “falling sickness.” The ancients called it the “sacred disease” and left its care in the hands of the priests rather than in that of the physicians. At one period the ancients thought epilepsy was due to evil spirits that had gained control of the body of the victim. Today the medical profession admits that the cause of epilepsy is still unknown, while treatment, which is highly unsatisfactory, is confined to suppression of its symptoms. The disease is considered incurable. We are not willing to admit either that the cause is unknown, or that it is incurable.
Epilepsy belongs to that group of maladies called neuroses, or nervous affections. It is characterized by periodic convulsive paroxysms, due to functional derangements of a reflex nature. Pathologists have sought the cause of epilepsy in post-mortem studies of epileptics, but have not found it due to the fact that the examination of an organ after death does not show functional derangement and cannot show the reflex irritations that throw the patient into convulsions.
Oneformofepilepsyknownas“Jacksonian,”is conceded to be due
one-half of the body; either the right side, or the left side. The muscular spasms are more or less severe, but the patient does not lose consciousness. He is a witness to his own spasms. This type of epilepsy is rare.
The common form of the disease is divided into two general types. The moresevereform, which the layman calls “falling sickness,”is known
andtheconvulsivemovementsareslight – more of a stiffening ofthe
muscles – and there are cases where consciousness is not lost. These patients may fall on the street before a car or other passing vehicle, or in some other place that may cause them severe injury. One form of this severe type of epilepsy is the nocturnal type. This is the safer form, for the patient has his convulsions at night while asleep in bed.
The light form of epilepsy is known as “Epilepsia Mitior,” or petit mal. Convulsions in these cases may be very mild, last less than half a minute, the momentary loss of consciousness not being enough for the patient to fall, if standing, nor to lose the trend of conversation. Or this form may be characterized by staggering and confusion and the sufferer may not be able to resume the conversation in which he was previously engaged until he is reminded of the subject. The lighter form may gradually develop into the severer form if its causes are not removed.
There is nothing resembling regularity in the development of epileptic convulsions. In some cases they often occur in “bouts,” one, or two or three taking place every few days, or they may be separated from each other by weeks, sometimes by months, and occasionally by years. A patient may have two or three sets of fits in a week or in a month and have none the following week or month.
It is said that the light and severe types of the disease may exist at the same time. But this does not mean that the patient has two diseases, two epilepsies. It only means that he has both light and severe paroxysms. The light form may exist for years without a severe “seizure,” or the severe form may persist for years without a severe “attack,” or light and severe convulsions may alternate.
In the light form, petit mal, the patient may have a half-a-dozen or a dozen convulsions in a day. Indeed he may become so intensely sensitive that he has as many convulsions in an hour. He may be so sensitive that the slightest shock or irritation out of the regular routine may cause a momentary loss of consciousness. Such a patient may suffer a severe convulsion every two to four weeks, or at shorter and longer intervals.
In the severe form, grand mal, the convulsion is preceded by a short cry or shriek, like a cry of distress. The patient usually falls forward on his face, which is often injured. It is no uncommon thing for these patients to fall on a stove and be badly burned. Due to the spasmodic contractions of the muscles of the jaw, these patients often severely bite the tongue. In frequent cases the tonic contraction of the jaw muscles is so severe that the jaw is set, and, due to the setting or spasmodic contraction of the muscles of the chest, breathing is suspended for half a minute.
Due to suspended respiration and even circulation, the face, which at first is pale, turns red, livid, then purple, and, at times, almost black. The pulse becomes very rapid and the pupils dilate. Indeed there is over-dilatation of the pupils in all forms of epilepsy, as in many other nervous diseases.
Because the muscles on one side of the body are affected more than those of the other side, the head is turned to one or the other shoulder in a jerking way. The eyes roll and have a wild expression. The cheeks as well as the tongue are often severely bitten. In severe cases there is always foaming at the mouth, the foam being tinged with blood from tongue or cheek. Breathing is stertorous and these cases are often mistaken for apoplexy or drunkenness. There have been cases in which bones were broken or dislocated, so severe were the muscular contractions. Often the sphincters relax and there is involuntary emptying of the bladder and colon.
The “seizure” may last from a few seconds to a half-hour. One, two, or three dozen convulsions may be required before calm is restored to the nervous system. In cases where dozens are required the patient may die of rupture of blood vessels in the brain (apoplexy), rupture of the heart, uremic coma, shock, or from too long suspension of the vital functions by the prolonged tonic spasm, so that vital activities cannot be resumed after it has passed off.
When the convulsion subsides, the body relaxes, consciousness returns and the patient may fall into a deep sleep that may last for several hours. Upon awakening, if the convulsions have not been too prolonged, the patient may appear quite well, and except for a tired feeling and muscular soreness, may feel well. Indeed many cases recover from the convulsions in a few minutes and immediately resume their regular activities, as though nothing had occurred.
In cases where the convulsions last several minutes the patient is worn out and, even though he sleeps heavily for some time after the spasms cease, he may be tired and his muscles be stiff and bruised and his tongue sore, for several days afterward. In the more severe cases the patient may recover from the convulsions very excited and lapse into a severe form of mania, which lasts one or two days, ending in death; or he may go on living but requiring constant attention and attendance, due to the mental derangement.
The functional characteristic in all forms of epilepsy is a lack of nervous stability.Themanwitha normal nervous system isabletoperform
the functions of life–walking, thinking, eating, digesting, eliminating,
etc. – to mingle with people and amicably adjust himself to society. In actual life we meet with all degrees of nervous coordination or balance, ranging from a solid, stable state to one of marked instability – one easily thrown off balance.
In the epileptic we see a nervous system that is very unstable, one that is very sensitive to irritations and is thrown out of balance by things that the normal nervous system easily adjusts itself to or successfully resists. Epileptics are all neurotic. They lack strong central nervous control. When their nerve energy is drawn upon beyond a certain variable limit, they lose coordination and control. The whole motor nervous system becomes “insane.”
Epilepsy is said by many to be hereditary, while others claim that only the neurotic diathesis (tendency to nervous diseases) is hereditary. In view of our present knowledge of heredity, it is probable that both of these views are wrong. It is more probable that the nervous deficiency that constitutes the neurotic diathesis is the outcome of nutritive deficiencies before and after birth. Stable nervous systems cannot be built out of inadequate nutrition and we have enough clinical and experimental evidence to show that certain food deficiencies in the young, growing organism produce nervous impairment and convulsions. Unfortunately, most of the old ideas about hereditary disease, which were developed before we knew anything about either heredity or the effects of dietary deficiencies, persist in spite of our increased knowledge of these subjects.
Convulsions in infants and children with unstable nervous systems are frequently seen. Slight irritations, such as indigestion, a heavy meal, too much exercise, or being chilled, may bring on convulsions in some children. Undoubtedly, these are the children that give us most of our cases of epilepsy.
I have not cared for a single case of epilepsy in the whole of my professional career whose parents or grandparents had the disease or who had brothers or sisters who similarly suffered. I long ago came to the conclusion that no disease is hereditary.
In all cases of epilepsy, except the few in which injuries to the head have caused depressed fractures and other anatomical defects, there are enough errors of life practiced to account for the disease without calling in predestination or election to help explain the pitiable plight of the sufferer.
then,besubjectedtoinfluencesthat bring on apronouncedtypeof
enervation – lowered nervous energy. Enervation checks elimination, producing toxemia. This rapidly forces the nervous system into a pronounced state of lost resistance. It is then that it becomes so sensitive that unusual irritations of any nature or a slight increase of an accustomed irritation may cause a breaking up of nerve balance, a temporary loss of coordinating power.
The epileptic subject may be thrown into convulsions by overeating, improper eating, toothache, earache, or any pain, sexual indulgence, anger, sorrow, joy, overwork or overplay, excitement, adenoids, colds; in fact by any undue nervous strain. One case I cared for was thrown into a violent fit of convulsions by the application of an electric needle to the roots of some superfluous hair on the face.
Once the epileptic habit (reaction pattern, to employ a psychological term) is established, very little more irritation than one is accustomed to in daily life is enough to throw the subject into a fit. Often an unaccustomed harsh sound, a sharp word, or a slight disappointment is enough to overcome the slight resistance and bring on a convulsion.
Emotional over-irritation and lack of emotional control quickly impair the nervous system and these may also precipitate a convulsion. Psychic shock and lack of emotional poise contribute to the production and continuance of practically all so-called diseases.
Perhaps the commonest cause of epileptic convulsions is poisoning or putrefaction generated by gastro-intestinal decomposition. Too much sugar or meat often causes enough decomposition or poisoning to bring on epileptic convulsions. I recall a case which I helped care for in 1920. The epilepsy was in a young man of about twenty-five years. He had been afflicted but four or five years. We placed him on a milk diet. We soon discovered that he could take as much as six quarts of milk a day with safety, but as sure as he received seven quarts he had a fit of convulsions. We also found that he could take milk for six days and fast on the seventh and go along apparently indefinitely without a seizure, but as sure as he was allowed to have milk on the seventh day he would have one or two fits.
Always, in this case, as in many others, there was a sense of distress in the abdomen before the convulsions began. In this connection let me tell of another patient who would have actual pain in the left side of the pelvic abdomen preceding each convulsion. Any irritation – any disease capable of causing reflex irritation – in those subject to epilepsy will dissolve coordinating power and bring on convulsions. Eyestrain may excite an “attack” of epilepsy.
Most physicians concede that epileptic convulsions are precipitated by gastro-intestinal derangement – indigestion, gastric hyperacidity, intestinal fermentation, and constipation – even by very slight deviations from normal at any period of the digestive cycle.
The nervous tension produced by gambling, or by bucket-shop operations, is enough to produce epilepsy and if these things are continued, to prevent recovery. The petty thief, the smuggler, the hypocrite, the juggler of accounts, the liar, and the cheat, all if subject to epileptic convulsions, pay for their dishonesty by fits.
With an understanding of the causes of epilepsy its cure becomes evident. And the disease is curable. Practically every sufferer from epilepsy, who reads this article, may be restored to sound health and may remain free of convulsions.
The prevailing mode of treatment is such a consistent failure that one can only wonder why it is persisted in. It fritters away valuable time palliating symptoms and, due to its use of the bromides and other nerve paralyzing drugs, commonly renders the condition of the nervous system worse. Physicians frequently operate for phimosis, or remove adenoids and enlarged tonsils, or extract teeth, remove bony growths from the nose, castrate the female, operate for varicocele in the male, and fit glasses to the eyes, on the theory that these symptoms are the causes of epilepsy.
That reflex irritations from these things may precipitate a convulsion we have already explained, but these small afflictions are only local outgrowths of the same nervous impairment and toxemia, which form the basic cause of epilepsy; and unless this basic cause of all of these troubles is removed the patient will continue to have epilepsy. If the basic cause is removed, not only does the patient recover from epilepsy, but he recovers from the other troubles as well.
Tumor of the womb, ovary or tube may cause enough nervous irritation in women to dissolve coordination. In such cases, surgical removal of the tumor or of the affected organs may result in temporary respite from epileptic convulsions. However, since the surgical procedure does not remove the basic cause of epilepsy and of the source of reflex irritation, this cause, sooner or later, evolves another or other sources of reflex irritation so that the apparently cured epilepsy recurs.
Getting rid of any local “disease” by surgical removal of the diseased part, removes an exciting cause, but unless the constitutional derangement is removed the epilepsy will remain and other sources of reflex irritation will subsequently develop. Fitting glasses to the eyes is only palliative; it offers temporary relief; but it does not correct the primary derangement that permitted the eyestrain to develop.
Only by going back of these minor ailments and correcting all of the causes of ill health, can we ever hope to succeed in remedying epilepsy. It is necessary to get rid of the enervation and toxemia and to remove all of the causes of these. The whole body must be put in a state of health and maintained in this state.
As a matter of physical and mental economy, there must be a general reform in all physical and mental habits. The epileptic must stop all abuse of the body and mind. All enervating habits must be discontinued at once and permanently. Doctors who attempt to cure disease without correcting enervating habits and who treat patients for “specific diseases,” while ignoring a manner of living that makes cure impossible, will never succeed in remedying epilepsy or any other disease in their patient.
It is necessary in all cases to avoid the causes of disease. Since the cause of epilepsy is often subtle, uncertain, and obscure, both the doctor and the patient should attempt to find and remove or correct all and every enervating habit or influence, however insignificant it may appear. The plan of living should be put upon a rigidly economic basis and nerve energy conserved as much as possible.
Sensualism must be controlled. Sex abuse, both mental and physical, must be given up forever. Libertines and masturbators cannot be cured of epilepsy until cured of their wasteful sex habits. Those who constantly excite their sex functions mentally, even if they do not resort to overt sexual acts, will also fail to recover until they have educated themselves out of this bad habit.
Tobacco, tea, coffee, alcohol and like poisons lower nerve-tone and help to produce and perpetuate epilepsy. Until all poison habits are completely abandoned, the sufferer need not expect to recover.
Gross eating habits must be broken. Gluttony, irritating foods and condiments and too “rich” foods help to produce enervation and toxemia and are often the causes of the irritation that precipitates a convulsion. The putrefaction and constipation that grow out of gross eating habits are recognized as “causes” of epilepsy.
Since gastro-intestinal derangements are so nearly uniformly precedent to epileptic seizures, it is folly to look for good results in these cases without giving due attention to the amount, kind, and combination of food eaten.
Everything capable of producing reflex irritation must be overcome in order to overcome the convulsion habit. This is not to be done by cutting off a tight prepuce, saddling the nose with eye-crutches, removing the gallbladder or womb, etc., and by taking cathartics; but by restoring the whole body and all of its parts to good health.
It is often necessary to get away from family influences, for the epileptic who is pampered and indulged and weakened by misdirected sympathy cannot get well. He must learn to stand on his own.
Among the treatments employed by the ancients in the care of epileptics were fasting and prayer. On one occasion, when the disciples of Jesus, wanted to know why they had failed in their effort to cast out a “devil” from an epileptic, he told them “this kind cometh not out save by fasting and prayer.” There is nothing of more immediate benefit to the epileptic patient than fasting, while the mental calm often produced by prayer is a great aid to restoration of poise.
Every case of epilepsy should be given a long fast as the surest and most rapid means of freeing the body of excess food and of its toxic overload. This will also quickly remedy nearly all of the common sources of reflex irritation. Since the most common source of irritation is the digestive tract, nothing can more speedily benefit these patients than a properly conducted fast.
A few years ago Drs. Lenox and Cobb, of the Harvard University Medical School, conducted fasts, ranging in duration from four to twenty-one days, in twenty-seven cases of epilepsy. Their reports showed that these patients experienced improvement during the fasts, although their “seizures” recurred after the fasts. In the majority of cases, convulsions were entirely absent, or greatly reduced during the fast, but only in one case was there any permanent effect on the “seizures.” These men suggest that if the fast should be given early enough in the disease, before the convulsion habit has been established, results would be more encouraging.
Since their results are not in line with the results of those of us who regularly use fasting in this and other troubles, we must seek an explanation for their partial failure in some other direction than that of the advanced stage of the disease.
We cannot overlook the fact that most of their fasts were not long enough to give complete results. A fast of four, five, or six days is never long enough to rid the body of toxins and to clear away the sources of reflex irritation. Such short fasts would never remedy a chronically inflamed gallbladder or ovary. It is rarely enough to make any appreciable difference in bowel function, or to greatly improve digestion in cases of long-standing digestive derangement.
The epileptic patient is particularly susceptible to digestive upsets and, as pointed out above, it is folly to expect permanent results in these cases, unless the fast is followed by careful attention to the amount, kind and combinations of foods given. If the patient is taught how to eat, what to eat, when to eat or not to eat, and how much to eat, this will eventually lead to complete recovery. But if the same kind, quantity and quality of food are permitted after the fast that the patient was in the habit of eating before the fast, there will be no recovery.
It has been shown that excess nitrogen (protein) increases the frequency of paroxysms in epilepsy, whereas, an increase in bases (alkaline salts) reduces them. One egg added to the daily diet of children predisposed to spasmodic affections will give rise to spasms. When the eggs are removed from the diet the child promptly becomes normal.
In all cases of nervous impairment – epilepsy, chronic melancholia, neurasthenia, etc. – “acidosis” arises more quickly and has more powerful effects. It is undoubtedly the weakness and derangement of the nervous system in such cases that permits the earlier development of “acidosis” and that explains why the “acidosis” has such a powerful effect. “Acidosis” is especially likely to precipitate an epileptic paroxysm at night, for then the reaction of the blood is physiologically less strongly alkaline than during the day.
The weakness and derangement of the nervous system in epilepsy renders care in feeding all the more necessary and makes it equally necessary to avoid shock, emotional strain, over-stimulation, excesses, extreme exposure, and all other influences that tax or weaken the nervous system.
Finally, if all the enervating and irritating habits and influences enumerated above are not corrected and removed, these will keep up enough nervous irritation, digestive derangement and excretory inhibition to prevent recovery.
It is, of course, true that the longer the causes of epilepsy have been allowed to run, the harder it is to correct. The nervous system may ultimately become so non-resistant to irritation and the habit of convulsive repetition so firmly established, that the slightest irritating influence may unbalance coordination and initiate convulsions. It is wise, therefore, to begin the care of these cases at the very beginning and we have a right to expect better and faster results than years later, when the disease is well established. Those are most benefited by fasting whose general state is not shattered by the long-continued use of drugs and by psychic shock.
But whether the case is taken early or late, we should not lose sight of the fact that it takes time to overcome toxemia and enervation, and still more time for the nervous system to evolve out of the habit of falling into temporary states of lost coordination. How can we expect this to occur during a few days of fasting?
Restisnecessaryto restore nervous poise and this cannotbeobtained
solongas thereisany nervous irritation from any source.Emotional
over-irritation – worry, anger, jealousy, apprehension, fear, etc.; poison habits – tea, coffee, tobacco, alcohol, headache “remedies,” constipation “cures,” etc.; excesses – gluttony, sensuality, overwork, overplay, etc.; and the deficiencies – lack of fresh air, lack of sunshine, indolence, etc.; all aid in building and maintaining the constitutional derangement that is back of epilepsy. Any program of care that ignores these will inevitably fail.
The patient who returns to gluttony, sensuality, inebriety, gambling, and to his former excesses and dissipations, after he has been restored to health, will again break down his health and is likely to redevelop epilepsy. There is no cure of disease outside of removal of cause and there is no prevention of disease save by avoiding its causes.

All the best,
Dianne

We have enough feedback from Natural Hygiene Support Group members to schedule both meetings, so it is on for the 7th, tomorrow and the 14th, next week as well.
I'm glad that you are inviting your friends.
When we meet in High Park, we have the option of bringing some organically grown fresh fruits and vegetables to share. It is not a pot-luck, because it is too late for dinner for some people, just some plain healthy snacks, without carrots or other starches, because of food combining.
See you there!
Sincerely,
Dianne

Dear Friends of Natural Hygiene,
Tonight's Support Group topic is Flower
Three associations come to mind:
1. May is planting month for us to raise our organic crops and
decorative plants that will sprout up and produce flowers.
2. Symbolically, by being in tune with Nature in the outdoors,
our health will flower as we implement the natural laws that we
recognize.
3. We can consume edible flowers in our diets. (How many of you
thought of broccoli and cauliflower?)
In summary, Natural Hygiene teaches us to indulge our aesthetic
senses with flowers and appropriate surroundings in our life indoors
as well as our natural life outdoors, and in our internal environment
of our minds and spirits, to have a peaceful harmonious life.
One reference in the Toronto Natural Hygiene Library is by T.C. Fry.
T.C. Fry, was a man who thought for himself, often in opposition with
others with whom he was associated, and a popular writer and teacher
of Natural Hygiene (Life Science, as he called it), who became
involved in Natural Hygiene circa 1970, having been a businessman
living in New York City, operating a classical music record company
and selling recordings of music through the mail, and obviously
enjoying doing this, and had a good knowledge of such music.
Hence, due to his expansive thinking, in his first book, Program for
Dynamic Health –Introducing Natural Hygiene—the Proven Natural Health
System, pages 46 & 47, he writes in the chapter "An Elaboration upon
Eighteen Factors and Influences to Superb Health and Wellbeing" as
Point 18,
The human ability to appreciate beauty, art and goodness is not
unique but it is so highly developed as to place us far above the
most advanced animals. To achieve optimum health we should be
surrounded by the beauty in nature and in man's art. We should be in
association with those whose lives, personalities, attitudes and
deportment are pleasing to our social senses. Unaesthetic
surroundings, people of ugly disposition and a paucity of beauty
influences deeply and tends to likewise shape individuals.
The needs of life are this simple! Nothing is complicated about it.
It seems self-evident that these are the essential means for a happy
and healthy life. We can see that the science of health does not come
from the so-called scientific laboratories but, instead, it springs
from the laboratories of nature. Hygienists maintain that this
compromises the basic formula by which man lived in the lap of nature
while developing into the superb creature that he really is. Perhaps
we can pursue no wiser course than to cultivate optimally these
factors and influences in our pattern of living."
We will meet at Fresh by Juice for Life this month, because they are
easy to reach and open late for us. Directions are to go to 521 Bloor
St. West (east of Bathurst). They have healthy colourful, innovative
vegetarian selections. TVA members receive a discount.

The new four food groups are grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruits. Meat and dairy lose their food group status, and fruits and vegetables no longer share a single group. This straightforward proposal sets in motion the most powerful dietary policy ever, one charged with the potential to save tens of millions of lives, including your own.
In Food for Life, Dr. Barnard makes the clearest case yet for this dietary revolution. Citing overwhelming medical evidence (previously downplayed by powerful lobbying groups), Dr. Barnard reveals why a diet based on the new four food groups will sharply decrease the risk of cancer and heart disease and dramatically increase life expectancy. And, most important, the quality of those later years will take a dramatic turn toward vitality and well-being.
Dr. Barnard unveils a 21-day program for a smooth transition to the new four food groups. These foods are naturally low
in fat, cholesterol, and salt; high in fiber, vitamins, and minerals; and will enable you to eat as much as you want and still lose weight! Dr. Barnard's program takes into consideration a wide range of special needs and situations, and each daily menu and recipe shows just how enticing and flexible the new four food groups can be.
Food for Life proposes a bold new remedy for a society burdened by health problems. It also provides a specific plan for everyday people, a program full of practical and appealing suggestions for changing the way we eat. Food for Life has the power to transform the future, to give us all the opportunity for a long and vital life.
Author Information Neal Barnard, M.D., is president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. He lives in Washington, D.C.
As a highly sought-after speaker, Dr. Graham has shared his strategies for achieving optimum health and vitality with audiences at health, animal rights, environmental, and sports performance events on four continents. He is the creator of "Simply Delicious" cuisine and director of Health and Fitness Weeks, which provide Olympic-class training and nutrition for people of all fitness levels in beautiful settings around the world.
Dr. Graham is an advisor to world-class athletes and trainers from around the globe. He has trained professional and Olympic athletes from almost every sport, including tennis legend Martina Navratilova, NBA player Ronnie Grandison, and the Norwegian national bicycling team.
Dr. Graham is a founder and serves as president of Healthful Living International and is on the board of advisors of EarthSave International, Organic Athlete, and Voice for a Viable Future. He is the author of several best-selling books, including Grain Damage, Nutrition and Athletic Performance, and The High Energy Diet Recipe Guide. His articles are regularly featured in Get Fresh! and Living Nutrition magazines.
Among Dr. Graham's gifts are his ability to explain the complexities of anatomy, biology, chemistry, and physiology in terms that are easy to understand. An inspiration to others, he has followed a raw-vegan regimen for twenty-five years and has been vegetarian for over thirty years. He is living proof that eating whole, fresh, ripe, raw, organic food is the way to achieve vibrant health and vitality!
This little booklet packs a big message. The negative side of grain production and consumption is explored from angles such as the history of grain use, nutrition, ecology, energy, environment, sports performance, health, addictions, disordered eating, and much more.
Or you could do as I did, have personal consultations with the co-leader of our Toronto Natural Hygiene Support Group, Les, tel. 416-887-0333. He turned my health around from dismal to fully functioning, after I had years of attending lectures, presentations and seminars from many of the world's leaders in natural care and I had received years of patient care from several of the finest natural doctors in Toronto.

A beautiful story! Thank you for sharing it and posting it on our group website. We in the Natural Hygiene Support Group are looking for each other to strengthen each other with our similar experiences and help each other with our challenges.
Some of us choose Harvey as a guide, others Dr. Doug Graham, or Dr. Herbert Shelton, or Dr. Alec Burton, or whichever promient hygienist we each resonate with, or what best fits a particular circumstance, depending on each person's state of health and where one wants to go.
You are so right in declaring the lack of awareness in the general population. Others before you, many keeping their privacy, have had spiritual and physical awakenings too, some becoming stronger and stronger year after year.
Once a month we hold an evening meeting for 2 hours, the first Tuesday of each month in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Are you in the Greater Toronto Area?
I read the books by Harvey and Marilyn Diamond when they first came
out but I just couldn't get with the program. I was overweight and
tired of it. You would have thought that I would have jumped on the
bandwagon. No. I did what my friends did and joined WeightWatchers. I
lost...and gained it back plus more. Fast forward to March of 2005.
Almost 50(in June)and I needed a way to keep kosher. I had converted
from Catholicism to Judaism with my conversion being complete in May
2005. I wanted to have a way that I would be able to eat healthy and
keep myself spiritually centered.
Then I read Harvey Diamond's book 'Fit for Life NOT Fat for Life on
15 March 2005. This time, something happened in me. On 16 March 2005,
I started eating the way that he advocated. I haven't looked back
since! I gave up smoking right after that and I haven't had another
cigarette since. I started reading up on Natural Hygeine and I can't
believe that people are not aware of this way of eating!
I have more energy than ever, my skin has a glow and is clear, the
circles under my eyes are going away and I love the veggies and
fruits. I have told others about this and they are listening. The
best thing in the world is that I am able to keep kosher...naturally.
My Rabbi and Rebbetsin told me that many Jews do this and it is an
excellent way.
A way to be both healthy and spiritual. I couldn't ask for more!

Hi Dianne,
I joined the group a few weeks ago. I will attend on

Dear Friends of Natural Hygiene,
The best input from a member for last month's topic, Fast Food (NOT)
came from a person who says,
"I stick to the natural hygiene raw diet because I believe in it, and
I do feel better when I eat raw foods. Sometimes the impact is
emotionally, or having mental clarity, or sometimes physically I have
more energy. And generally I feel more alive. Things are better
interacting with people; I'm more relaxed; I make better choices and
I feel more grounded and present."

What can we eat on a fast hectic schedule that will not compromise
our health?
Fruits and vegetables on the go. All it takes is a little preparation
time and some containers for whatever you like, raw organic carrots
or raw organic broccoli. Be sure to eat slowly, and chew the whole
foods well. You do not want anything mixed or stirred.
I did a drive from Toronto to Ottawa and back with only an organic
apple or another fruit every 45 minutes or so. This is far more
economical than stopping at the chains and it is well worth it. My
energy level was constant, smooth and alert.
The chains empty your wallet fast and still leave you hungry and then
you are feeling sleepy. And you get unhealthy fast. Your hunger can
be "treated" only with real foods.

One magical evening fifteen years ago my mind exploded. I was studying the Natural Hygiene Course and understood how to save and resurrect my life. And I understood what humanity needed to undo disease, suffering and its descent toward extinction.
My revelation of health via the principles of natural raw food diet and self healing set in motion my rapid healing and lit a fire in me which is still raging on. From an abyss on the brink of destruction to the pinnacle of health, here I am! Some people describe my passion for getting people the messages of raw food eating and self healing as driven and indomitable. A minute has rarely gone by in fifteen years when I have not been caught up in thinking of ways
to effectively present this information so that everyone can understand and embrace it.
Where is this passion coming from? From eight years of hellacious suffering and a will to live in a healthy body and enjoy the fruits of life, and to see my fellow Earth beings realize the same. Anyone who knows me knows that I’ll be educating the world for the next hundred years, or as long as it takes for humanity to wake up to healthful living.
I love doing this work--empowering people with this knowledge and seeing them overcoming suffering, thwarting death, and becoming healthy and liberated from the medical traps is heartening and exhilarating! Every woman, man and child deserves to live a healthful life in a healthy body!
The information describing how to heal, rejuvenate and regenerate is here and available to everyone now and it is high time that everyone gets it!
As Thomas Henry Huxley said,
“Education is the instruction of the intellect in the laws of Nature.” Natural is the way to be!
Humanity needs to know that:
We are biological (not technological or medical) creatures; natural is the way. Our biological/physiological dietetic constitution is frugivore.
Alive raw fruits, succulent plants, seeds and nuts are the foods which constitute our natural, most delicious and most healthful diet; “live foods for live people” is the watchword.
Cooking food is an act of destruction, creating toxins; cooked meat and grains are carcinogenic. Every nutrient we need is available in fruit and plant foods; there is no need to kill and eat dead animals.
A meal of an apple is immeasurably nutritionally superior to any cooked food meal. Simple eating is not boring--it is deliciously liberating and reverses aging!
Our bodies know how to self heal disease--we merely have to step out of the way,
live on simple raw juices, and/or fruits and vegetables, or on water, get rest and sleep and the body will detoxify and heal.
Germs do not cause illness--they are all beneficial, working symbiotically with the body to help digest plant foods, synthesize some vitamins and clean up wastes.
We cannot become healthy if we attempt to drug and continue to pollute our bodies with medicines and dead deranged “foods.” Every drug or medicine is poison and has no healing power.
There are no quick fixes or short cuts to health--only the body itself can regenerate a healthier body, and it needs a clean diet and supportive conditions to do that.
Relying on outside modalities for healing disempowers us; relying on Providence for self healing is the way to actualize perfect health and maximum longevity.
There are no mysteries behind why we get sick--the information describing the cause of and way to overcome every
illness, and the proper professional help, is here and available to everyone.
Disease is not inevitable or out of our control--we only become diseased if we poison and enervate our bodies and minds.
No one need fear “getting sick”. “Getting sick” is nature’s way of detoxifying and telling us that we need to correct our thinking and live more healthfully.
Perfect health and joyous living are our birthright, and we can all move toward their realization every day, on the glorious healthful living path.
I thank you for reading this and for anything you can do to spread the message of healthful living. There is a universal spiritual law which says that to receive we must give. It follows that for every ounce of good will we put out toward our fellow Earth citizens, we will receive more enrichment in return.
This is so true! It feels so good to give--to oneself by creating a healthier body, and
to humanity by sharing this information. This raises our and Mother Earth’s level of health and deepens our spiritual connection, becoming a joyous daily ritual or celebration.
The fruits of this healing work are simply the fruits of life. I’d love to share with you and wish you beautiful health and endless abundance!
I have become aware of many things on my "Raw Path".. This article is here to share with you some of the non-food related changes I have made in my lifestyle that complement my diet related path to optimize my health, energy and well-being.
When I first went raw, I used all the "standard" products- i.e.: toiletries (aquafresh toothpaste, paul mitchell shampoo, ivory soap, edge shaving gel, etc.). I had no idea how bad these products were for my health!
When becoming raw, and started to detox my body, I found that many of these products contain some "nasty" ingredients, that I believe were not good for my system.. After all I was suppose to be "de-toxifying".. and without other
lifestyle changes, I would "re-toxify" myself.... So why would I want to put all these toxins back into my body? Some of the primary ingredients that I am now weary of: anything with alcohol, sodium laurel sulfate, or any other "big words" I can't pronounce or don't know what they are... I mean-- what is raw foods about anyway? Its about getting back to nature, and eating simply- whole, uncooked and minimally processed foods.
I believe that in life, we should reduce toxins in our environment such as we do with our diet. (Minimally processed, and natural as possible products.)
Skin is the largest organ of our body. Is it permeable? Many think, no.. But think again. Yes, its very permeable, and things we put on our skin, get absorbed into our body. It also works the other way. The skin also excretes toxins, if its not clogged up... To cleanse the skin, I recommend dry skin brushing with a skin brush.
(Available in many health food stores)
Here are some of the areas that I have changed:
SHOWERING: Chlorine found in many "city" water systems is REALLY TOXIC STUFF. Do you drink purified water? I sure hope so.. Why put chorinated water on your skin or breathe it? That's what you are doing every time you take a shower. Here is a quote:
"Not only is chlorine absorbed through the skin, but also vaporizes in the shower, inhaled into the lungs and transferred directly into the blood system. In fact, chlorine exposure form one shower is equal to an entire day's amount of drinking the same water. Therefore, drinking filtered or bottled water addresses only half the problem"
At my residence, I have installed a shower filter, and when I travel, I take a shower filter with me to install at the hotel. I have noticed softer skin and more vibrant hair after installing the filter. An affordable shower filter
with replaceable element can be found here.
SOAP: Now days, I use little natural soap (such as dr. bronners, or hand made soap (with few ingredients) from a farmers market). I use no deodorant, since its just not needed. Many days I take a shower with only water.. Do animals take showers or baths with soap? Do they use shampoo?
SHAVING: I couldn't believe a good friend who has been raw for a number of years still using a "natural" shaving cream.. I had him list the ingredients, and one of them was the same ingredient that is in antifreeze for cars! I said, what are you doing? Do you want to shave with antifreeze? Now days I use a little soap with some jojoba oil ( a little goes a long way). I get really close shaves with the oil and soap)
DRYING HAIR: I never use a blow dryer. They are one of the highest sources of EMF (Electromagnetic Fields).. I just towel dry and air dry my hair.
DEODORANT: I
don't use any. Once your body gets "clean", you shouldn't need any. If you really must use some, I have seem some "crystal" products that may be better that other products.
TOOTHPASTE: I don't use anything with fluoride in it. I don't use anything with Sodium Laurel Sulfate. I use natural toothpaste's or tooth powders with all natural ingredients.
PERFUMES/COLOGNES: Many just nauseate me.. I had a college instructor who was allergic to all scents, she said that most are made with formaldehyde. Now days I use only essential oils for perfume/cologne.
AIR FRESHENER: I use essential oils (aromatherapy) for freshing the air, or if its really bad, I get out the Air Wise - air purifier
WORKING ON MY CAR: When working on my car (such as changing the oil, etc.), I ALWAYS wear gloves to minimize contact with oil, grease, etc.
TOILET PAPER Many toilet paper and paper towels are made from "virgin"
(non-recycled paper). I have switched to using recycled toilet paper that is not "bleached with chlorine" (which releases toxic dioxins into the environment). Read more about it here.
PAPER TOWELS: I'm working towards reducing all paper towel use. I strive to use sponges and cloth towels whenever needed when cleaning.
TISSUE PAPER/NAPKINS: Before I was raw, I can remember getting runny noses, blowing my nose, etc., now days, this rarely ever occurs, so I no longer purchase tissue paper. I do not purchase napkins either, and use cloth napkins or a cloth towel when needed.
CLEANING PRODUCTS: "Standard" cleaning products in "supermarkets" are toxic. I recommend cleaning products that are from yesteryear, like grandma use to use- i.e.: lemon juice, vinegar, etc.. Or try some less toxic cleaners available in health food stores..
TECHNOLOGY I have even gone so far to cut out some "technology" out of my
life, which may pose health risks.
I believe one of the biggest health risks in todays world is CELL PHONES. When I use a cell phone, or if one is in CLOSE PROXIMITY to me, and being used, I will get a headache. I believe that I am really sensitive to the energy fields that the cell phone produces.. Therefore I believe they are not good to use... and toxic... It surprised me when at a recent raw food dinner in Santa Monica, California how many people had cell phones at the event! I do however have a pager in case there is some sort of emergency. Since pagers do not have to TRANSMIT, they do not give me the same headache. Lately, I heard on the news that several cell phone manufacturers were being sued by people "claiming" that they cause cancer.. Hmmm. maybe my head is trying to tell me something?? Just listen to your body, and all will be revealed.
While I believe the computer is a "great tool", I believe in
minimizing any risk factors that may arise due to its use.
COMPUTER MONITORS (glass picture tubes) or CRT may be another health hazard from research I have done. Since most of my day is spent behind a CRT, I decided to purchase a "FLAT SCREEN LCD" monitor, which doesn't pose the same risk as a CRT screen. I have noticed I feel more "calm" after switching to the LCD panel. While the text on the screen is comparable, for fast action graphics (such as games or watching movies, or even viewing pictures- the quality is just not the same). The prices recently for the LCD screens have been coming down lately. A 15" can be had for about $500, and a 18" for about $1000.
To check for EMF (Electro Magentic Field) Exposure, I purchased a "cell sensor" which is a meter to measure EMF. Its amazing to walk around the house and see how much EMF is around, and how much it dissipates with distance.
In order to mitigate the
effects from EMF on my person, and increase my personal energy or "chi", I purchased a Q-Link Pendant. Before and after purchasing the Qlink, I had kirilian photography done, which showed the energy increase after using the qlink. Read more about the Q-Link here. If your interested in purchasing a "Qlink Classic Pendant", email me. I may have some still available at 20% off the retail price.
To mitigate the effects of EMF throughout my house, I purchased 3 tachyon discs. According to the Tachyon Web site: "Electromagnetic fields lose their negative effects when they become coherent through the unified field of Tachyon.". I figured that the discs "couldn't hurt", and after I received a recommendation from a friend, I went ahead and purchased them.. Learn more about Tachyon here
RECYCLING: I also strive to recycle more, and help save mother earth. You can help by using a cloth bag, backpack or bring a cardboard
box when shopping, Minimally reuse your paper bags to carry your food away from the supermarket.. (many markets will even give you a "bag credit" for doing this). Be sure to compost all your fruit and veggie items! (I purchased a worm composting bin).
Hopefully you will (or already have) implemented some of the above less toxic solutions to "optimize" your health as I have mine.
