Dear Dianne:
Just to further explicate: although the dental profession does not explain
this to its patients, it has long been known that mercury is a highly
corrosive substance, which you can confirm by consulting any standard chemical
reference text, such as the Merck Index. Nowadays, it is acknowledged by
dentists that the mercury fillings are not going to last for a lifetime - they
are only good for about twenty years before they will have to be replaced. The
reason for this is that the mercury will gradually wear down what is left of
the tooth, and leak out. What they do not tell the public is that this
substance is highly toxic and has been related to a number of chronic
conditions. For further information on the problems associated with mercury
fillings, consult several popular books, such as Hal Huggins' "It's All in
Your Head," Guy Fasciana's "Are Your Dental Fillings Poisoning You?" and the
work of Sam Ziff(author of at least two books on this subject). Most dentists
today offer alternatives to mercury fillings, so if you need to have fillings,
you should inquire about your options.
Sincerely,
Mark Ansara
