Greetings!
It's been very busy around Tanglewood since my last letter, and I've
allowed several months to pass.
What's kept us so busy? Well, finally, after years of thinking and
talking about it, we've made the move to the tropics. We have a
beautiful site in the mountains about 60 miles west of Panama City,
Panama.
Though Panama can be pretty hot, our roughly 2000 feet of elevation
here means that temperatures tend to range between about 75 and 85 F
most of the time. Every once in a while, I'll put on a pair of pants,
or a long-sleeve shirt, but those times are pretty rare.
It's the rainy season now, and that means that most days get some
rain, though usually not more than an hour or two, with plenty of sun
almost every day, and warm temperatures regardless of the
precipitation.
Perhaps because it rarely rains more than an hour or two per day, the
rains are never unwelcome, and certainly provide an abundance of
water for the many food-bearing plants here.
We have coconut palms, 5 kinds of bananas, papayas, avocado, mango,
guava, guanabana, orange, mandarin, lime, and other fruit trees on
site now, and are putting in a garden where we'll grow tomatoes,
peppers, lettuce, spinach, cucumbers, watermelon, cantaloupe, and
perhaps a few other things as well. We also have many pineapple
plants growing, and are sprouting the seeds from all of the fruit
that we eat; this means we'll also be growing sapote, mamey,
mangosteen, and any other delicious fruits we can find here.
And though it may be a while before some of these plants bear fruit,
we're enjoying the highest quality fruit you can imagine, most of
which comes from within a few miles of our site. Every other day or
so, we buy produce from our neighbors, getting tree-ripened fruit
(that hasn't been sprayed).
Panama enjoys an unbelievable biological diversity. As an example,
there are roughly three times more bird species in this tiny country
(roughly the size of South Carolina) than in all of North America.
And if you keep your eyes open here, you may see some of the many
species in the area, including the parrots that provide a regular
early morning serenade, as well as spectacular hummingbirds and
numerous other species.
We also have some lovely trees on site, including one spectacular
granddaddy over which the sun rises every day. And just beyond the
tree, roughly 10 miles away, you can see the sparkling Pacific Ocean.
It truly is paradise here. . . .
