Migraine Pressure Point by Steve Theunissen
The word "migraine" is derived from a French word meaning
"half a head". This is an appropriate label for this type of
pain because, in most cases, the ache affects only one side of the
head.
In contrast to tension headache, the pain soon becomes throbbing or
pulsating in kind due to its origin mainly in over-distended
arteries outside the skull. There is often a feeling of nausea or
other digestive disturbance, and the pain may be so intense as to
interfere with work and compel the individual to lie down. There may
be more than one in the family who suffer from this kind of
headache, because the tendency to develop migraine is inherited. In
cases of "classical" migraine as opposed to common migraine
an attack may be heralded by a pre-headache warning or "aura,"
such as spots or flashes of light before the eyes.
The Treatment
Conventional treatment is ineffective in treating migraine
headaches. Migraine pressure point treatment, however, will release
congested energy and blood from the head and promote the body's
natural blood flow. Migraine pressure point treatment is a self
treatment that anybody can perform to achieve quick, drug free
results. There four simple steps that need to be followed to
effectively use the migraine pressure point technique.
Step One
Place thumbs on your scalp right above your ears and position your
index fingers on the crown of your head. This is your first migraine
pressure point. Apply pressure to this spot with your index fingers.
Step Two
Place your thumbs on the base of your skull, in the depression
between the muscles. This is your second migraine pressure point.
Apply pressure to this spot
Step Three
Place your index fingers on the middle of your forehead, one above
each eye. This is your third migraine pressure point. Gently apply
pressure in a circular motion.
Step Four
Place your index fingers on the bones at the outer corner of your
eye sockets. This is your fourth migraine pressure point. Apply
pressure to relive pain behind your eyes.
An Expert to Guide You
Brian Carter, MS, LAC, is a world renowned acupuncturist, herbalist
and medical professor. He is also the author of the
bestseller "Powerful Body, Peaceful Mind". We asked Brian
some questions on applying migraine pressure point treatment.
Why is migraine pressure point treatment so effective?
"Pressure points are basically acupuncture points, but instead of
acupuncture, we're using pressure. Both therapies are picked up
by your nervous system and communicate with your brain. Your brain
then changes the way your body is functioning. All this has been
verified with medical research. And migraine is a neurological
condition - it can be much more than just a headache. I know this
personally because I get them. Acupuncture and pressure points are a
neurological way to treat this neurological problem."
How long should you hold each migraine pressure point position?
"You need to really feel the points- they should be a dull achey
feeling, and the longer you massage them, the better. You have to
relax into that dull feeling, which can be rather intense if you
really get the point and press hard. The longer you do it, the more
likely you'll get relief. Try at least a couple minutes per
point."
Are there any other migraine pressure points that we should know
about?
"Yes, you mentioned some good ones. For the second one, which we
call Gallbladder 20, I sometimes use my index finger knuckles
instead. Those are all points on the head, which are what we
call "local" to the site of pain. But we also
use"distal" or far
away points. One well known one (Large Intestine 4) is between your
thumb and index finger, which you can squeeze with your other thumb
and index finger. There's a lot more you can do depending on what
caused the migraine, and how it's manifesting- too much to go
into here!"
