A freshly pressed vegetable juice that is meant to stimulate the
elimination of toxins from your body should have the following
properties:
1. The ability to encourage movement of waste products through your
intestines.
2. The ability to encourage your digestive organs to release
digestive juices that can help to optimally break down recently
ingested food.
3. The ability to draw toxins out of your tissues.
With these properties in mind, here is one of the most effective
detox juice recipes that I know of:
Artichoke, Cilantro, and Radish Detox Juice Recipe
Ingredients:
4 Jerusalem artichokes
2 handfuls of fresh cilantro
4 radishes
3 carrots
1 tablespoon of green food powder that contains chlorella
Directions:
Use a juicer to press all ingredients except green food powder into
a vegetable juice.
Combine juice and green food powder in a bottle with a secure lid
and shake well for 10 or more seconds. Enjoy within an hour of
making this effective detox juice.
Notes:
Jerusalem artichokes are rich in the soluble fiber inulin, which is
known to encourage healthy bowel function.
Cilantro and chlorella are regularly recommended by many health
practitioners, myself included, for purposes of detoxification.
Radishes are known to stimulate the release of bile from the gall
bladder. Bile is needed for optimal digestion of fat.
Hi! I've been doing a morning meditation for a long while now, but have just
recently started
doing an 8-minute Qigong morning routine, as well. I was wondering: Is it better
to perform
the Qigong routine first and then sit and meditate silently for 20 minutes, or
is it better to
meditate for 20 minutes and then do the routine?
I thought doing the routine first would make my meditation more centered, but it
seems to
be making it more restless. Thoughts?
Adapted from A Handmade Life, by Wm. S. Coperthwaite (Chelsea Green, 2002).
In our society there is great confusion about the concept of freedom. What is it? And when does it become something else?
SIMPLE SOLUTION: Just for example, many people think "Isn't it okay to spray my lawn with toxic chemicals? After all, it's my lawn. And it`s a free country."
Find out what this amazing teacher and philosopher has to say about the true nature of freedom. There are some very quotable quotes here to pass along to your friends.
Freedom without responsibility is license. We have people feeling they can do what they like with "their" land, not realizing that their actions may injure someone else in another place and time. Cutting trees to clear mountain land may cause flooding for a neighbor downstream and cause "my" soil to be washed away, destroying the birthright of another generation.
We should be free to nurture and to care for but not to destroy.
I have recently written a book which is a translation of an important lecture given by Dr Pang Ming, founder of Zhineng Qigong. The feedback from the previews that I have received so far has been very good. I invite teachers of qigong and those who are interested in this alternative health modality to a free preview of the book prior to its official launch in May 2007 with the hope that they might like it and perhaps recommend it to colleagues and students. Otherwise, please treat it as a gift from a fellow student of energy healing science.
Using Yishi - Developing Human Potential through Qigong
A lecture by Dr Pang Ming Translated by Samuel Lau
"Great book! Inspiring as well as enlightening. Once you start reading this book it is difficult to put it down. Each chapter takes the reader on an enlightening journey of self-discovery, explaining complex theoretical concepts with day-to-day examples that help the reader to understand the lesson being taught. This is a must have book for anyone seriously seeking to understand the connections and interactions between the physical and meta-physical world. `Using Yishi - Developing Human Potential through Qigong', demonstrates the great depth of the practice of Qigong, which is very badly understood particularly in western countries, where Qigong is mostly seen as a form of physical exercise. This book has many levels of depth to it and manages to teach its concepts to any level of understanding the student brings with them. People from any walk of life will find information they can directly apply to themselves and their lives. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in learning about and understanding their own potential." -Danny Siegenthaler, Dr of TCM, www.wildcrafted.com.au
"Being a new student, I'm at times overwhelmed and frustrated with the desire to learn as much as I can about the technical and subjective aspects of Zhineng Qigong. In this regard, `Using Yishi' is just what the doctor (Dr. Ming Pang) ordered to help the new student correctly understand the nuance and philosophy of the techniques. I'm sure in time, with further practice and study of this text, deeper layers of understanding will emerge. So, with my intellect otherwise satisfied for the moment, practice is enhanced and that's `a good thing'. Truly, the proof of the pudding is in the practice and `Using Yishi' is an excellent cookbook to assist the process. Thanks to Samuel and all!" - Charlie Gerth, San Antonio, Texas, USA
"I must thank Samuel Lau for the massive task he undertook in translating Pang Laoshi's teachings. This work is a precious addition to the limited literature on the subject in the West and explains the very essence of Zhineng Qigong. `Using Yishi' reveals the reasons behind some of life's phenomena, explained in a simple and practical way. After reading it the sensation during practice has been amplified and now I am experiencing a more profound meaning to life.
I recommend this book especially to serious practitioners of Qigong and to all those who have made Qigong part of their life."
- Kenneth Agius, ZQ teacher, Malta."
"I found 'Using Yishi' to be awesome! I've been fortunate to train with a number of great Qigong people and found the approach to writing to be very refreshing. As a matter of fact, I could not put it down after getting started. The direct, easy to read manner in which it was written, is to be applauded. The focus on empowering the practitioner, training simplicity and the demystification of a topic (that often gets overcomplicated) makes this work a true classic." - William Rowe, M.Ed, USA, QigongGuide.com

Our liver is the second largest organ in our body (our skin is the largest), and is involved in almost all physiological processes in the body. Probably the best known function of the liver is detoxification of harmful substances, such as alcohol, pesticides, household chemicals, etc. But the liver also has many other important roles such as fat absorption and metabolism, hormone metabolism, control of blood cholesterol, control of blood sugar, and storage and metabolism of vitamins.
Some of the things that burden the liver are: Alcohol, meat, eggs, pollution in our air and water, processed foods, refined sugar and many over-the-counter drugs. Over time, these toxins accumulate in our tissues and the liver becomes weaker and less able to perform its many important jobs. Then we may get one or more of the following symptoms:
- Headaches - Skin rashes - Fatigue - Constipation - Abdominal bloating - Intolerance to fatty foods - Intolerance to household products such as shampoos, disinfectants, and essential oils. - Weight gain - Hormonal problems
Fortunately, the liver has a remarkable ability to regenerate. If you give up some of the foods that are burdening your liver and contributing to unwellness, the liver will quickly start to clean and restore itself. You can help to cleanse your liver by following a one week diet of fruits, vegetables and brown rice and avoiding all sugary foods (e.g. refined flour, sugar, honey, etc.), as well as all high fat foods (e.g. all animal products, nuts, avocado, oil, etc.). (PLEASE NOTE: consuming fat in the diet is absolutely necessary for good health, so after the liver cleanse reintroduce healthy fats such as avocado, nuts, and cold-pressed olive oil).
Cleansing your liver can be uncomfortable at first, since for many toxins to leave the body, they need to be dumped back into the circulation. This can cause headaches, nausea, fatigue, mental fogginess, or skin eruptions. These are all good signs as they show the toxins are being released from the liver and other tissues in the body and are being prepared for elimination. (Drinking a Coke at this stage may cure the symptoms, but will put an abrupt halt to the liver's rejuvenation! So endure these discomforts.) It is vital to drink an abundance of water during any detoxication process. Healthy springwater can be purchased from your local supermarket.
Because toxins are circulating through the body, it is useful to have plenty of antioxidants which will protect your body and aid in the detoxification process. Fresh vegetable and fruit juices, lemon juice, dandelion root tea, turmeric, fenugreek, ajwan, and other herbs are great to include in your diet to aid the liver cleanse. Many people find it useful to start the diet on a Thursday so that days 3 and 4 fall on the weekend (and they can rest). It is important not to be under too much physical or mental stress while your body is regenerating itself.
Even if you don't do the complete liver cleanse, you will make your liver happy by making the switch to a vegetarian wholefood diet, and reducing your consumption of coffee, processed foods, and alcohol. By doing so, you WILL notice a dramatic change in your health, physically, mentally and spiritually.
Some essential books to read if doing a liver cleanse:

Liver-Boosting Foods
Dandelion Root Tea You are probably familiar with the humble dandelion plant - it's a weed that grows just about everywhere. But did you know that it was a powerful herbal medicine for the liver?
Dandelion root stimulates the flow of bile and is a tonic for the liver. It is most powerful when made as a decoction of the raw, dried root (boil 2 teaspoons of the root in one cup of water and simmer for 10-15 minutes).
There are also many roasted Dandelion Root Teas available which make a delicious alternative to coffee. What's more, they will actually help to heal the liver from the effects of long-term caffeine consumption!
Lemon juice Despite its acidic taste, lemon juice is a powerful alkalising food, rich in anti-oxidants which assist the body in detoxification. It stimulates digestion, tonifies the stomach and increases secretion of bile from the liver. Although not a laxative, drinking fresh lemon juice can help to overcome constipation. Lemon juice is also a fantastic source of Vitamin C. Squeeze half a lemon in a cup of hot water and drink it first thing in the morning for good digestion.
Turmeric In India, Turmeric is known as the `Raj' (King) of all herbs, and it's not hard to see why.
It has powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, stimulates digestion, increases the flow of bile from the gallbladder, lowers cholesterol and inhibits the growth of cancer cells. Regular use of turmeric in the diet increases resistance to infection and reduces the risk of cancer.
But for the sake of some little mouthful of flesh we deprive a soul of the sun and light, and of that proportion of life and time it had been born into the world to enjoy.
Spring is the perfect time to implement a cleansing regimen and give our radiance and energy a boost! Our yoga practice goes a long way towards keeping us pure, but when we need some extra assistance, nature can be a powerful ally. We all need to detox at times! No matter how clean our lifestyle and diet, we need to help counteract cellular damage from less then ideal eating habits, over-acidity, environmental toxins, and free radicals.
We recommend the following drink daily. It is not only a refreshing treat for a summer day, but it is also perfect to purify us and banish free radicals! The Pure Bliss Shake is based on a recipe from Pure Food & Living in NYC. We have modified the ingredients slightly to our own specifications. Please try to use only fresh organic produce. Enjoy!
1 Pink grapefruit 1 peeled cucumber 1 handful of fresh cilantro 1 cup pineapple 1 Tsp coconut butter or flax oil (optional) 1 lime (juice only) 2 Tbls agave 1 pinch of celtic sea salt cinnamon (to taste) vanilla extract
Options: (tocotreinals, hemp protein powder, green super foods, bee pollen, ).
We especially recommend adding some nutrient dense green foods (i.e., spirulina, etc.) you won't even taste them in this delicious mix! - get ready to feel your energy spike!
Put all in a blender. Enjoy!
We tend to crave pink grapefruit at this time of the year. The body seems naturally to want a good flush and the grapefruit and pineapple are gentle effective kidney flushers. Cilantro is the real powerhouse ingredient here: We normally think of herbs like cilantro as just flavorful additions to our meals but by modifying the quantity slightly this simple herb can become an amazingly effective healing tool. Through the research of Dr. Yoshiaki Omura, it has been revealed that cilantro has the ability to remove heavy metals from the body. Heavy metals compromise the nervous system and bodily tissues. This leaves us vulnerable to conditions such as Alzheimer's, depression, compromised immune system, cancer, and more. Heavy metals also create an environment for various infections to flourish. This method of using cilantro has been called the 'poor man's chelation therapy.'
We wish you all a healthy, vital, beautiful, and bountiful spring!
Yoga helps to keep weight off and improve overall performance of the body and mind. Stiff neck, back pains, wrist pains and poor circulation – these are just some of the occupational hazards of a sedentary job. Add to that wrong diet, shallow breathing, poor posture, stress, and a work station that doesn't help you one bit. No wonder you end up putting on weight and feeling miserable. So why not de-stress, re-energize, jumpstart yourself? Work the kinks out of your body and mind each and every day of your life.
Here are 10 simple ways to help you reduce fat and keep you fit.
Asanas - Postures
The regular practice of yogasanas helps to keep weight off and improve overall performance of the body and mind. The two best physical postures to keep off the fat are:
1. Surya Namaskar or the Sun Salutation - The amount of calories a person will burn by practicing this will vary depending on the person's weight and the intensity and duration of the yoga session. On an average a 130-pound person will burn approximately 240 calories for a light to moderate yoga session. A 130-pound person will also burn approximately 400 calories per hour participating in an intense yoga session.
2. Sarvangasana or The Shoulder-stand is called the Queen of all asanas as it benefits the whole body. It is particular for blood circulation and stimulating the thyroid gland by throwing it open. This asana increases fat metabolism thereby converting fat to muscle and energy. This is like killing two birds with a single stone. You will not only lose fat but also have a better muscle tone and vitality.
3. Paschimottanasana or head to knees pose is ideal for stretching the arms, hamstrings, shoulders, and spine. In the process it helps rid the body of excess fat.
4. Marichyasana or sage Marichi twist pose gives immense benefits to the abdominal organs and spine. It helps increase abdominal fire and reduce fat around the waist and thighs.
Pranayama – Breathing techniques
Pranayama, through its influence on the hypothalamus, helps the obese to re-establish the lost balance between food intake and expenditure of energy.
5. Bhastrika or Ballast Breathing increases the flow of air into the body to produce inner heat at the physical and subtle level. It activates and invigorates the liver, pancreas, spleen and abdominal muscles, thus toning the digestive system and improving digestion. If you are resorting to weight loss pills it is sure to give you some side effects. Bhastrika is probably one of the safest options for losing weight as it ensures no side effect.
6. Suryabhedana or Right Nostril Breathing helps with many aspects of health, particularly weight loss and stress reduction. It is not a quick fix, but can be an excellent long-term approach to losing excess weight – and keeping it off. Within its ability to create total well-being, lies its ability to reduce excess weight through boosting metabolism and burning calories.
Shatkarmas - Cleansing techniques
Cleansing techniques purify the entire system of toxins. People suffering from obesity and those of a flabby and phlegmatic constitution will find them especially beneficial. The two main yogic cleansers are:
7. Dhauti is a cleansing technique specifically meant to cleanse the stomach. It consists of drinking as much water as you can then tickling the base of the throat and throwing it all out, thereby ridding the body of all excess fat and toxins.
8. Shankha Prakshalana is another type of technique for cleansing the entire digestive system. Shankha means conchshell and Prakshalana means to wash. Just like washing a conch shell where you would pour water into the mouth and drain it out the opposite end of the shell, so also with the intestinal tract. It has the same benefits of Dhauti except that here the entire digestive tract is cleansed.
9. Yogahar - Yogic Diet
Most illnesses are in some way linked to wrong food habits. A slight modification in dietary habits can rehabilitate the entire system. The yogic diet is a vegetarian one, consisting of pure, simple, natural foods which are easily digested and promote health. Simple meals aid the digestion and assimilation of foods. The yogic diet will help you lose weight and remain healthy. However, any change in diet should be made gradually.
10. Dhyana - Meditation
Meditation is a powerful technique that can be used to coax the mind into doing what you want. Remember the saying, `Think thin and get thin'. Mind-body techniques offer a powerful set of strategies to lose weight easily, and for good. When you meditate, you concentrate on your breathing while dismissing any distracting thoughts. Fattening foods become less enticing, you begin to crave healthy foods and to desire to move around more, enabling you to reach the weight loss goals you've been yearning for so long.
Inna, thank you so very much for that post. It comes at a time when I am just dreading the upcoming college semester so much that I can hardly stand it. The technique in your post will surely help.
Here's an interesting and powerful self-hypnosis technique you can use for the most fabulous study or reading sessions you've ever had.
First, sit in your most comfortable chair with the book or material you want to learn in your lap. If you need a light to read with, make sure it's turned on before continuing with this technique.
Wiggle around until you're comfortable and relaxed. Take a long, slow, deep breath and hold it for a second. Exhale gently and visualize your muscles relaxing throughout your body as you slowly release the air.
Repeat this deep breathing until you feel totally relaxed and at peace.
Now, here's the fun part.
Visualize a stairway leading into a basement. It's a long stairway with 103 steps. Visualize yourself walking down each stair. You can mentally count off each step, if you want, though that's not necessary as long as you visually see yourself going down each step.
When you reach the bottom, you find a beautiful wooden door with elaborate carvings etched into it.
You pause at the door for a moment to admire the carvings.
Then you turn your attention to the doorknob, which is made of beautiful brass. It feels cool in your hand as you turn the knob.
You open the door and walk into a beautiful study, a room lined with books, books, and more books. This study is so lined with books, it's utterly sound-proof... a perfect place to read and think deeply.
You close the door. As you do so, a deep and peaceful silence falls over you, an atmosphere utterly conducive to reading and thinking.
In the center of the study, there's a reclining chair. You sit down in the chair, adjust it to your favorite comfortable position, and open an imaginary book that's resting on the mahogany table right next to the recliner.
Now, while still visualizing yourself in your deep basement study, open your eyes and start reading the real book you have in your lap.
When you finish with your work, close your book and close your eyes and repeat the deep breathing exercise.
Now, visualize yourself getting out of the recliner, opening the door, and slowly walking back up the stairs.
Once at the top of the stairs, open your eyes once again, stretch as you take a few deep breaths, and then resume your normal waking consciousness.
Done properly, this technique results in a depth of concentration and degree of retention that you'll find hard to believe, at first.
Keep in mind, too, that you can use variations of this technique for writing and memorizing, as well as reading.

your are connecting, Margaret!
your feeling of the sublime, supernatural, ethereal,
celestial, humility of peacefulness ... aye.
the consumer/science world teachings are, of course,
that these feelings must be mixed with, subservient to,
the feelings of subordination, obediance ... and fear.

Don't be in a daze these holidays. Be aware and be fair to your body. Most of us can get away with some treats or indiscretions to our usual eating habits. However, if we vary too much and go to extremes, we may suffer the consequences and get sick. Get to know yourself and find a balance.
This is a good time to deepen and clarify our love and family connections. Emotional nurturance offers a satisfaction that may allow less emotional eating and avoid the excesses of the holidays. Be a supportive friend, and ask for support if you need it. Take care of one another. Give it a try and your spirit will be calmed and can also fly free of the burdens of time.
Stay open to your creativity. Do new things to improve your health, such as a treatment like massage or trying some new, healthy foods. The first weeks of November are good to look at some clean-up time. Soon there will be many tempting sweets, baked goods, and alcohol beverages.
Maintain your cornerstones of health. These include a good diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and minimal stress, including being able to relate well to family, friends, and co-workers.
Find the basic supportive foods for your diet that provides the energy and nutrients your body needs to stay healthy. In the colder months, it is important to focus on heat generating foods, such as cooked grains and legumes, hard squashes, some nuts and seeds, and protein foods. Also, include some garlic, onion, and ginger, plus the energizing spicy peppers such as cayenne and chili. This will keep your blood and energy moving. Know what works for you. I have found that my five keys to Staying Healthy are:
Do not eat too much too late in the day.
Drink plenty of clean water.
Exercise regularly.
Chew my food very well, eating more slowly.
Focus my diet around vegetables. What are the keys to maintaining your health?
Exercise activity is crucial now as in any season. As the weather cools, stretching is even more important, as is having indoor exercises we can do. Yoga and other flexibility-enhancing movements are helpful at keeping us youthful. "We are as young as our spine is flexible." Working with weights and doing aerobic exercise are vital to staying fit and strong to support immune function and circulation. A vital body rarely gets sick. Also, meditate and explore your inner world and dreams in your restful recharging sleep.
Nutritional supplements can be used to support our health as well. Immune supportive nutrients can help us prevent common illnesses. Taking some Echinacea now is helpful, as is the Chinese herb, astragalus. Maintaining daily vitamins C and E along with selenium and zinc is also immune protective and helps clear our body of certain toxins. Some people are helped by other herbs or animal gland extracts, such as thymus, spleen, and liver.!
Enjoy safe travels by preparing well and being aware and cautious. Plan your trips. Avoid dehydration and eat well; this may involve bringing water and appropriate food/snacks with you on the plane or in your car. Take a few key supplements with you to ward off all the germ exposures. This includes garlic, vitamin C, and others. Also, review my Summer 2002 Health Tips or my book, The Staying Healthy Shopper's Guide, for more ideas. Factors that can weaken immunity include stressful emotions, nutritional deficiencies, excess sugar and alcohol, and overwork. Some Immune Supporters include good sleep, a healthy diet, regular exercise, and feelings of love and appreciation.
Prepare for the cold season. Gather your fuel and food, breathe, and exercise as you should. In Chinese medicine, the fall season focuses on the lungs and large intestine. Overdoing it can lead to congestion and toxicity, as well as constipation and the clogging of the nose and sinuses. This leads then to upper respiratory infections as the germs grow in the mucus and then inflame the membranes. Staying clean and clear this season along with a healthy immune system will help keep you well. Try a facial steam and breathe in the herbal mist (you can use mints, rosemary, chamomile, lemon verbena, and other herbs) to help clear the sinuses.
Take a rest now because the demanding holiday season is just around the corner. Don't burn your batteries out before December. Kindle your inner flame and firepower, which is protective from the invasion of harsh climates and germs. The Winter blues comes partly from a loss of this fire energy. Shifting and balancing with the Seasons is vital to Staying Healthy.
Extra Notes on Colds & Flus
Should you get any colds or flus, it's best to jump on those immediately. I start with hourly vitamin C of about 1000 mg, increased doses of vitamin A (not beta-carotene) 25,000-30,000 IUs 3 times daily for just 3-4 days and then lower that dosage to 10-20,000 IUs twice daily for about a week (then take a break since excess vitamin A can be toxic if taken too long). I also use fresh garlic as several cloves at a time dipped in honey and chew them; I may repeat this several times the first day. That's a spicy and aromatic natural antibiotic and immune defender; you can alternately use the odorless garlic caps, several capsules 3 times daily if you don't want to smell, but they're not quite as effective. Echinacea and goldenseal alcohol extract can also be used to support immunity and cleanse the membranes. Some help may be achieved with olive leaf extract as a mild anti-viral herb. Of course, drink lots of water, herbal teas, and hot soup. You can press several cloves of garlic into your bowl of soup before you eat, instead of eating the garlic straight.
This is an excellent exercise to overcome the drowsiness and stiffness that one feels on waking in the morning. As you do this exercise, you will feel an invigorating sensation from your vertebrae getting a good massage. It will limber up your spine and keep it in a flexible and youthful condition. It is invaluable for those who are using yoga to dodge old age. It will also help you to sleep soundly. Thus, it is a good prescription for insomnia.
You may feel a little clumsy and awkward the first day when you do this exercise. Some people feel like losing their balance and falling down. In a few days you will feel accustomed to the rocking action and will start enjoying it. At that time you can combine rocking with deep breathing. Inhale while rocking backwards and exhale while returning forward.
Technique
Sit down at the end of the exercise pad to make sure that your back will not hit the hard floor. Draw up your knees, and bend your head down. Put your hands under your knees. You can join your hands or not depending on what is easy on you.
Keeping your spine rounded, gently swing back and forth, imitating the swinging motion of a rocking chair. Don't straighten your spine as you will roll backward or you will find yourself lying flat on your back, unable to swing forward again. Don't roll back too far on your neck. Don't try doing the rocking exercise too slowly either. Imagine you are a rocking chair in motion. Feel for the massaging action on your spine. Enjoy the fun.
Hint:
Straighten your knees just as you swing backward and then immediately bend them again as you swing forward. Don't pause after you have swung back but simply continue the to-and-fro movement. Otherwise you may get `stuck.'
Time:
Do this exercise four or six times, then lie down to relax until your breath returns to normal again. Take a few deep breaths while still lying on the floor.
Benefits
Makes the spine more flexible and youthful.
Massages all the vertebrae in the neck and spine.
If done in the morning it helps to overcome the drowsiness and stiffness that people often feel on waking up.
It's also very beneficial just before sleep.
The massaging action on the spine tends to relax the whole nervous system and establishes a better connection between the central nervous system and the rest of the body.
To prevent eye diseases, first thing in the morning splash cold water into the open eyes. Or, when brushing your teeth in the morning, begin by "brushing" the back of the throat. This will make you gag slightly, and will bring up mucus. It will also make the eyes tear, washing the surface of the eyes. To keep the eyes healthy, drink a mixture of 6 ounces of carrot juice, 6 ounces of celery juice, 2 ounces of endive juice and 2 ounces of parsley juice. Almonds are also good for the eyes.
For soreness and redness, place grated raw potato between two pieces of sterile gauze and apply to the eyes. When the potato dries out, replace it.
For bloodshot eyes, apply a drop of warm honey to the open eyes.
All of us know what sleep is and we know how it feels; however, while much progress has been made by sleep scientists, the essential nature of sleep still remains unknown. Approximately 60 million Americans suffer each year from some form of sleep deprivation. While research continues, sleep still remains one of the body's most mysterious processes. We do know that sleep is absolutely necessary for survival. The lack of sleep for millions of people worldwide is not only a major medical concern, but a major big business. Even occasional sleeping problems can make daily life feel more stressful or cause you to be less productive. Sleep loss affects growth hormone secretion that is linked to obesity and impairs the body's ability to use insulin, which can lead to the onset of diabetes. Lack of sleep affects one's capacity to perform tasks involving memory, learning, and logical reasoning, and shows a direct correlation with disease. It is paramount that we discover more about this activity where we spend a third of our lives - sleeping.
Until sleep scientists and researchers come up with better answers and solutions, countless prescription and non-prescription drugs, herbs, remedies, technologies, etc., are the regimen for many. To help achieve a good night's sleep the more natural way, numerous tips have been cited in almost every form of advertisement available. Although you have probably tried many of them, one of the following tips might just be the one that will help you get a healthier, more natural night's rest. They are intended for the average adult, but not necessarily for children or persons experiencing medical problems:
Imaging - think of a hammock - you're up off the ground, wrapped in a cocoon of comfort, swaying gently in the open air. The sun is warm on your face & there's a breeze blowing you back & forth. This visualization helps you "see" what sleep's reward will be, getting you more in the mood to sleep. Visualization has proved helpful in developing the appropriate brain wave patterns for sleep.
Magnesium - has a calming effect on the nervous system. It is part of bones & cells, especially the smooth cells of arteries, & assists in the absorption of calcium & potassium. Over 300 enzymes need magnesium to function properly. When combined with B6, it helps to reduce & dissolve calcium phosphate stones. It is so important, that the brain stores a "safety supply" to have in the event of a drop in the magnesium reserves. We like the powdered effervescent magnesium found at most health food stores, called CALM.
Nutmeg - grind fresh nutmeg & serve it with warm, organic, preferably raw or unpasturized milk & honey. Milk is naturally high in calcium & rich in tryptophan; together they can be a powerful tranquilizer.
Hot foot baths - in the East, a hot foot bath is a traditional remedy; it draws blood from the brain to calm a racing mind. Try soaking your feet in a hot foot bath with a cupful of Epsom salts and a few drops of lavender essential oil, which will soothe you. Your feet absorb the magnesium from the Epsom salts and relax you further.
Toe wiggling - lie on your back & wiggle your toes up & down 12 times; do both feet at the same time. Your entire body relaxes. According to the science of Reflexology, your feet are a kind of master control panel for the rest of your body. "Meridians" in the body - those channels of energy treated by acupuncture - end up in the feet. So, the end of those meridians in your feet connect with every organ & every part of your entire body.
Stomach rub - soothes down the digestive system & helps bring about a deeper relaxation. Lie on your back & place your hand on your navel. Begin to make small circles in a clockwise direction as you gently glide your hand over your stomach. Let your circles gradually become bigger & bigger. When your circles reach the outside of your stomach, gradually reduce their size until you are back at your navel again. Reverse the direction; repeat the whole series with your other hand, & do several times.
Listening to an audiobook - the brain works like a tape player - with one main auditory loop that processes words. If you fill that loop with an interesting book, there's no room for your own worrisome internal narrative. Especially helpful for those who have continuous thoughts running through their heads.
The Great Western Vehicle is conducting research into the phenomena of
meditative absorption. If you believe that you may be experiencing any kind
of phenomena that is associated with the practice of meditation, such as
meditative absorption, then we would like to receive your case history.
After some time of gathering case histories we hope to select a group of
subjects who fit certain criteria who will allow us to test them while they
are in meditation. However, wiliness to be tested is not a criteria for
filling out our case history questionnaire.
From an exhaustive cross-cultural study of the literature of gnosis we have
found that meditative absorption has certain common characteristics that
nearly every subject manifests, regardless of their culture or religion. If
you manifest any one of the following characteristics while in meditation,
then it is very possible that you are indeed experiencing meditative
absorption, and we would therefore like to receive your case history.
Some of the characteristics of meditative absorption are as follows:
1) Tactile sensations that are associated with the chakras, such as a
tingling or a pressure at the chest, throat, forehead or crown of head.
2) Tactile sensations in the hands or feet that could be perceived as heat,
or tingling or a pressure in the hands and/or feet.
3) Sounds that may emerge only during meditation, or at first only during
meditation. Those sounds could be a rushing sound like the wind, a water
fall, or the rain; a chirping sound like cicadas or crickets; a ringing
sound, like a bell, or a high pitched electronic sound; or, the sudden onset
of tinnitus after the practice of meditation, and exacerbated by the
practice of meditation.
4) Sweat smells or tastes, such as incense or honey, that only arise in
association with meditation.
5) Luminance or an increase of light or visual images in association with
the practice of meditation.
6) Any sense of vertigo or the feeling of flight from the practice of
meditation.

Contentment is a state which many of us seek and often have difficulty finding. When we do achieve it, it is often fleeting and leaves us all too soon. Contentment consists of physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects. These four aspects can be consciously cultivated by following simple Ayurvedic and Yogic guidelines. The following practices will increase all of these aspects of contentment.
Upon waking, before opening your eyes, mentally affirm your desire to enjoy and appreciate each moment of your day. Starting the day with a positive intent is a very powerful way to attract the conscious state you desire. Morning Ayurvedic Massage
Before bathing, massage your temples and feet with warm Brahmi oil (putting the bottle of oil in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes will warm it up). You may also rub the oil into the rest of your body. Brahmi oil calms and clears the mind and enhances your mediation practice. Then take your daily shower. This practice of Ayurvedic oil massage or abhyanga has powerful effects.
The Sanskrit word sneha can be translated as both "oil" and "love." The effects of Ayurvedic oil massage are similar to those received when you are saturated with love. Like the experience of being loved, oil massage can give a deep feeling of stability and warmth. Conscious Breathing for Contentment and Balance (Pranayama)
1. Find a quiet place and sit comfortably cross-legged while lengthening your spine or in a chair with your spine straight and your feet flat on the floor.
2. Close the right nostril with your right thumb and inhale through the left nostril (inhaling into your belly).
3. After you have inhaled hold your breath for just a moment.
4. Exhale through your right nostril while closing the left with the ring and little finger of your right hand.
5. Repeat steps 1-3, this time start by inhaling through the right nostril while you close the left nostril with your ring and little finger.
If you do this breathing exercise for five minutes, you will tune in to your natural state of contentment.
In Alternate Nostril Pranayama the male and female aspects of our being become balanced. When we inhale through our left nostril we charge the right brain. When we inhale through our right nostril we charge the left brain. When these two energies are balanced we access the neutral aspect of ourselves which is capable of connecting us to our Spirit. Om Meditation
1. Still sitting comfortably on the floor or on the edge of a chair with your spine straight, tuck your chin down towards your chest so your neck will lengthen.
2. Bring your hands together at your sternum. Close your eyes and internally focus at your third eye in the middle of your forehead.
3. Inhale deeply, and as you exhale chant Om.
4. Inhale again, chant Om and continue for three chants or up to 3 minutes.
While you are chanting your mind may produce many thoughts. Watch your thoughts come and go. Like a surfer riding his surfboard, we can ride the wave of the Om sound.
Yoga scriptures and other major religions believe both we and the earth we live on were created from sound. By chanting mantras consciously we can re-create ourselves or align ourselves with the higher aspects of the universe. In yogic cosmology the earth was created when Om was chanted. So chanting Om takes us home. When we align ourselves with our soul and spirit we become filled with contentment and bliss.
The Brahmi oil massage, Alternate Nostril Breathing and Om chanting will create a powerful reserve that you can access throughout the day.
This Teaching says, "Purity of mind, body and Soul is
happiness beyond any worldly pleasure."
TEACHING DELIVERED THROUGH FRANCES M. KLUG ON SEPTEMBER 10,1993
"TIME TO FACE REALITY"
"Sometimes we have a gold mine close to
us in the form of a human being, a human
relationship, but we allow ourselves to take
things for granted, ignoring the worth of the
individual, and abuse the person or even
persons by our own selfishness, indifference
to their opinions and feelings.
This also applies to our Soul. We ignore
It because we do not see It or understand the
True Existence of It, only because we place so
much importance on worldly pleasures,
irregardless of what danger they are to our
physical, mental or spiritual life.
God has given us so many obvious signs
of His Existence, yet we ignore the obvious
and dwell on the humanistic weaknesses of
what others seem to be having so much
pleasure from and with.
Purity of mind, body and Soul is
happiness beyond any worldly pleasure. Why
cannot mankind see it, when it is so obvious
how good it feels when something or someone
is spiritually sound and radiates goodness, not
envy, and to be with this individual there is a
feeling of inner happiness, strength, and hope.
Why not work at being that individual
naturally? It is not impossible."

RE: A personal message from Adam Engle
Dear Mark:
Two weeks ago I went to a private screening of Al Gore's new film, "An
Inconvenient Truth". In this film, Mr. Gore sets out the facts about
global warming in a very skillful and clear manner. The film is
hopeful and argues that we still have time to avert an oncoming catastrophe
if we, as a culture, face the facts and act responsibly.
Mr. Gore explained that for the film to have maximum effectiveness as a
tool for change, it is important for people to see the film when it
just opens in their communities. The first few days are critical. This
will greatly extend the run of the film in the theaters. He asked us to
see the film when it opens in our communities and bring five friends.
I am passing this request from Mr. Gore forward to you. The film opens
today in selected theaters, and will continue to open in theaters
around the country in the coming month. I am asking you to go see the film
when it opens in your community and take five family members and
friends.
You can visit this website to find the opening date and theater near
you.

The Five Tibetan Rites is a yoga routine based on a ritual of exercises discovered in the early 1900s by a British army colonel, Colonel Bradford, who was living in a Himalayan monastery. They are practiced around the world and are said to prevent aging. In 1939, Peter Kelder published The Original Five Tibetan Rites of Rejuvenation, which helped spread the rites in the western world. Mr. Kelder has since updated the book The Eye of Revelation - The Original Five Rites of Rejuvenation, Borderland Sciences Research Foundation, 1989, ISBN 0-945685-04-1.
The rites are comprised of five different movements (with a sixth added for good measure), with each movement performed up to 21 times (Tibetans believe 21 is a perfect, mystical number). It is best to start with 3 repetitions of each exercise and gradually increase the repetitions. The entire routine can be completed in less than 10 minutes.
For thousands of years, medical practitioners have maintained that the body has seven principal energy centers which correspond to the seven endocrine glands, also known as chakras. Chakras are essentially energies within spinning vortexes. As a vortex is increased, the life force becomes stronger and more directed.
Recent medical research has uncovered convincing evidence that the aging process is hormone-regulated. The five ancient Tibetan rites are said to normalize hormonal imbalances in the body, thereby holding the key to lasting youth, health, and vitality. The rites stimulate the energy system in the body, wake up the chakras, and get energy moving from your core outward to your extremities. The theory behind the rites is that your kundalini (spiritual energy) is stored and lies at the base of your spine and that these rites access that energy in a very efficient, fast, and user-friendly way.
An important part of the Tibetan exercises is a conscious synchronization of breathing while performing physical activity. Before beginning the exercises, practice the basic 4 -stage breathing technique ( inhale, hold, exhale, hold empty lungs).
No exercise should be so intense that it makes you feel exhausted. For example, if you are "loosing your breath", it indicates that your body is in an anaerobic (low oxygen) condition and that you should slow down. If you can not talk normally after performing an exercise, you should slow down. When performing the exercises, the main emphasis should be on breath synchronization and fluency, rather than on speed and number of repetitions.
Some call these rites isometric exercises. Although they are helpful in stretching muscles and joints and improving muscle tone, this is not their primary purpose. A slow vortex causes that part of the body to deteriorate, while a faster one cause nervousness, anxiety, and exhaustion. Abnormal vortexes produces abnormal health, deterioration, and old age. The rites normalize the speed of the spinning vortexes by keeping them spinning at the same rate and working in harmony.
Here are the Five Tibetan Rites and how they work on the body (remember to breathe deeply using the diaphragm during the movements).
Rite 1
The first rite is the practice of spinning, which effects the emotional body by speeding up the vortexes. Children naturally spin while playing. As one spins clockwise, Lamas say that negative residues are flung out of the body and the bridge is strengthened between the left and right hemispheres. Spinning stimulates the body's energy system and wakes up the chakras.
Spinning. Extend your arms out to the sides and spin (in a clockwise direction). Go as fast as you can without losing control (slow down or stop if you get dizzy). Try to do 21 revolutions.
Follow your right arm so that you spin around to your right. As you begin to spin, focus your vision on a single point straight ahead and continue holding your vision on that point as long as possible. Eventually you have to let it leave your field of vision as your head spins with the body. As this occurs, turn your head around quickly and refocus on your reference point as soon as possible. Using a reference point helps prevent dizziness. Stop spinning as soon as you feel slightly dizzy. Lie on the floor and breathe deeply before you begin the next rite. Raise your hands above your head to stretch the back.
In India, the Maulawiyah, or whirling dervishes, spin unceasingly in a religious frenzy. They always spin clockwise. The older dervishes are virile, strong, and robust, far more so than most men of their age. Lamas say that this excessive spinning may be detrimental as it over-stimulates some of the vortexes, which first accelerates the flow of energy but then blocks it. This building up and tearing down action causes the dervishes to experience a kind of "psychic rush," which they mistake for something spiritual .
Lamas do not carry the whirling to an excess. While the whirling dervishes may spin hundreds of times, the Lamas only do it 21 times, just enough to stimulate the vortexes into action.
Rite 2
Rite two is similar to Western abdominal exercises. By raising the head to the chest, you create an extra stimulus to the solar plexus chakra and the conception vessel moving through the center of the truck.
Use a thick rug or pad to protect your back as you lie on the floor. Lamas perform the rites on what Westerners call a prayer rug, which is about two feet wide and six feet long. The rug is fairly thick and is made of wool and a natural fiber. It is used solely to insulate the body from the cold floor, but since religious significance is attached to everything the Lamas do, it is called a "prayer rug."
Leg Raises. First lie flat on the floor, face up. Fully extended your arms along your sides, and place the palms of your hands against the floor, keeping the fingers close together. Then, raise your head off the floor, tucking the chin against the chest. As you do this, lift your legs, knees straight, into a vertical position. If possible, let the legs extend back over the body, toward the head; but do not let the knees bend. Then slowly lower both the head and the legs, knees straight, to the floor. Allow all the muscles to relax, continue breathing in the same rhythm. Breathe in deeply as you lift your legs and breathe out as you lower your legs.
Upon sitting up, stretch your legs out in front of you. Starting at the thigh area, stroke down the outside of your legs with your hands until you reach your feet. Grab your feet on the outside, pulling your head as close to your straight knees as possible.
Rite 3
Rite three opens the solar plexus and heart. We begin life by drawing energy in through the umbilical area. Lamas believe we continue the habit of sucking into the solar plexus, which is the seat of the emotional body, without being aware of what we are taking in. All kinds of emotional energies enter in this way. Psychically, we attract negative emotions that relate to those we ourselves are carrying. Thus, fear or anger inside us acts as a magnet to people who are carrying the same kind of energies.
Contraction interferes with the functioning of the solar plexus ganglion that relays messages to the brain relevant to our sense of safety and stimulates the "fight or flight" reflex. This rite provides an extension and a powerful lifting of the entire trunk, which is the opposite of a defensive, contractive stance. By performing this motion, you are reversing the energy flow and raising the energy to the heart area.
Camel. This is a classic back bend. Kneel on the floor, knees under your hips, toes flat, with the body erect. Place hands on back of legs just under the buttocks. Tilt the head and neck forward, tucking the chin against the chest. Then, tilt the head and neck backward, arching the spine backward, and look upward. After arching, return to the original position, and repeat 21 up to times. Inhale deeply as you arch the spine, exhale as you return to an erect position. This rite opens up the front of the body and spine.
Establish a rhythmic breathing pattern. Breathe in deeply as you arch the spine. Breathe out as you return to an erect position.
When you are finished with this series of motions, extend your arms at shoulder level straight out in front of you and lean back without arching your back. You will feel this stretching the facia lata at the outer thighs.
Rite 4
This rite causes a pleasant stimulation throughout the sacral area which stirs the meridians and the energies going to and from the groin and down the legs. This rite strengthens and tones the legs and glutes.
Tabletop. Sit on floor with your legs extended, body erect, feet flexed and about 12 inches apart, palms flat on floor next to your hips, fingers pointed toward your feet. Tuck the chin forward against the chest. Now, tilt the head backward as far as it will go. At the same time, bend your knees and push up to a "tabletop" position, arms straight. Let your head fall back gently. The trunk of the body will be in a straight line with the upper legs, horizontal to the floor. Then, tense every muscle in the body. Finally, relax your muscles as you return to the original sitting position. Rest before repeating the procedure.
Breathe in as you raise up, hold your breath as you tense the muscles, breathe out completely as you come down. Continue breathing in the same rhythm as long as you rest between repetitions.
Rite 5
Rite five brings an immediate change in the energy currents of the body. It makes one feel strong and invigorated and brings a happy glow to the face. This is the most powerful rite in terms of speeding up the chakric vortexes.
Up Dog and Down Dog. Begin on all fours, toes flexed, palms on floor, weight distributed evenly among your knees, your palms, and the balls of your feet. Throughout this rite, your hands and feet should be kept straight. Start with your arms perpendicular to the floor, and the spine arched downward, so that the body is in a sagging position. Slowly lift your buttocks toward the sky, with a flat back, lowering your head, so your body makes an inverted "V." Tuck your chin to your chest. Pause, then lower your buttocks while pressing your palms into the floor, until your legs are in a plank position (parallel to the ground), moving your chest out and shoulders back. Inhale on your way up; exhale on your way down. Repeat, up to 21 times. In the rite, your body is moving in concert, moving energy up the spine.
Follow the deep breathing pattern used in the previous rites. Breathe in deeply as you raise the body, breathe out fully as you lower it.
Rite 6
Tibetans say that this special sixth rite will make you into a super-being.
Deep Breathing. Stand comfortably and exhale as you bend from the waist, placing your hands on your knees. Expel the last bit of air from your lungs and without taking in new breath, return to an erect position. Place your hands on your hips, with fingers to the front and press as hard as you can while sucking in the abdomen. This will raise your shoulders and chest. While holding in the abdomen, also squeeze the pubococcygeal muscle up to emphasize the upward thrust. Hold this position and bring your closed eyeballs to the point between the eyebrows so that all this lower chakric energy will rise up to the highest centers. When you must take a breath, breathe in through your nose and then exhale through the mouth as you drop your arms down to your sides to relax. Take in several normal breaths through the nose and mouth before beginning again.
To you guys who already subscribe to his newsletter, I apologize, but I thought it was a worth while article to include for spring.
We all are hesitant about spring-cleaning, yet spring is the time of renewal, of cleansing, of getting rid of the old to make room for the new. This spring take a nice, long look at your life, and think about getting rid of the old thoughts and beliefs that are keeping you down, and preventing you from moving ahead. Take a walk in the sunshine and feel the beauty that the spring can offer. Feel the warmth of the sun on your face. Smell the beautiful flowers and be grateful for all those things in your life that are working. Shake off the dust and cobwebs of the winter and feel the vitality that a healing spring season can bring to the body and mind. Clean up your living space, and throw out the clutter and junk. Organize yourself. Go through your wardrobe and donate old or unworn clothes. Consider a juice fast to cleanse your body of accumulated toxins. Start an outdoor exercise program that lets you appreciate the beauty of nature during this season of ideal weather. Take weekend trips to tranquil, outdoor settings where you can become one with the environment and feel its grandeur. Visit those outdoor "power spots" that invigorate and inspire you. As part of your spring cleaning, consider flooding the body with enzymes, chlorophyll, phytonutrients, and quality fiber - with lots of juicing. Finally, as an important component of your spring-cleaning, consider both my Deep Cleanse recipe, and implementing my Elimination Diet as part of a spring-cleaning for your entire body. My Deep Cleanse recipe is a general all purpose juice cleanse for the whole body based on both good nutrition and traditional folk remedies. Nourish your body with the nutrients that detoxify. My Elimination Diet is designed to remove all of the dead "foods" and substances that are bad for you, and replace them with energy foods that will support your health and immune system. Listed below are both the Deep Cleanse and Elimination Diet that I like to recommend for better health and nutrition. I can't think of a better way to give your body the long awaited spring-cleaning that it needs and deserves.
Wheatgrass can be juiced by using a wheatgrass press. You can also make wheatgrass juice by squeezing the grass into clusters with your hands and juicing these clusters through a traditional fruit and vegetable juicer. If your juicer can't do wheatgrass, you can buy the powder. One teaspoon of the powder is equal to 2 ounces of fresh wheatgrass.
2 large apples, cored and quartered 3 stalks celery 1 grapefruit 1 lemon 1 lime ½ cup cabbage ½ clove garlic, peeled 1 T ginger 2 ounces wheatgrass juice 2 T Friendly Fiber Powder ½ tsp turmeric 1 tsp flaxseed oil pinch cayenne pepper
Push all the fruits and vegetables through the juicer, except wheatgrass juice.
Add wheatgrass juice to the juice mixture and stir well.
Blend in the Friendly Fiber, turmeric, oil and cayenne.
Serve immediately.
