Viparita Karani (Legs-Up-the-Wall Pose)
Said to reverse the normal downward flow of a precious subtle fluid
called amrita (immortal) or soma (extract) in the Hatha Yoga
Pradipika, modern yogis agree that Viparita Karani may have the
power to cure whatever ails you.
(vip-par-ee-tah car-AHN-ee)
viparita = turned around, reversed, inverted
karani = doing, making, action
Benefits
Relieves tired or cramped legs and feet
Gently stretches the back legs, front torso, and the back of the
neck
Relieves mild backache
Calms the mind
Contraindications
Many teachers maintain that Viparita Karani is an inversion, and as
such should be avoided during menstruation. Others though recommend
the pose even during menstruation. Check with your teacher before
performing this pose during menstruation. As with any inversion
Viparita Karani should be avoided if you have serious eye problems,
such as glaucoma. With serious neck or back problems only perform
this pose with the supervision of an experienced teacher. If your
feet begin to tingle during this pose, bend your knees, touch your
soles together, and slide the outer edges of your feet down the
wall, bringing your heels close to your pelvis.
Step by Step
The pose described here is a passive, supported variation of the
Shoulderstand-like Viparita Karani. For your support you'll need one
or two thickly folded blankets or a firm round bolster. You'll also
need to rest your legs vertically (or nearly so) on a wall or other
upright support.
Before performing the pose, determine two things about your support:
its height and its distance from the wall. If you're stiffer, the
support should be lower and placed farther from the wall; if you're
more flexible, use a higher support that is closer to the wall. Your
distance from the wall also depends on your height: if you're
shorter move closer to the wall, if taller move farther from the
wall. Experiment with the position of your support until you find
the placement that works for you.
Start with your support about 5 to 6 inches away from the wall. Sit
sideways on right end of the support, with your right side against
the wall (left-handers can substitute "left" for "right" in these
instructions). Exhale and, with one smooth movement, swing your legs
up onto the wall and your shoulders and head lightly down onto the
floor. The first few times you do this, you may ignominiously slide
off the support and plop down with your buttocks on the floor. Don't
get discouraged. Try lowering the support and/or moving it slightly
further off the wall until you gain some facility with this
movement, then move back closer to the wall.
Your sitting bones don't need to be right against the wall, but they
should be "dripping" down into the space between the support and the
wall. Check that the front of your torso gently arches from the
pubis to the top of the shoulders. If the front of your torso seems
flat, then you've probably slipped a bit off the support. Bend your
knees, press your feet into the wall and lift your pelvis off the
support a few inches, tuck the support a little higher up under your
pelvis, then lower your pelvis onto the support again.
Lift and release the base of your skull away from the back of your
neck and soften your throat. Don't push your chin against your
sternum; instead let your sternum lift toward the chin. Take a small
roll (made from a towel for example) under your neck if the cervical
spine feels flat. Open your shoulder blades away from the spine and
release your hands and arms out to your sides, palms up.
Keep your legs relatively firm, just enough to hold them vertically
in place. Release the heads of the thigh bones and the weight of
your belly deeply into your torso, toward the back of the pelvis.
Soften your eyes and turn them down to look into your heart.
Stay in this pose anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes. Be sure not to
twist off the support when coming out. Instead, slide off the
support onto the floor before turning to the side. You can also bend
your knees and push your feet against the wall to lift your pelvis
off the support. Then slide the support to one side, lower your
pelvis to the floor, and turn to the side. Stay on your side for a
few breaths, and come up to sitting with an exhalation.

Therapeutic Applications
Gheranda heaps praise on this pose (though that he's probably
talking about a version more akin Headstand) and states that
Viparita Karani "destroys" old age and death. "You will become an
Adept in all the worlds and will not perish even at world
dissolution (pralaya)" (Gheranda Samhita 3.36).
Svatmarama (who's probably got something more like shoulderstand in
mind) claims that after six months of practice, "grey hairs and
wrinkles become inconspicuous" (Hatha Yoga Pradipika 3.82). We
should take these traditional benefits with a pinch of salt. Modern
teachers do, however, believe that Viparita Karani is good for most
everything that ails you, including:
Anxiety
Arthritis
Digestive problems
Headache
High and low blood pressure
Insomnia
Migraine
Mild depression
Respiratory ailments
Urinary disorders
Varicose veins
Menstrual cramps
Premenstrual syndrome
Menopause
Modifications & Props
In addition to a bolster or blanket for support, two props are very
popular for Viparita Karani--a strap and a sand bag. Once in the
pose you can snug the strap around your thighs, just above the
knees. The strap will help hold your legs in place, allowing you to
further relax the legs and soften the groins.
The sand bag is a little harder to get in place. Once in the pose,
bend your knees and slide your feet down the wall, but keep your
ankles flexed, soles parallel to the ceiling. As best you can, lay
the bag across your soles (or heels) and then re-straighten the
knees, pushing the bag actively toward the ceiling. This weight on
the legs helps release tension in the lower back.
Variations
If you have enough wall space, you can slide your legs apart into a
wide "V" to stretch your inner thighs and groins. You also can bend
your knees, touch the soles of your feet together, and slide the
outer edges of your feet down the wall, bringing your heels toward
the pelvis. Then you can push your hands against the top inner
thighs to stretch the groins. Remember, however, never push on your
knees to open the groins.
Preparatory Asanas
Viparita Karani is usually considered to be a restorative pose,
sequenced near the end of either a restorative or active practice.
But Viparita Karani can also be practiced as a pose in itself.
Excellent preparations include:
Setu Bandha Sarvangasana
Supta Baddha Konasana
Uttanasana
Virasana
Subsequent Asanas
Viparita Karani is usually sequenced near the end of a practice just
prior to Savasana or sitting pranayama.
Beginners Tip
Use your breath to ground the heads of the thighs bones into the
wall, which helps release your groins, belly, and spine. In the pose
imagine that each inhalation is descending through your torso and
pressing the heads of your thigh bones closer to the wall. Then with
each exhale, pin your thighs to the wall and let your torso spill
over the bolster away from the wall and onto the floor.
Partnering
A partner can also help you ground the heads of the thigh bones into
the wall. Have her stand at your head as you perform the pose. She
should then lean forward and spread her hands around your front
thighs, just where they join the pelvis. On your inhale she should
push the thighs closer to the wall, and as you exhale, she should
hold them firmly to the wall as you release the front torso away
from the thighs. Repeat for several breaths.
8 out of 10 individuals, who work with computers a lot, and spend
all day at their desks, suffer from shoulder pains, lower back pains
and muscle aches. Such conditions are caused by the lack of
nutrition and oxygen in the muscles that are left tense for long
periods. When the oxygen supply in the muscle is poor, calcium ions
and acetylcholine are not dissolved. This poses the threat of the
condition to develop into a myalgia. Experts say that in order to
prevent such a condition, light stretching for 10 minutes a day is
much more effective than excessive exercises for long periods.
Except, when stretching, it is more effective to focus your
consciousness in the areas that feel tight and harmonize your
respiration with the movements rather than merely doing the
stretching alone. Imagine this scenario.
1. 9:00 a.m. Raising your shoulders to supply oxygen to the brain.
You are starting your day at work! Let's loosen our shoulders so
that we may activate the parts of our brain that are not yet awake.
Keeping your hands on your lap, inhale while lifting up your
shoulders high enough to touch your ears. As you exhale, relax your
shoulders. (Repeat 5 times.) Your shoulders (trapezius) that have
been hardened from stress are loosened. At the same time, the blood
circulation around your neck and shoulders improves, and improves
the oxygen supply to your brain.
2. 10:00 a.m. Neck turning eliminates headaches.
As you pick up speed at work, a headache gradually develops. Now,
shake off your shoulders, and gently turn your neck. Move your neck
forward and back, and to left and right. This time, slowly turn your
neck right and left while focusing on the areas that feel tight.
This improves the blood circulation in your neck, and thus clears
your head.
3. 11:00 a.m. Stretching your back makes you feel lighter.
Stretch your back an hour before you finish your morning work. Your
body will feel much lighter. As you inhale, stretch your arms upward
with your fingers locked and palms facing up. Lower your arms as you
exhale. (Repeat 5 times.)
4. 1:00 p.m. Head tapping chases away drowsiness.
Soon after lunch, you begin to feel drowsy. At this time, it is good
to stimulate your brain, lightly. With the tips of your fingers,
evenly tap your skull. With your fingers, gradually press the areas
around your ears about 3~5 seconds, and then massage your ears with
pulling motions.
5. 2:00 p.m. Eyeball exercise relieves fatigue in your eyes.
When you work at your computer for a long period, your eyes can
easily get tired. During work, do this exercise intermittently.
Relax your entire body. Either rest your eyes by closing them or do
a simple eye massage. It will relieve fatigue in your eyes. After
rubbing your hands until they become hot, place them on your
eyelids. Rotate your eyes to the top and bottom, and to the right
and left. Pressing your temples on either side of your forehead will
help clear your eyes and improve your concentration. Finally, smooth
your entire face with your hands evenly.
6. 3:00 p.m. Push-ups refresh you.
This is the hour when you find it very hard to concentrate on your
work and feel lethargic. If you feel that way, do muscle exercises
that will quickly reenergize your entire body. Here is a good way to
do it: place your hands on your desk; while keeping your lower
abdomen tight, do a minimum of 30 push-ups at a 45-degree angle.
7. 4:00 p.m. Trunk twisting erects your spine.
For people working at a desk, and therefore tied to a chair for
extended periods, their back muscles can easily become rigid. Try to
avoid undue pressure on your spine by keeping a good posture during
work, and twist your trunk to erect your spine. Keep your right hand
on your left lap. As you inhale, turn your waist left as far as
possible. As you exhale, return to the starting position. Focusing
your consciousness on your spine, alternate sides. This exercise
restores the balance in your twisted spine, and improves your blood
circulation.
8. 5:00 p.m. Arm crossing and finger locking prevents headaches.
This movement is good for people who use their fingers, wrists and
shoulder joints repetitively. It thoroughly releases your stiffened
wrist joints, and relaxes your shoulders. Cross one arm over the
other in an extended position so that the palms of your hands come
together, their will be a twist at the place where your wrists
cross. Interlace your fingers Rotate your wrists inward and stretch
out your arms. You should be able to straighten your arms in this
position, but the stiffer your shoulders, the harder it is to
stretch the arms. Practice this exercise regularly to improve and as
you practice, alternate between your left and right hand and arm on
the top.
I have now...thanks!

Unless you have a psychic doctor, that's the way it should be...:)
As far as fear goes, that wouldbe something you nedd to address within
first if you ask me....at least that's the approach I would use if I
wewre in that situation...after that look outwardly...
> yeah, your right in that they always seem to need to protect

They probably don't have time to know that....and given human nature, if
you were to bring up the subject they'd run anyway....:)

hmmmm....shrug....perhaps if different words were chosen to convey the
thought...perhaps they now hear words that trigger a fear reaction based
on past experience...it leaves them unable to sense your true intentions?
One thing is certain, stopping communication would only render the
situation worse....:)

Of course we know that's not true...;)
They're not gods...just people with loved ones...they get up from sleep
the sme as you or I....go to work....etc. They possess a certain
knowledge...as do we.....nothing more....
> but i think, and i reason, and i anolyze, and i am not heard due to

Well, stop thinking, reasoning and analyzing...just speak from the
heart..:) Hard to do at first but gets easier with practice..as if
forming new habit...lol
In time your true intention will be carried on your words and they will
understand and not fear....that's the general ide anyway...
> i would get angry at my body, cause it would be so much easier as

This may be where patience may come into play....as if your body were a
child and was trying to learn something new.....perhaps the subject is
diffcult because "it has been doing it the other way" for so long?
> it's so easy to praise a person, but it's so hard to share when

That is true for me also...One teacher I read claimed one could love
everyone....but that didn't mean you had to like them all...LOL
> anyways, i am seeking to understand other ways, beside chiros, and

I've found stretching to be the most helpful for my own skeletal
trouble...keeps the muscles and ligaments (etc.) loose thereby allowing
the "bones" to find their natural place....although sometimes that
natural place isn't where it should be naturally!
I figure it took 25 years to get there in that position...it will take
time to work it's way back...I can speed that with the stretching and
breathing (yogic-type disciplines).
When I breathe deeply enough and settle enough, I can focus on making my
back relax...eventually on one of the inhales I feel something slide
back into place...
There's a man named Glen Morris who wrote the book Pathnotes of an
American Ninja in which he describes how he was able to manipulate his
bones back into place after his kundalini rose..

Sure...part of human learning me thinks...:) I've noticed it gets in the
way sometimes...

Especially in the right shoulder....but mine results from several
"accidents"...old H.S. football injuries, car wrecks, falling off a
bridge 30 feets...LOL Don't try tht at home btw...LOL

Hmmm. Could it be something is turned left and then brought to center?
That would be ideal I would think..It sure sounds as if something is
pinching the nerve when to the left....ask them to show you on their
model.. (That helps with visualization during relaxation or
meditation)(p.s. - if they won't maybe find another chiro?)

Do the chiros know about that maneuver? If great when you can find
something that helps like that! (slightly envious...:)

Hmmm...I have a similar spot in the middle.....everytime they adjust it
it's much worse....I finally found a chiro that agreed with me that that
particular spot would probably be better left alone...I only have
trouble with it when they adjust it though, which is different from your
condition...
Remember their training is to first put things back into thier natural
position....but a "better" doctor would listen to what the patient is
telling them and then offer explanations for the treament I would think...

More his problem than yours.....are the other chiros you could try...?
The is more than one school of thought about how to proceed in treatment
in the chiropractic world....for instance..
One school believes in putting the bone into place and letting the body
grow accustomed to the new position...
Another one believes the area around the bone show be "worked" so as
tolet it slip back into the natural position on it's own....
I favorite a combined approch...there are times it should be forced back
and times it shouldbe allowed to takeit's course, imo...but I'm not a
doctor...;)

That just doesn't seem right....he should pay more attention to tht
condition...:/

My atlas just will not stay in place....he puts it back, in the mroning
it is out of place again...very loose! Surprising he didn't put that
back...my chiro thinks if the atlas is out of kilter, so will the rest
of the spine....same for the tailbone...seems to make sense...?

Better to let them tend to that one I would think....you don't want to
break your own neck!

Ahhhhhhhh...I see...this new situation is illiciting deep feelings is it?
That is a whole other discussion in itself and one I'm also working on
for me...:)
Just know it can be undone...;)

The frustration must have been overwhelming! The powers that be must

those trials...;)

Exactly! In those situations perhps "call timeout" so you can gather
your thoughts...remember you are paying him. He works for you. And you
want your money's worth right?...:)
(p.s. - One day when I had a cold I went to the doctor. He told me to
say "Ah", looked in my throat..and them exclaimed that I was "sick"...I
said, "I know I'm sick, wht do you think I'm doing here! You're going
to charge me for that!?...He then took extra time to examine
me...Needless to say he wasn't my doctor for much longer fter that!)

It hurts. I understand. Been there myself. Time heals all though...and
good friends..;)

There you go!...I wonder if that's where sayings such s "Fight the good
fight"...come from?
To leave the world is the easy way. Much the same as it is to frown
rather than smile, (it literally takes more muscles to smile than to
frown!). The rewards of the easy way are not nearly as great...
You have a disticnt advantage over us Susie in that you are most likely
much more in tune with your body and how it feels because of your early
life experiences...without the words to describe...you felt everything,
from the body to the soul, in it's purest unconditoned form...Some spend
years meditating to try to experience that just once...
You're a special sperson, you need special doctor...I'll see if I can
get my chiro to email you if that's OK? He's a good guy...I think!..LOL
I'm glad to have met you.
Khepri/Chris <- real name

Khepri,
I would think chiropractic is science, and it should be a team; and
i need a voice too; but they fear me;
yeah, your right in that they always seem to need to protect
themselves from sueing (sp?) but i never sued;
it's like this feeling, i don't go around and steel, but i am
treated as if i am steeling as they are afraid of what i will steel;
after a while it henders any of my ability to communicate;
and as time goes by it builds up in me and then the chalange is is
to relate it to someone, but it's like so much to say; and is it
really understood, as docs seem to be like gods and me my soul is
worth less then a dollor bill on earth;
but i think, and i reason, and i anolyze, and i am not heard due to
fear; i use the steeling thing as an example;
i would get angry at my body, cause it would be so much easier as
when i was pleased with my body before i saw a chiro if it went well
with the chiro, then i can praise him...
it's so easy to praise a person, but it's so hard to share when
theres a problem;
anyways, i am seeking to understand other ways, beside chiros, and
theres this drawing up there in the home page, of that person
sitting, and well, all that words, does any of that adjust or is it
all stretches and breathing....
it seems you trust chiros, even if what they are doing don't feel
right; do you ever start anolyzing what is going on?
also am i understanding correctly that your saying you have what i
have in that the spine is some what curved and twisted so then it
creats numbness?
I use to take care of it myself and now as i have studied, what i
was doing is pressing on the right side, of my back so the left side
can feel, by then the spineous (sp?) prossess (sp?) is then pointing
to the right, cause if they are centered then it causes the
numbness,
so here with out understanding all of this, as i would be in a car,
i would like take my left hand and press on the steering wheel,
while my right hand is pressing on the back of the passenger side,
and while my right side of my back was pressing on the edge of the
drivers seat, all at once as i press, it felt so good on my numb
area of my left side of my back, as it allowed it to feel;
but what i was really doing, now looking back is i was forcing the
spineous prossess to go to the right instead of centered, and that
allowed me to feel; but when i saw a chiro, he disregard of my spin
twisted to the left while spine slightly curved to the right, and he
thought no wrong, spineous prossess shouldn't be to the right, one
must center them, so he took his hands and press on both side of the
back, even; and suddenly numbess;
when i told him, i feel numb on the left side he quickly dismiss me,
as suddenly fear rose in the air; and i felt like some kind of enemy
out there to hurt others; when i am a very kind nice careing person.
so there is the back, how ever as i was able to keep my head stable
before seeing a chiro, the chiro made it where my head was so heavy,
that i had to look to the ground, it would be so hard for me to even
sit and watch tv; so i would live my life lying down...
later due to i had to, i studyied, and learn what happen; some how
as the chiro adjusted my neck he offseted the atlas which is the
first vertabra of the neck;
so as he centered the spineous prosess, that then caused me numbess
on the left side of back, when i would allow me to feel on the right
side, as i would trigger the spineous prosess to go to the right; if
he only did this, i would of just look for a car, and just undo what
he did; but when my atlas was misalign, in making my head so heavy,
i had no clue how to get it where my head would feel stable;
so i was on a chase;
you see about the back, i learn that from a fluke, as i had to reach
for something in the back seat in a hurry as i was behind a red
light, and my back adjusted and i was able to feel, and so i learn
from that; but about the neck, i wasn't learning it from a fluke,
instead, i was like feeling like i lost it;
(excuse useage of words, here, i don't know if that is how one use
the word fluke; still, i am catching up with the hearing world as i
use to be deaf, and now i can hear well; which it confuse me when i
was with chiros, some how i felt as if i was deaf all over again,
and when i was deaf i didn't know many words, and sight and feeling
thoughts with out words, is like being in an invisible prison, as i
couldn't get my needs across; and suddenly i knew feel thought in my
body, but no words for the chiro, plus his hurry ways, made my mind
go blank; i felt as if i was repeating my childhood)
now, so here was the problem, and looking back, if he only wasn't
afraid of me, it could of been resolved so easiely, but no...
instead i had to figure it out, as he would dismiss me and call me
rare;
and it was then, as i was on that chase, i felt as if my soul was
worth less then a dollar bill; and i wanted to leave earth, due to
no one cared, as they all feared me, even though i wasn't sueing;
but of corse i didn't leave earth, instead i kept going through the
trial and started studying on the net about the spine.

That is very common when first being adjusted....sometimes I get so
light-headed I wonder if I'll pass out!
With the body re-aligned, it has to use neural pathways that it is
unaccustomed to giving the strange sensations...they pass with time and
eventually the new alignment "feels" normal....

Perhaps an old injury that heled in the worng wy, but now feels "right"..
The problem arises in it not being "right" and over the years does more
damage than would normally occur...
The body naturally becomes accustomed to these "deformities"..a survival
thing of sorts.....however it may be worse over aa long time
period...decades....
I have the same problem described above...

You want it to "feel" like it used to feel....unfortunately it "feels
right" when it is out of adjustment....
I believe that the discomfort *should* be short term and eventully go
away.....but if you undo it the process must restart time and time
again....you never make any progress.....
It's the double edged sword....

There is always the possibility that they are not good chiropractors..:)
Personally I only go to chiros thathave been in practice at least 15 to
20 years....I like to go with experience...:)
The hardest thing about visitied chiros isnot undoing their work...I am
guilty myself...especially with the neck.....it's a habit I must undo!

question if any of you can relate;
I went to see a chiropractor; yet before i went i was pleased with
my body; but i went due to i wanted to learn...
you see, before seeing a chiro i would adjust myself that worked in
allowing me to feel on the left side of upper back;
but what was sad, is when i went to see chiro, he made my left side
of my upper back numb, and also add me other problems like in
makeing my head heavy, in where it was hard for me to look straight,
as i had to look to the ground;
it led me on a chase, to try to get my body back to how it was
before i ever went;
then in my chase, i met this other chiro who solved the head problem
but then led me to have a different problem in where then my head is
to heavy in where it needs to lean towards my left shoulder;
5 years went by in my chase to try to get my body back, and i felt
like as if everyone was blaming me; like as if only; only if i did
this or that;
then one day, i was talking to people on the elevator, and my
neighbor said, he can adjust my neck;
so we went to a chair, and he did so, and it worked for my neck;
he said he learn it from a masuse (sp?)
also i learn how to get my upper back to how it use to be so then i
can feel on my left side of my back; i figure this myself; i can
explain how if your insterested in more detail.
but all i have left now is my low back, in trying to get that back
to how it was; as one chiro gave me problems in that area;
you would think i would ask my neighbor how to do the lower back,
but suddenly as i ask him, he's afraid of me;
but afraid of what?
chiros are afraid of me; and now he;
why?
all i can think of as my nieghbor isnt' a chiro or a masuse (sp?) is
maybe his friend the masuse told him never to do it again, cause
what if i get hurt? his friend who's a masuse lives to far away for
me to see; i wish though my neighbor would allow me to write to his
friend, maybe i will ask my neighbor if i can.
so any ways, do any of you relate with this; so now i am learning
like exploring in even in this group; reading away, in seeing in how
i can get my lower back back to how it was;
this is hard to write, cause it seems so like, so much to write, yet
is it understood;

Great post...thanks!
I think the connection between intestinal points and the head is
extremely interesting. Makesone wonder if interstinal disturbance leads
to migraine rather than the other way around?...Hmmmmmm.

Migraine Pressure Point by Steve Theunissen
The word "migraine" is derived from a French word meaning
"half a head". This is an appropriate label for this type of
pain because, in most cases, the ache affects only one side of the
head.
In contrast to tension headache, the pain soon becomes throbbing or
pulsating in kind due to its origin mainly in over-distended
arteries outside the skull. There is often a feeling of nausea or
other digestive disturbance, and the pain may be so intense as to
interfere with work and compel the individual to lie down. There may
be more than one in the family who suffer from this kind of
headache, because the tendency to develop migraine is inherited. In
cases of "classical" migraine as opposed to common migraine
an attack may be heralded by a pre-headache warning or "aura,"
such as spots or flashes of light before the eyes.
The Treatment
Conventional treatment is ineffective in treating migraine
headaches. Migraine pressure point treatment, however, will release
congested energy and blood from the head and promote the body's
natural blood flow. Migraine pressure point treatment is a self
treatment that anybody can perform to achieve quick, drug free
results. There four simple steps that need to be followed to
effectively use the migraine pressure point technique.
Step One
Place thumbs on your scalp right above your ears and position your
index fingers on the crown of your head. This is your first migraine
pressure point. Apply pressure to this spot with your index fingers.
Step Two
Place your thumbs on the base of your skull, in the depression
between the muscles. This is your second migraine pressure point.
Apply pressure to this spot
Step Three
Place your index fingers on the middle of your forehead, one above
each eye. This is your third migraine pressure point. Gently apply
pressure in a circular motion.
Step Four
Place your index fingers on the bones at the outer corner of your
eye sockets. This is your fourth migraine pressure point. Apply
pressure to relive pain behind your eyes.
An Expert to Guide You
Brian Carter, MS, LAC, is a world renowned acupuncturist, herbalist
and medical professor. He is also the author of the
bestseller "Powerful Body, Peaceful Mind". We asked Brian
some questions on applying migraine pressure point treatment.
Why is migraine pressure point treatment so effective?
"Pressure points are basically acupuncture points, but instead of
acupuncture, we're using pressure. Both therapies are picked up
by your nervous system and communicate with your brain. Your brain
then changes the way your body is functioning. All this has been
verified with medical research. And migraine is a neurological
condition - it can be much more than just a headache. I know this
personally because I get them. Acupuncture and pressure points are a
neurological way to treat this neurological problem."
How long should you hold each migraine pressure point position?
"You need to really feel the points- they should be a dull achey
feeling, and the longer you massage them, the better. You have to
relax into that dull feeling, which can be rather intense if you
really get the point and press hard. The longer you do it, the more
likely you'll get relief. Try at least a couple minutes per
point."
Are there any other migraine pressure points that we should know
about?
"Yes, you mentioned some good ones. For the second one, which we
call Gallbladder 20, I sometimes use my index finger knuckles
instead. Those are all points on the head, which are what we
call "local" to the site of pain. But we also
use"distal" or far
away points. One well known one (Large Intestine 4) is between your
thumb and index finger, which you can squeeze with your other thumb
and index finger. There's a lot more you can do depending on what
caused the migraine, and how it's manifesting- too much to go
into here!"
I had a roommate that got migraines and we tried a number of feverfew
products without success, but Nature's Plus has one called Migra-Actin
with some magnesium and I think a B vitamin along with bioperine,
standardized feverfew at 1.2% and that one did it for him.

Hi Lena,
Here is a link directly to a tooth chart (with U.S. tooth
numbering). (I don't know anything about the site owner, Dr. Wolf,
but he has the chart available with some other information).

From the chart site you can click on the "Teeth to body

Does anyone know, may I ask, which energy meridians are in the mouth
that would be stimulated by that action of tapping the teeth together?
Much appreciation,
Lena
Feverfew seems to work for a lot of people--not for me, as I seem to have
some kind of allergy to it.
However, there's a lovely book called "A Touch of Healing" by
Alice Burmeister (often found in pretty good used condition on amazon and
elsewhere--for the thrifty-conscious) that offers several gentle touch
methods that WORK (but headaches aren't the only topics).
One of the best for headaches is to have someone hold both big toes,
making sure to have the fingers make contact with both top and bottom of
the big toes. The technique is taken from Jin Shin, which is a very
gentle touch. Some people call it acu-touch, rather than
acu-pressure for that reason.
I know this works because I get some "doozies" of
migraines. In the past, they'd last maybe a couple days, a few
times they've lasted as long as three days. Now, though, I get dear
hubby to hold both big toes, and the headaches subside in minutes.
It can take between 20 and 45 minutes usually--a far cry from the days on
end length of the past.
It might work if you can hold your own toes IF you can also relax while
holding them--but frankly, I'm not relaxed when I hold my own. It
works in a pinch, but it takes longer and it's just not as
effective.
With this dandy technique, there is no need to take anything.

It is the combination of ingredients in the feverfew plant that
brings such effective relief. It works to inhibit the release of two

to contribute to the onset of migraines. By inhibiting these amines

controls inflammation that constricts the blood vessels in the head,
and prevents blood vessel spasms which may contribute to headaches.
Feverfew should be taken regularly to receive maximum benefit and
protection from migraines.
The tea, drunk cold, may also relieve skin perspiration associated
with migraines, and has been used to stimulate appetite, and improve
digestion and kidney function.
Clinical tests have shown the use of feverfew may reduce of

Additional benefits include lower blood pressure, less stomach

Common Use: The herb has historically been used as remedy for

Hi,
I can tell you from my personal experience that I found some relieve
with Feverfew.
This herb has a long history of use in traditional and folk medicine
as a treatment for disorders often controlled by aspirin, such as
fever, headaches and some of the accompanying symptoms such as
nausea and depression.
Recently feverfew has been gaining fame as an effective treatment
for migraine headaches. It may also help ease diseases caused by

controls inflammation that constricts the blood vessels in the head,

Spring arrives Mar. 20, 7:34 A.M. EST with the Sun entering the sign
of Aries. As the earth is tilted so that the sun is directly over
the equator, this signifies the start of the vernal equinox. This
time of spring has been celebrated over the centuries as the
beginning of the rebirth period. The Spring Season is probably one
of the most embraced and most significant of the season changes, for
it denotes the start of new life, regeneration of nature and the
renewal of the spirit.
Spring is good time to take a good look at our health and our
lifestyle. Start by looking at the life around you. Are you living
in chaos? Is your home in a shambles? Is there clutter everywhere?
You may want to consider starting with a good de-cluttering session.
The temple, our physical bodies, is the only thing we have to carry
the soul. When our physical bodies are not in proper working order,
everything around us ultimately suffers. Our good health is all we
have that stands between us and the aging process. The longer you
keep your physical body in optimum health, the longer you have your
temple to keep your soul on this plane. Detoxification is the best
way to keep the body at its most ultimate working level.
DETOX
Detoxification is a process that occurs within our bodies on a
natural and continuous basis. Detoxifying is the process of
releasing accumulated toxins and waste products that build up
throughout our system. From birth, we are bombarded by toxins,
externally from environmental sources. Internally, our organs give
off waste products that accumulate in our body. Imbalanced emotions
also play a part in polluting our system with excess chemicals such
as free radicals, homocysteine and cortisol.
Most often the liver is the target of a cleansing herbal regimen,
since the liver is one of the most important organs in the body. It
processes our hormones, contributes to proper digestion, cleanses
the body of toxins, and many other important duties. A good
cleansing regimen, however, will also cleanse and support other
vital organs, such as heart, kidneys, blood, and digestive system.
It will also do wonderful things for your spirit!
It is vital to consume lots of water, with lemon is ideal, and gets
fresh air to flush these toxins out of your system.
DANDELION ROOT: Dandelion Root can be made into a bitter tea
(don't sweeten it, the bitterness is how it works –
you'll get used to it) as an excellent tonic for the liver and
blood purifier.
Dandelion roots are very high in vitamins and minerals. The common
dandelion is an unusually nutritious food. Its leaves contain
substantial levels of vitamins A, C, D, and B complex as well as
iron, magnesium, zinc, potassium, manganese, copper, choline,
calcium, boron, and silicon. Worldwide, the root of the dandelion
has been used for the treatment of a variety of liver and
gallbladder problems. Other historical uses of the root and leaves
include the treatment of breast diseases, water retention, digestive
problems, joint pain, fever, and skin diseases. The most active
constituents in dandelion appear to be eudesmanolide and
germacranolide, substances unique to this herb.
Water should be a very important part of any detoxification program.
Distilled water is best. 6-8 eight ounce glasses a day.
Glutathione is an important detoxification compound. Vitamin C is
the most cost-effective way of raising Glutathione levels. Take
1,000 mg three times a day.
Taking Silymarin, (70 to 210 mg three times per day) the flavonoid
complex from Milk Thistle is a well-researched way to improve liver
function.
Take 1 to 2 tablespoons of water-soluble fiber supplement at night
before bed. Powdered Psyllium, Seed husks, or Oat Bran is suggested.
Fasting is one of the fastest ways to increase elimination of wastes
and enhance the healing process of the body. Go on a three day fast,
four times per year (fasting at the change of the seasons is a good
rule to remember).
Eating a diet that focuses on fresh vegetables and fruits, whole
grains, legumes, nuts and seeds are extremely important.
Green Whole Foods such as Spirulina, Chlorella, Barley Grass, Wheat
Grass, and Klamath Blue Green Algae are important for detoxing.
These ingredients contain the most powerful combination of nutrients
ever known in any grain, herb or food. They contain almost all of
the vitamins, minerals, proteins and enzymes necessary for the human
diet, plus chlorophyll. These necessities are bio-available which
means that they are easily assimilated throughout the digestive
tract, giving our bodies' instant access to vital nutrients.
Weekend Mono-diet:
This consists of a full weekend of relying on a single food such as
grapes, apples, pears (best choice if you have a history of allergy
problems), brown rice, millet, or even potatoes (boiled only).
Yoga poses can be good alternatives to "traditional" health remedies
because they relax the body and mind, improve circulation and
respiration, reduce tension and help the body through its healing
process.
Yogic Detox:
The Yogic breath exercise can be done without instruction, without
danger, and with a good chance that your discomfort and stressful
feelings will be reduced. Relaxation Breath is the most powerful
tool for stress management.
Sit up, with your back straight in any position.
Place your tongue against the ridge of tissue just behind your upper
front teeth and keep it there throughout the exercise.
Exhale completely through your mouth.
Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental
count of four.
Hold your breath for a count of seven.
Exhale completely through your mouth, to a count of eight.
Repeat this cycle three more times for a total of four breaths.
Try to do this breathing exercise at least twice a day.
You can repeat the whole sequence as often as you wish, but don't do
it more than four breaths at one time for the first month of
practice.
This exercise is fairly intense and has a profound effect on the
nervous system.
Deep Diaphragm Breath:
Sit with your legs crossed in a comfortable position. Breathe slowly
and evenly from your diaphragm, through your nose. Fill your lower
abdomen, lungs, then chest with air. Hold for a four count then
slowly exhale the air out from your chest, lungs, then lower
abdomen. Repeat 3 or 4 times.
That's it! Just allow your shoulders to drop and your face relax as
you breathe, deep.
Not a morning person? These Ayurvedic rituals will turn you into an
early riser and change how you face the day.
By Catherine Guthrie
If that morning mantra "rise and shine" strikes you as the ultimate
oxymoron, you might have something to gain from Ayurveda's approach
to waking up. According to Ayurvedic philosophy, choices that you
make regarding your daily routine either build up resistance to
disease or tear it down. Ayurveda calls for getting a jump-start on
the day by focusing on morning rituals that work to align the body
with nature's rhythms, balance the doshas, and also foster self-
esteem alongside self-discipline. Adopting just one or more of the
following practices for a month can radically alter your experience
of the day. Don't be surprised if you begin to view mornings in a
new light.
Beat the Sun. Roll out of bed at least 20 minutes before sunrise.
Vata energy fills the atmosphere during these pre-dawn hours, and
since vata is known for movement this is the ideal time to rouse
your body. "By waking up before sunrise, you are exposed to the
special energy in the air," says Vaidya Rama Kant Mishra, an
Ayurvedic expert in Colorado Springs, Colorado. "It's a good idea to
wake up, go out, and get that breeze in your body." For when
sunlight illuminates the sky, vata energy is replaced by kapha, or
muscle, energy, explains Michael Sullivan, the director of Riverview
Spa, an Ayurvedic yoga retreat in Buckingham, Virginia. Sunrise
means it is time to get moving. And indeed if you are already up,
the transition will be a snap. Once your feet hit the floor, savor
the stillness by indulging in a brief round of pranayama and Sun
Salutations or by going to the cushion for a short meditation.
Activate Your Innards. The Ayurvedic philosophy believes the first
item you ingest sets the mood for the remainder of the day. With
that thought in mind, drink a glass of lukewarm water flavored with
a fresh slice of lemon or lime. Here, the Ayurvedic reasoning is
twofold. The warm water serves to stimulate the gastrointestinal
tract and peristalsis—the waves of muscle contractions within the
intestinal walls that keep things moving. Secondly, lemons and limes
are high in minerals and vitamins and help loosen ama, or toxins, in
the digestive tract.
Face Value. Sleep is tough on the face. Rinsing your face upon
waking is an easy way to disperse heat, or leftover pitta energy,
and prepare the skin for the day's challenges, namely heat, stress,
and pollution. Thus Mishra recommends splashing the face seven times
with cool, preferably nonchlorinated water. (An auspicious number in
Ayurveda, seven represents the body's chakras, or energy
centers.) "The face is the most exposed area of the body, so morning
rehydration is crucial," he says. "All day the face is bombarded
with stresses. The more hydration the better." Overnight, trapped
heat also dries out the mouth. So while rinsing your face, take a
sip of cool water, swish it slowly, and spit it out when it gets
lukewarm. Repeat two to three times.
Mind Your Mouth. Whereas many of us may dismiss morning tongue-fuzz
as an innocuous by-product of sleep, Ayurveda interprets it as a
sign of undigested ama lurking in the digestive tract. Ayurvedic
practitioners thus rely on the aptly named tongue scraper to
dislodge ama, lest it be reabsorbed while eating or drinking. (Both
plastic and metal tongue scrapers are sold at many health food
stores, but a stainless steel spoon works in a pinch.) Scrape the
tongue gently, working from back to front. Use seven to 14 strokes
to cover the entire area. This not only rids the tongue of ama, but
also unearths the taste buds, awakening the gastric fire for another
day of savoring food.
Then tap the teeth together a few times to stimulate the energy
meridians that lie in the mouth. For healthy gums and enamel, brush
your teeth with a soft nylon or a natural bristle toothbrush. (Using
a hard toothbrush can cause gum recession, pain between the teeth
and gums, and damage enamel.) Use a toothpaste free of synthetic
chemicals and harsh abrasives. Ayurvedic toothpastes contain herbs,
such as neem, lohdra, and kushta, that will help stimulate gums and
protect enamel. After brushing, rinse your mouth for two to three
minutes with warm olive or sesame oil (swish and spit, don't
swallow). "Gargling with warm oil strengthens the teeth, gums, and
jaws as well as protecting the voice," says Amita Banerjee, an
Ayurvedic nutritionist at New York's Ayurvedic Beauty Holistic
Center. Then use the index finger to massage the remaining oil into
the gums with small, counterclockwise motions. A gum massage
stimulates gum tissue, lubricates cells, and cleanses digestive fire.
Be Sense Sensitive. An ear massage is a boon to the entire body.
Begin at the top of the ear and use the thumbs and index fingers to
rub the rim, moving slowly down to the lobe. Then place a few drops
of sesame oil just outside the opening to the ear canal to keep
drying vata energy in check. Ayurveda considers the nose the pathway
to the brain, so Banerjee suggests rubbing up to four drops of
sesame or olive oil just inside the nostril to clean the sinuses and
ensure mental clarity.
Watch Your Peepers. In Ayurveda, eyes are viewed as "the seat of the
fire," meaning they are pitta in nature and overheat easily. So
lightly splashing cool water into opened eyes helps balance the
doshas. If your eyes are extra puffy or irritated, cover them with
either slices of cucumber or cotton balls soaked in aloe vera,
cooled fennel tea, or milk. (Goat's milk is cooler and therefore
preferable, but cow's milk is also fine.) For bloodshot eyes, try
three drops of pure rose water in each eye. Strengthen neglected eye
muscles and stimulate the optic nerve with a few simple eye
movements. Roll the eyes up and down, side to side, and diagonally.
Then rotate them in a clockwise and counterclockwise direction.
Finish by tightly squeezing the eyes shut and then releasing. Do
this several times.
Indulge in a Self-Massage. Massaging one or more energy channels
with aromatic oil floods the mind and body with healing energy.
Start by choosing an aroma that matches your dosha. To balance vata
use ginger, cardamom, or orange; pitta prefers the cool, sweet
scents of sandalwood or lavender; kaphas respond best to eucalyptus,
rosemary, or sage. Place a drop of oil on the ring finger of the
right hand and rub it gently onto the third eye point between your
brows, using small, clockwise circles. Deepen and slow your
inhalation and exhalation as you count 11 full breaths. If you feel
groggy, Mishra suggests stimulating the energy channels between the
head and heart by using light pressure against the temples with the
flat sides of four fingers. Do not push with the fingertips;
instead, press gently on the sides of your head.
Take a Dip. A bath rehydrates the skin and fends off fatigue. All
three doshas benefit from a quick cleansing, but water temperature
varies by constitution. Pittas benefit from cool water, while
lukewarm water is ideal for vatas, and even warmer temperatures are
best for balancing cool-natured kaphas. A core belief of Ayurveda is
that anything put on the skin is eventually assimilated by the body,
so lower the body's toxicity by avoiding products rife with perfumes
and synthetic chemicals, opting instead for Ayurvedic soaps and
shampoos.
Eat Wisely. It's never wise to skip breakfast, cautions Banerjee.
But, you shouldn't overindulge in the morning either. "From sunrise
to 10 a.m. is kapha time, a time for exercising and moving," says
Sullivan. "A light meal won't overload the digestive fire, which
doesn't peak until noon." Begin your day with fruit, vegetable
juice, nonfat yogurt, or grains, like muesli or granola.

CEREMONY OF 8,000 SACRED DRUMS
FOR THE HEALING THE MOTHER EARTH AND ENSURE PEACE AND LIFE
1. Blessing of the Sacred Drums. It will be a great blessing for Traditions
from around the World to be represented by the Drums at the Otomí Ceremonial
Center in Temoaya, State of México, Otomí Native Nation, México, taking part
together in the Grand Ceremony of 8,000 Sacred Drums to cure Mother Earth and
ensure Life and Peace (March 21, 2004) and the International Indigenous
In-Gathering of Sacred Drums (March 18-20, 2004).
2. The Spirit of 8,000 Sacred Drums. The prophecy of the ancestors of the
Otomí Native Nation, the Sacred Civilizatión of Silence, Sound, Time, Space and
Corn (Ñätho-Ñähñu-‘Ñuhmu-‘Ñuhu-Olmecas-Toltecas-Teotihuacanos), is an Awakening
of Indigenous Peoples and of All Humankind. We will come together to make the
Sound of 8,000 Sacred Drums (the number may be 8,000 times 8,000 worldwide) to
enable the Vibration of All the Sacred Drums to generate Mähki ‘Ñithi (Powerful
Sacred Medicine) and Ts’edi Pa (intensified Healing Energy) to Heal Mother
Earth.
The messages from our wise elders (both men and women) also speak to us of the
need to transform drums of war into Drums of Peace and to recognize the
importance of the work for harmony and the peaceful resolution of conflicts
around the world.
To leave a message of Love and Respect for all forms of Life on the planet.
Life with Liberty, Justice, Dignity and Sacred Peace. To recognize that
Everything is Sacred, and that our mission is to work to ensure that our life
is in equilibrium with our families, communities, peoples, humanity, plants,
animals, air, earth, fire, the Cosmos and our own heart.
To present the option of Mother Earth and for Life and Peace as a legacy for
present and future generations.
3. Meeting Place. Notwithstanding the In-Gathering, the idea is that those that
cannot attend, in their thousands or millions, can connect with this Grand
Indigenous Ceremony. This is why, with all the love and respect of our heart,
we are inviting your Family, Group, Council, Collective, Association,
Community, or Native People or Nation of all regions and countries worldwide to
meet at some Sacred Place (a Valley, Desert, Jungle, Island, Lake, Forest,
Mountain, Cave, River, Waterfall, Ceremonial Center, Temple or special Site of
your own, at the Altar in your Home, your Cultural or Educational Center or
some other Meeting Place, such as a Public Square, Garden, or any other space
conducive to a Meeting.
4. Time and Date of Ceremony. The purpose is to join the Sound of the Sacred
Drums for an hour (60 minutes) at 12 noon (local time at every location on the
Planet) on March 21, 2004. Depending on your local capabilities and conditions,
you can begin your activities for one hour or 12 hours any time between dawn
and dusk, or activities may continue all day (for 24 hours).
5. Ways to Connect and Share. You can play and thereby connect with the sound
of the Sacred Drums or other similar percussion instruments. You can also
connect through other musical instruments, dancing and sacred chants; you can
hold a ceremony or rituals; you can meditate or pray in any language. You can
unite the drum of your heart with the drum of all Humankind. May all the power
and sacred medicine of the Sacred Drums come to us, unite us and bring us
together, reconcile us and heal us and bring joy to our hearts.
6. For the Earth, Peace and Life. Every Sister, Brother, Family, Group,
Council, Collective, Association, Community, Native People, Native Nation or
any other Tradition from every area on the planet can have activities before,
during and after the Grand Ceremony of 8,000 Sacred Drums. These activities may
be focused on the defense and respect of Mother Earth (jungles, forests,
ceremonial centers and sacred sites), Peace (for the collective rights of
Indigenous Peoples and of all Traditional Societies worldwide) and Life
(Equilibrium with animal, plant, mineral and human Life. Life is sacred and in
harmony and dignity with all living things).
7. Be in Touch. We ask you to be in communication with us. Let us know how many
Sacred Drums are involved from your home areas; let us know that we are
connecting with every place and region so that we will know about the
ceremonies, meetings, festivals, workshops, meditations, and ceremonial,
cultural and fraternal activities being held around Sacred Drums. May the
shimmering of light bathe us and may healing energy spread among everyone so
that we can feel, experience and share in peace and love at all times.

An Unusual Program for WEIGHT LOSS Using Kundalini Yoga
By Nirvair Singh Khalsa
What you are about to read is a unique weight loss program that I
give to my students. Keep in mind that this program will be very,
very different from any you have ever seen or attempted.
With your permission, we will take a journey. I'm going to ask
you a question. But before I ask it, please do this meditation. Be
patient…don't jump ahead in the article yet. I really want
you to be in a meditative mind before we continue the journey. This
meditation will connect you to your inner Guru (in other words, it
will take you to the place where there is an answer (Ru) in every
question (Gu). In Sanskrit "gu" means darkness or ignorance,
and "ru" means light.
Sit in Easy Pose,* spine straight. Chant the tune-in mantra, Ong
Namo Guru Dev Namo, three times. Now raise the arms out to the
sides, and bend at the elbows so the upper arms are parallel to the
ground and the forearms are perpendicular to the ground. Hands are
in Gyan Mudra* with the index fingers and thumb tips touching
lightly. Eyes closed, concentrate at the Brow Point.* Slowly and
rhythmically chant the mantra Wahe Guru, broken into four syllables:
Wha Hay Gu Roo. Take a deep breath before each repetition of all
four syllables. Continue for 3 to 11 minutes. At the end of the
meditation, lower the arms.
Now, here comes the question.
Ask it out loud, to yourself:"Am I overweight?" No extensive
thinking…just get the quick and immediate answer from deep in
your consciousness…Yes or No.
The reason for embarking on this process is because we are
continuously inundated with information about body image and diet:
Atkins…Jared…fashion industry going up only to size 10 as the
standard…adult onset diabetes…thinner actors and models
selling an impossible norm…my lying bathroom scale… popular
and expensive cosmetic surgeries….Too much information! It has
all
turned into the clash of the ideal and the real. It takes genuine
clarity to acknowledge all the messages and then come to an inner
state of knowing what is right and true for you.
Now…
If your answer is Yes… stay with me here on this page. You're
on the FIRST PATH. If the answer was No… You're on the SECOND
PATH
(Scroll Down)
I have talked with many students about weight loss during my many
years of teaching. It has led me to this conclusion: When there is
not a medically diagnosed physical imbalance, weight gain is as much
about an inner process of life and discovery as it is about what you
eat, how you look, and what you consider an ideal body image. Weight
gain can be about protecting yourself with "extra padding."
Your fat cells are lipids and water. Water is a psychic capacitor.
It holds energy. The protection may be from daily work-related
stress or from current or past emotional trauma that is resurfacing.
It requires you to be patient with yourself: no crash diets, no
daily weighing on the bathroom scale, and a regular sadhana of being
kind to yourself and doing the Kriya for Physical and Emotional
Clearing below.
I also recommend:
Chanting Guru Guru Wahe Guru, Guru Ram Das Guru daily for 11
minutes. There are wonderful versions that you can chant with on
CD's by Snatam Kaur, Singh Kaur, Sada Sat Kaur, Gurudass Singh,
and Mata Mandir Singh.
Exercise regularly…daily walking for 20 to 30 minutes is
excellent.
Eat a normal, healthy, and balanced diet: 10 to 20
percent of your calories coming from fat, 10 to 20 percent coming
from protein, and the rest coming from vegetables, fruit, and
complex carbohydrates.
Drink plenty of pure water as well. This is especially important if
you are doing a higher protein diet, which may be hard on the
kidneys. As a general rule of thumb, drink one half your body weight
in ounces of water a day.
Yoga works on many levels. For optimal health, you need to move
food, emotions, and life circumstances through your system in a
timely way. If you are stuck, this series can re-establish flow and,
as a result, bring you more energy and vitality. Sitting in Easy
Pose, with the spine straight, chant the tune-in mantra Ong Namo
Guru Dev Namo three times.
High Knee-Lift Walk. Come standing. Keep the back straight as you
inhale and lift the left knee up high and as close to the chest as
possible. Exhale and lower the knee down. Inhale and lift the right
knee up high and as close to the chest as possible, exhale and lower
the knee down. Continue marching in place. Keep the arms relaxed at
the sides. (3 minutes)
Diaphragm Lifts. Remain standing. Bend forward and place the hands
on the knees. Bend the knees slightly. Inhale and then exhale.
Holding the breath out, pull up on the diaphragm (by making a
concave area under the rib cage) and then release the diaphragm
several times in a row, in a very steady rhythmic movement. Inhale
when needed, then exhale and hold the breath out and continue. (3
minutes)
Pelvic Grind Left. Sitting in Easy Pose, place your hands on your
knees and begin grinding yourself in a big smooth circle, going to
the left. Lift the chest up high as you come forward, and let the
chest collapse and the pelvis tilt backwards as you go back. Keep
the chin level (parallel) to the ground in both positions. Breathe
normally. (90 seconds)
Pelvic Grind Right. Repeat exercise 3, grinding to the right. (90
seconds)
Wide Leg Stretch Left. Stretch both legs straight out in front of
you and then separate the legs until they are wide apart. Bring the
torso upright and turn it to the left. Stretch forward and down over
the left leg. Hold on to your shin, ankle, or foot with both hands.
Keep the spine straight, the head in line with the spine. Stretch
until you feel gently challenged. Hold it steady, no bouncing. Long
Deep Breathing.*(2 minutes)
Wide Leg Stretch Right. Repeat exercise 5 to the right side. (2
minutes)
Short Relaxation. Come out of this position and rest on your back.
Lie down flat, have the arms by the sides with the palms up, the
eyes gently closed, and the breath soft and normal. Have the knees
up slightly for comfort, if needed. (1 minute)
Leg Thrusts. Remain on the back, with arms by the sides and turn the
palms face down. Bring both knees to the chest. Alternately
straighten the legs in a thrusting motion with the toes pointed.
Keep the feet twelve to eighteen inches off the ground. Place the
hands under the hips for support, if needed. Powerful Deep Breaths.
(1 minute)
Short Relaxation. Come out of this position and rest on your back.
Lie down flat, have the arms by the sides with the palms up and the
eyes gently closed. Breathe softly and normally. Have the knees up
slightly for comfort, if needed. (1 minute)
Bow Pose. Roll over onto your stomach. Reach back and catch the tops
of the feet or the ankles with the hands. Push out with the shins
and pull in with the arms, keeping the elbows straight. Lift the
chest off the ground, and if you are able, also lift the thighs off
the ground. The head is up and back. Now, if possible, begin rocking
like a rocking horse with Breath of Fire.* (90 seconds)
Baby Pose with Dragon Tail. Come into Rock Pose* and place the
forehead on the ground. The arms are by the sides, hands next to the
ankles, with the palms up. In this position begin moving the hips as
though you had a big heavy dragon's tail. Slowly move the hips
from side to side. Breathe normally. (2 minutes)
Cooling Relaxing Breath (Sitalee Pranayam). Sit in a comfortable
crosslegged position, place the hands in Gyan Mudra* at the knees,
and stick out your tongue. Make a tunnel (or a taco) out of your
tongue and begin to inhale very slowly and deeply through the rolled
tongue and to exhale equally slowly through the nose. Breathe slowly
and deeply. (4 minutes)
Weight Loss…No
If your inner answer was "No," you're on the SECOND PATH.
I know this may have been a surprise to you. Honestly, I think that
most of you reading this article really belong on this page! All you
really need to do is stabilize your weight.
Exercise regularly: daily walking for 20 minutes to 30 minutes is
excellent.
Eat a normal, healthy, and balanced diet: 10 to 20 percent of your
calories coming from fat, 10 to 20 percent coming from protein, and
the rest coming from vegetables, fruit, and complex carbohydrates.
Drink plenty of pure water as well: as a general rule of thumb, one
half your body weight, in ounces of water a day.
This series of exercises is for sun energy. This set will help you
to be warm, energetic, enthusiastic, and outgoing. It should also
help to stabilize your weight.
Chant the tune-in mantra, "Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo", three times.
Right Nostril Breath. Come sitting up in Easy Pose* with the lower
back tucked in, the chest high, and the chin level (parallel) to the
ground and slightly tucked in. Raise the left hand and, using your
thumb, block off the left nostril. Long Slow Deep Breathing* through
the right nostril. (3 minutes)
Sat Kriya. Sit in Rock Pose (Vajrasana).* You may sit in Easy Pose
if Rock Pose is not possible. Arms are held up overhead with the
upper arms hugging the ears. Fingers are clasped together with the
index fingers pointing straight up and palms touching. Recite the
word Sat as you pull the Navel Point in and up. Recite the word Naam
as you relax the Navel Point. Let the breath regulate itself. The
eyes are closed and focused at the Brow Point.* Continue for 3
minutes.
Then inhale, hold the breath, apply mulbandh.* Imagine your
energy radiating out from the Navel Point and circulating throughout
the body for a few seconds. Relax. Rest. Remain in Rock Pose if
possible. Rest, keeping the eyes and concentration at the Brow
Point. Breathe normally. (1 minute)
Sat Kriya. Repeat exercise 2 for 3 minutes, but at the end inhale,
hold the breath, apply mulbandh, and mentally draw all the energy to
the top of the fingertips for a few seconds. Relax. Rest. Remain in
Rock Pose if possible, and rest, keeping the eyes and concentration
at the Brow Point. Breathe normally. (1 minute)
Basic Spine Flex with Root Lock. Place the hands on the shins right
above the ankles. Grasp the shins firmly and inhale through the nose
as you lift the chest up high and tilt the pelvis forward. Now
exhale through the nose, collapse the chest, and gently tilt the
pelvis the opposite way as you briefly apply Root Lock.* Release
Root Lock and inhale up. Exhale back and apply Root Lock. Continue.
Remember to lift the chest up high on each inhale and keep the chin
level to the ground in both positions. As you inhale, mentally chant
Sat. As you exhale, mentally chant Nam. Keep it smooth, without
jerking the body. (3 minutes)
Frog Pose. Slowly stand up and place the feet close together with
the heels touching and the feet out at an angle. Squat down on the
tiptoes with the fingertips on the ground in between the legs. Knees
are wide apart and heels remain together. Head is up.
Inhale and straighten the legs, staying on the tiptoes and keeping
the fingertips on the ground. Bring the chin to the chest. Exhale
down into the original position. Heels remain together and off the
floor for the entire exercise (modified Frog Pose). Continue for 26
repetitions. (You can shorten the duration of an exercise if
necessary, but do not increase it.)
Head Turns. Come into Rock Pose. Catch your breath for a moment.
Fold the hands in the lap and begin turning the head. Inhale slowly
as you turn the head to the left keeping the chin level to the
ground, exhale slowly as you turn the head to the right keeping the
chin level to the ground. Long Slow Deep Breath. (3 minutes)
Torso Bends. Remain sitting in Rock Pose* and bring the hands on to
the shoulders with the fingers in front and thumbs in back. You may
sit in Easy Pose if necessary. Without twisting, inhale as you bend
left, and exhale as you bend right (like a pendulum). Long Slow Deep
Breath. (3 minutes)
Slow Meditative Breath. Come out of this position and sit
comfortably in Easy Pose. Have the hands folded in the lap or in
Gyan Mudra* at the knees. Keeping a very firm concentration at the
Brow Point, and applying a very light Root Lock, begin long slow
deep breathing. On the inhale think Sat and on the exhale think Nam.
(6 minutes)
Deep Relaxation. Come out of this position and rest on your back.
Lie down flat, have the arms by the sides with the palms up, the
eyes gently closed, and the breath soft and normal. Have the knees
up slightly for comfort, if needed. (7 to 11 minutes)

Fwd: *~Spiritually Speaking~* Call From The Mayan Elders
A CALL FROM THE MAYAN ELDERS TO THE HUMAN RACE
By Carlos Barrios
" The light is within us; let us work for our destiny-our destiny to better
the human race. Let us become more aware of our actions; let us be more
compassionate to our fellow human begins and to ourselves." This is a call
for us to listen to our Mayan Elders.
Don Pascual (a Mayan elder) would tell me "we are living in the time of the
Prophecy, a difficult time." Don Pascual was a member of the Clan de Aguila
(The Eagle Clan) my mentor, and my spiritual guide and was one of the
greatest wise men. Don Pascual belonged to one of the oldest organizations
in the Mayan World, believed be over thousand years old. Not only did they
preserve the pure magic and mystic of the ancestral world back then, but the
same tradition has been preserved and is still being followed to this day.
Don Pascual was a Chimam (Aj'qij), a wise Shaman, belonging to the nation
of the MAM (the oldest people) located in Huehuetenengo, Guatemala.
Don Pascual would tell me the following message: "the convergence of the
Great Cycle has come back to the visionaries, not only in our traditions but
also, other traditional tribes. In this Epic time that we are living, we
will be seeing and experiencing destruction, confrontations, intolerance,
irrationality, religious radicals, wars. There will be diseases that we have
not seen or known, plagues, floods, earthquakes, droughts, hurricanes, and
Mother Earth will grow hotter. And the saddest thing is that we see all of
what is happening around us and we will be passive, doing nothing, because
we are so involved with our daily lives and our material needs that we will
take things for granted. If we would stop and listen to Mother Earth, we
would recognize that she is protesting and telling us to pay attention to
her needs that we, as the human race, have taken for granted. She is saying
that we have also been irresponsible, causing contamination and not
stopping the destruction.
How you ask? We are accomplices for letting a few unscrupulous
humans destroy hundreds hectares of forest everyday, factories that
contaminate the atmosphere and for what? To consume those products
that in reality we do not need nor want. But it is offered to us to make our
lives easier and happier. With this we only show the unconscious actions and
our passive attitude we have because we are programmed to live our lives in
the most comfortable way without thinking what we are doing to our Mother
Earth. If we do not stop what we are doing and change our attitude and be
more conscious we can only wait and see what our Mother Earth will unleash,
as she will started correcting all the error that we have done to her. And
that is how the end of the cycle will commence, and that is how part of
humanity will disappear. But we still have time. We do not see the
disposition, the consciousness, the unity. We only see the madness,
consumerism, illegal drugs, alienation and big egos. Not caring what we are
doing to our Mother Earth. We must be more conscious before it is to late."
My teacher Don Pascual told these wise and prophet words to me in 1997.
(Ref. KAM WUJ El Libro del Destino, Carlos Barrios. L. Squirru Ed.
Sudamericana, 1999).
I could only remember his look, gazing to the distance and looking into the
future. I remembered the fog around us and the Cuchumatanes Mountains in
thehorizon.
I want to believe that we are still in time!
Several days ago, I received a call from the Elders, the heirs of Don
Pascual, from the Eagle Clan. They are always courteous when they call, but
this time I noticed a serious tone at the other end of the line. "We have
been trying to get in touch with you, since December. We are concerned with
what is happening to our Mother Earth." Since they have always been direct
to the point, they started telling me that the Mother Earth is in despair,
unleashing her furor at us, sending us Hurricanes, Droughts, and just
recently the Earthquake followed by the Tsunami that provoked floods, and
killing our fellow brothers and sisters in Asia and Africa. But according to
the Elders this is only the beginning of what is to come. In the five
Continents there will be floods and earthquakes. In our country we have
already three volcanoes erupt. In Mexico, the Popocapetel is also active. In
the Western Coast of the United States, as well in parts of Europe, it has
been raining non-stop and causing floods. We must remember that
Guatemala is the Torch of Light and our call and our message to all of our
Brothers and Sisters is that we need your help. We have already begun
performing ceremonies since December.
But that is not enough. We need the help of our Brothers and Sisters in
order to continue our mission. We need to perform at least a Thousand
ceremonies, but the ideal would be Two Thousand Six Hundred. We would
appreciated it if everyone would donate ten dollars in order to buy material
to keep on doing our ceremonies and to give thanks to our Mother Earth for
what we have. That is why I am coming to you to give you the message of
what the Elders told me the other day. And tomorrow the 18 January, which is
an important day in the Mayan Calendar (Chol'qij) 9 Keme, which means the
change in cycle and to give away to the bad energy, we will be doing a
ceremony tomorrow along with the Shaman's of the Amazon and the Andes.
The Elders are asking all of you to please light a fire, light a candle, to
meditate, anything that comes with in you and this must be done before
sunset or during sunset. And not during the night, for we are trying to
eliminate the dark. On this day we will commence our ceremonies and
meditations and will be focusing on our Mother Earth to ask her for her
forgiveness and for her to guide us with her light so we can unite our
energies and transmit love and positive force to our friends and invite
everyone to join our cause to change our destiny. From this day forward
until July 18 (8 Kiej which is the day that the Mother Earth opens her heart
to us and connects with the hand of God). So, it is important that everyday
before sunset we make our fire ceremonies, light candle, meditation, etc.
The most important days for the celebration are: January 18; February 12,
which is the Mayan New Year; And the 18th of July. The Elders are also
inviting anyone who is interested to come to Guatemala before the 12th of
February. That day (8 Baatz) is the New Year in the Cholq'ij Calendar and we
will be celebrating our New Year with ceremonies. And also on the 18th of
July we would like to invite everyone to come and join us for the last
ceremony which will be in the sacred ceremonial center of Tikal

Jhana Sources
Hello my good friends who follow a contemplative life, I thought you might
like to have some resources for the meditative absorption states. Within a
Southern (Nikayan) Buddhist context the meditative absorptions are known as
Jhana, this however does not mean that these subjective states are any
different from what Christian mystics, like Teresa of Avila, called the
religious ecstasies. In fact one will find every contemplative tradition
has some context for these states.
The current issue of Tricycle (Winter 2004) has a special section titled
'The Jhanas: Perfecting States of Concentration'.
Articles and contents are:

The meditation below is the perfect technique for ushering in the
New Year and to practice in 2005.
Sit with a straight spine. Inhale in 4 sniffs as you turn your head
left, right, left, right. Bring head center and in a monotone chant
(1 beat per word) Guru Guru Wha Hay Guru Ram Das Guru (chant this
twice before you inhale again left, right, left, right). The hands
are in prayer pose at sternum level away from the body. Thumbs
pulled away from the other fingers. Elbows gently hug the ribs. Eyes
are 1/10th open looking down towards the tip of the nose. The ideal
time for this is 11-31 min.
2005 is a 7 year(Radiance). This meditation, according to yoga,
brings white light into your aura and will engender miracles of
healing and grace, for you and through you. Mantras are coded sounds
with unique vibratory effects. When you align yourself with these
exalted frequencies the Universe quickens on your behalf and for all
beings.
Know the Unknown and see the unseen (time open). Inhale, hold the
breath and feel part of everything. Let the breath go and utter the
word Wha! (ecstasy).
Spiritual practices such as these are not forms of escapism but
serve as a constant reminder that we are the embodiment of boundless
possibilities. This is an example of how tension paves the way for
Freedom and sustained focus is a door to expanded vision. Kundalini
Yoga stems from the Tantric tradition which honors the dance of
polarities. Everything is contained in this dance. May your life be
a perfect balance of celebration and discipline and may many
blessings abound, for you and through you! Sat Nam
With regular practice, this meditation will guide you toward a
better relationship with yourself, those you are close to, and the
world around you.
Loving Your Enemies Meditation
This meditation will take anywhere from five to 20 minutes, or even
longer if you wish. The important thing is to be comfortable with
it. You don't really need to time yourself. However, we recommend
staying in Stages 1 and 2 for one to two minutes each; in Stage 3
for three to five minutes; and in Stage 4 for five to 15 minutes.
1. Get into a comfortable, seated position, either in a chair with
your legs uncrossed, or on the floor. Adjust your posture so that
your spine is upright, yet your body feels relaxed. Rest your hands
in your lap or on your thighs, with the palms facing up or down.
2. Close your eyes and bring your attention to your breathing. Take
a few conscious and deep abdominal breaths. Let your exhalations
carry out any tension or anxiety you're feeling now, and use them
throughout your meditation to expel any tension or anxiety that
comes up.
If it is helpful, you may use the previously recommended
affirmations—"I am" on the in-breath and "calm and relaxed" on
the
out-breath—to center yourself during this practice.
3. Bring your awareness to your heart. Allow your breaths to massage
this area. Notice any specific feelings or thoughts you may have
about yourself, people you know, or any particular event. Cultivate
a detached and nonjudgmental attitude to anything that comes up for
you.
4. Continue to focus on the heart area while doing the following:
* Cultivate a friendly and accepting attitude toward yourself and
your friends.
* Develop feelings of compassion and understanding for all those who
suffer.
* Be joyful in your thoughts about a particular person who's
important to you or a saint or guru you hold in high esteem.
* Maintain feelings of indifference and equanimity to anyone who has
harmed you or anyone else. Don't get sucked into their mean-
spiritedness or harmful deeds.
5. To complete your meditation, take three to five deep abdominal
breaths. Open your eyes and slowly get up.
Allow the focus of this meditation to be the fourfold stages of
opening your heart in order to clear your mind. Realize, however,
that it also incorporates other elements common to all forms of
meditation: choosing a stable and comfortable position, awareness of
breath, use of affirmation, and imagery. It's all right if only one
of the stages dominates the meditation. For example, you may be
drawn to the concern for a friend who is in pain, or you may want to
focus on the life's work of someone who inspires you. No better
advice can be given here than to—literally—listen to your
heart!
Vibrations created from chanting Om can help clear your sinuses and
ward off infections.
By Alisa Bauman
Yogis have traditionally chanted the mantra "Om" to help with
focusing the mind. However, this simple and most pri-mal of chants
may serve an important side benefit, particularly during winter
months: The sound vibrations may help keep your sinuses healthy.
This news comes from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden,
where the researchers Jon Lundberg and Eddie Weitzberg discovered
that humming can help to ventilate and open the sinuses. When they
tested 10 men, they found that humming increased nitric oxide levels
fifteenfold, compared to quiet exhalations without sound. The
exhalations of people with healthy sinuses tend to have high nitric
oxide levels, indicating that more air is able to flow between the
sinuses and the nose.
The two researchers defined humming simply as exhaling with sound
while the mouth is closed; they say that chanting "Om" produces the
same effects. Chanting and humming both create sound vibrations,
which encourage air to move back and forth between your sinus
membranes and nasal passages. This air movement then opens tiny
ducts, or ostia, that connect your nose to your sinuses, allowing
your sinuses to drain properly.
Your sinuses consist of four pairs of air-filled cavities behind and
around your nose and your eyes. They filter the air you breathe,
keeping germs from getting into your lungs. To combat germs, such as
the viruses that cause the common cold, your sinus membranes swell.
Sometimes in response to these germs your sinuses can swell so that
the ostia become blocked. Once these are blocked, the mucus cannot
drain properly. Bacteria begin to breed inside the sinuses, causing
a condition which is known as sinusitis.
Sinusitis affects approximately 37 million Americans each year;
numbers are climbing in step with air pollution and antibiotic
resistance. Common symptoms include facial pain and colored nasal
discharge. Once you develop a case of sinusitis, you usually require
antibiotics to cure it. However, daily humming or "Om" chanting may
prevent such an infection from actually taking hold, according to
Lundberg, associate professor of physiology and pharmacology at
Karolinska Institute.
"It is logical that daily periods of humming would be beneficial,"
he says. "The sinuses are effectively ventilated by humming.
Previous research shows that poor sinus ventilation increases the
risk for sinusitis."
In addition to daily chanting, you can also use a humidifier, as
warm, moist air helps to lubricate your nasal and sinus passages and
to thin mucus secretions. Many practitioners of Ayurveda also
partake in a daily saline nasal washing using a neti pot to clean
their nasal passages.
