It has been slow ... but it could be the time of year. A few of the
"older" members are in hibernation ( LOL ). Maybe once the holidays
are past things will come back to life.

Warning - if you even remotely think that you may be diabetic, the worst thing
that you can do to yourself is to start pumping yourself full of sugar - whether
it be fruit juice or soda or sugar pills.

The dizziness has nothing to do with BG - it has to do with your body adjusting
to the poisons leaving your body and your getting more oxygen. It does not last
long and will pass just like all of the other wonderful things that we go
through as we quit.

If you think that you have diabetes - go to your doctor and be tested before you
try to self-treat it. If you think that you are hypoglycemic - do not self
treat - go to the doctor and be tested and treated properly.

Hi Big A and Shini, I did send quite a long reply to this message
but can't find it in the list....maybe the message was too long.

Of course you and Shini and anyone else can join my husband and I in
quitting on saturday Nov 17, thats the day we plan to have our last
ciggies, so I guess that means the 18th will be the first day with
none.

Re the sugars in ciggies, never knew that, will have to find out
more about it. I've never taken sugar pills, but I'm guessing that
lots of fresh fruit with natural sugars would be a healthier
alternative to sugar pills, unless of course your doctor says to
carry on with the sugar pills as well as fresh fruit etc.

Well...I have to go find lots of things to do, trying to keep busy
and spacing out the ciggies as much as I can...in preparation for
quitting.

I'll look out for your posts to see how you are doing, don't give up
hope, it can be done and we must keep telling ourselves that.
  kind regards,

amanda

Just so that you know.. Most people who try the method you guys are doing
are not successful... It is an either you are quit or not.. You actually put
your system through withdrawal everytime you have a smoke..

It takes 72 hours.. Or 3 days for your body to rid itself fully of nicotine.
On that third day, your body craves it hard as the last ditch effort to get
you to smoke.. Think of it as a nicodemon on your shoulder... One that you
can tell where to go and that you do not want to smoke anymore and that you
are not listening to any of his petty excuses of why he wants you to smoke..

What is worse about quitting smoking and quitting drugs is that you can go
into a rehab center to get you through detox if you are quitting drugs.. You
cannot do that while quitting smoking.. And I think that the whole first
month is detox period as you are not only ridding your body of nicotine,
but all the other drugs that are in those cigarettes...

Please do not lie to yourself to think you can have just one more puff...
When you quit.. It is NOT ONE PUFF EVER again... You are an addict and
addicts cannot do one iota of whatever they are addicted to...

Ok I know this is a speech, but your husband is ready to quit smoking, he
just has to put his foot down when the going gets tough.. There are days I
spent crying all day long.. You will both go through those days.. It is
normal.. The only difference is.. Some people end up lighting up and others
don't... You have to make yourself not to.. Yes it is easier said than done.
. But it can be done...

From what you have said.. It sounds as the curse of the three's got ya...
Yes a curse to smokers... Well most .. Maybe not all. There is an exception
to everything ya know..

But it hits 3 days.. 3 weeks.. And 3 months... Usually those who fail at
quitting will fail on those milestones.. It is like somehting kicks in or
whatever and it seems like life is impossible... But all you have to do is
get through that day... And then it is over... I get cravings now an then,
but I have learned to go past them and move on with life.. Since the
nicodemon has learned that I cannot be pressured anymore, he does not visit
me much anymore... And I am loving it..

Six months, three days, 30 minutes and 21 seconds. 5610 cigarettes not
smoked, saving $1,445.06. Life saved: 2 weeks, 5 days, 11 hours, 30 minutes.

Hi Trish.....I'm sorry too that we went back to
smoking, but we decided that when we quit a few days
ago that we did not do it right, we were not prepared
for all the side effects. Thats why we started again
but we've made a plan of how to cut down over the
week, and also of how we will deal with various
situations that will crop up....in my husbands case he
has planned how he will cope with any stress at work,
and also how to cope with weekends when he is not
working and is home and has more free time...thats
when he usually gets a bit bored and will crave
ciggies. In my case I just have to keep busy as much
as I can, at least for the first few weeks. I've just
started a home study Legal Secretary course, which is
going to take up quite a bit of time, so hopefully it
will help keep my mind off ciggies after we quit.

I'll mention chantix to my husband and we'll both ask
the doctor about it. Not sure if they sell it in the
UK but if they do we'll be happy to try it.

We've also both agreed that when he is feeling cranky
after quitting day that he is to tell me, and I'll do
the same.

My mum is 67 years old and smoked heavily since she
was 18 yrs old, but 2 years ago she just woke up one
morning and said to herself "I want to live"...and she
quit smoking, right there, just like that, and has
never smoked since. She feels so much better now,
looks healthier and has saved lots of money that would
have been wasted on ciggies. I've seen the physical
damage that smoking has caused her over the years, and
it really is scary....but since quitting there is a
drastic difference.

Well done to you for quitting and for staying quit so
long, I can imagine how wonderful that must feel, and
can't wait to feel that way.

Best wishes, amanda

Dawn, It certainly is difficult, we've tried lots of
times, never lasted more than a day until recently when
we stopped a few days ago, but then started back
yesterday.

The last few days without ciggies was great because I
was not coughing at all. But since yesterday I've been
coughing a lot, its very annoying....but it proved to
me that just a few days with no ciggies does make a
difference, I never believed that until I noticed it
myself.

Good luck with your quit too, and good luck to
everyone else who is getting ready to quit, stay
positive and focused and keep thinking of how great
you'll feel...thats what I will keep telling myself
over the next few days...it helps...
Treat yourself to something nice with the money you
save after your first week.

Hi Big A.....Thats the first time I heard ciggies had sugar in them,
will have to read up on that to find out more. I won't be surprised
if it does have sugar, it has almost everything else in there.

It might also be an idea when you quit next to try having lots of
fruit, as an alternative to sugar pills and see if that helps get
rid of any dizziness. Lots of natural sugars in fruit etc....

Of course you are welcome to quit with my husband and I on the
17th....(you too Shini if you are reading this).

My husband and I had quit a few days ago but it did not quite work
out and unfortunately we started smoking again yesterday. I still
feel guilty. However, we are determined to quit on Nov 17th, in the
meantime what we are doing over the week is really spacing out the
ciggies. I can easily smoke 3 ciggies in the space of an hour....but
now I'm trying to only have one every hour or hour and a half. Then
tomorrow I'll extend the time to 2 hours....hopefully by friday
there should be a 3 or 4 hour gap, or longer. Its difficult but I
find that if I keep busy and find things to do it keeps my mind busy
and the time goes quickly. Today I'll be clearing out all junk and
old clothes, old books etc...should help pass a few hours.

We've tried so many times to quit, but this time it feels different.
I'm just fed up of the constant cough, and everything else that
comes with smoking. I'd love to get healthy, eat lots of fruit and
veg and actually know its doing me good and not just being depleted
by ciggies....also the thought of getting cancer due to smoking
scares the daylights out of me....so, this Saturday Nov 17th is the
day my husband and I are quitting....and if thats the day you'd like
to quit too then you are welcome to join us. We have not set any
particular time to quit on saturday, we just decided that we will
have our last ciggies on saturday night....and once we wake up
Sunday morning Nov 18th then no more.

Stay positive, and please keep posting to let us know how you are
doing, I'll be posting on here too over the week, it helps to have a
group like this as many of us are in the same situation and those
who have already quit are there to give advice and support.

Best Wishes, Amanda

Trish!

Congratulations on 6 months smoke free! I am so proud of you! I remember early
in your quit - how hard it was for you! But you are doing it!

Keep fighting the good fight!

I know that you have had many responses..... But

I did the same thing.. It is all part of quitting smoking and do not take it
personally at all... There were days I was ready to divorce my husband had
he come home from work and handled my quitting smoking differently than he
did.... It was not him.. It was me not being able to deal with the emotions.
. Just remember it will not last.. It may seem like it is forever, but for
the first few months dealing with quitting smoking for some is like bringing
out some demon from the bottomless pitt of He**... I ended up being one of
them... It does go away.. It just takes time and no smoking...

Good luck

Hello everyone. My husband and I quit smoking a few days ago, but

since quitting my husband is very cranky and moody and is hardly

talking to me. He used to be very loving, now he won't even touch

me...all in the space of a few days. I don't know what to do....I'm

sure it is because we quit smoking and he is having trouble handling

it. Which is odd because he used to smoke much less than me, I used to

have 30-40 ciggies a day over the past 12 years, he used to just smoke

about 10 or 12 ciggies a day over the last 10 years.. but 4 days ago

we just quit cold turkey, and to be honest, I am missing it a bit but

its not bothering me too much, but what is bothering me is the way my

husband is behaving, I am worried that it could affect our marriage.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Kira....are there any particular fruit juices that are

Hey All,
I found that apparently when we smoke, the nicotine causes the body to release
glucose into the bloodstream. I also found that smoking increases the risk of
type 2 diabetes. The actual cigarettes do not contain the sugar, but the
nicotine causes an alteration in the blood sugar level. So, drinking fruit
juices while quitting smoking is a good plan.

Well...I have to go find lots of things to do, trying to keep busy
and spacing out the ciggies as much as I can...in preparation for
   quitting.

I'll look out for your posts to see how you are doing, don't give up
hope, it can be done and we must keep telling ourselves that.
   kind regards,

   amanda

I did not know ciggies had sugar in them.. I was told that when you quit
smoking that your blood sugar levels need to be checked on especially if you
have problems with sugar levels.. Smoking affects what your body does with
the sugar in your system...

Can you please provide links to this suggesting that cigarettes up blood
sugar?
I'm diabetic, but I was not diagnosed until over a year after I quit and I
know that the two are not related. The dizziness is from the fog that we
get early in a quit from our brain suddenly getting more oxygen as we deny
our body oxygen when we suck in those over 4000 poisons.

Hi Pete! Thanks so much for your advice. And thank you to all those
who have sent replies to my message.

My husband and I had a very long talk, and it turns out that the
reason he was so grouchy and grumpy and short tempered with me is
because we had quit cold turkey a few days ago and he was not ready
for it. Anyway, we have been very very naughty and have started
smoking again, BUT, the plan is to cut down over the week, so that
we are more prepared, and we have set Saturday Nov 17th as our final
quit date.....we have also discussed his grouchiness, and he has
promised that if he feels like he is getting cranky that he will
tell me and then he will go watch tv, or play on the playstation or
even go for a walk. I in turn have promised that if on quitting day
I feel uptight and anxious that I will find things to do,,,read, go
on ebay, etc....but he has made it clear to me that if he does vent
any frustration on me that it is not me, its just the withdrawal
symtoms, like you said, so I said I will understand.

I feel very very very bad about going back to the ciggies, not had
any in a few days, and to be totally honest, that first ciggie made
me feel ill....but we are determined to make it work this time.

If all goes well, I'll be posting a message on here on Nov
18th....after quitting on Nov 17th, and this time I plan to stay

I have to agree with you on the stink.. OMG.. My husanbands cousin in here
for a couple of days and he smokes... OUTSIDE of course, but now the air
outside my door stinks ... When he comes in and puts his coat with the rest
of ours... Welll they all stink... Then I made the mistake of washing his
coat with ours... OMG>. Thank god for odobegone.. I have sprayed tons of it
and ended up using it to wash the coats a second time...

When he comes back in for a smoke I am actually physically ill now when I
get a wiff of that horrible smell of cigarettes.. How did I smoke for all
those years..a rgh.. Yuck.. Gross..

Sorry.. That was my rant for the day.. Oh yeah.. Since he has been here my
allergies are now acting up0.... It is like as if I am allergic to cigarette
smoke now... Waaaa..

I am loving that fact that I quit smoking...

It has been 3 months since I had my last cigarette. My last one was on
the way into see the lazer therapist. I still dont know wether it was
the $400 bones it cost to have the lazer treatment or if the treatment
worked that well. Well, I guess I'll never really know. The only
important thing is that I have not lit up again and now feel they
stink like hell. I dont share too often but I felt this was a special
milestone....Thanks for listening, Scott

Well...I have to go find lots of things to do, trying to keep busy
and spacing out the ciggies as much as I can...in preparation for
quitting.

I'll look out for your posts to see how you are doing, don't give up
hope, it can be done and we must keep telling ourselves that.
  kind regards,

amanda

Hi everyone... well I smoked and quite frankly it almost made me sick.
I feel so terrible about this.
I got very upset, and did what I used to do in moments like those. I
lit up.
I have thrown the cigs away, and restarted the meter.
The patch is firmly in place and so is my resolve. I know if I can make
it through hell week I can sucessfully become an ex-smoker.

I have been quit for 11 minutes and 46 seconds (0 days). I have saved
$0.04 by not smoking 0 cigarettes. I have saved 0 minutes of my life.
My Quit Date: 11/13/2007 1:30 AM

Please pray for me.

stink like hell. I dont share too often but I felt this was a special
milestone....Thanks for listening, Scott

18th....after quitting on Nov 17th, and this time I plan to stay
quit.

Thank you to everyone, you have all been very helpful and I look
forward to messaging you again after my quitting day Nov 17th...

Best wishes, amanda

Congrats on 3 months smokefree Scott!

Keep fighting the good fight - keep your guard up - it will continue to get
easier - but don't let one blind-side you :)

You can do it!

It has been 3 months since I had my last cigarette. My last one was on
the way into see the lazer therapist. I still dont know wether it was
the $400 bones it cost to have the lazer treatment or if the treatment
worked that well. Well, I guess I'll never really know. The only
important thing is that I have not lit up again and now feel they
stink like hell. I dont share too often but I felt this was a special
   milestone....Thanks for listening, Scott
