Hello, Ming

Thank you. The nit pick is no problem.  I am glad that you like the site. I am looking forward to talking to you about the site and various other chi kung technique. You will find that I am well learned and don't mind learning more. I have traveled the world and have been fortunate enough to sit and learn from people both here in the west and the east that rarely teach what they know. Many of these techniques I would love talk about with you. Because honestly. It is kinda lonely not being able to validate what you know amongst others that know what they know. If you get what I mean. That is the whole reason why the site was develop. Please contact me at any time. I can be reached by im on yahoo. Just type kevindockery and Im me. Let me know when you have registered your free account so that I can upgraded it on me. Your comments has made me happy. Putting the site together was years of hard work. And work is still being done to it on a daily basis.

Great site!  Just one minor nit-picky detail:  I would change the spelling of "jieng" to just "jing".  Otherwise, the introduction is simple and excellent.  It has some really useful guides for qigong practitioners of all schools to follow.  This is going to be one of the best reference sites for qigong.

Hi Yvonne,

Did the references you mentioned (‘Shapiro (1992)’ as cited by Perez-De-Albeniz & Holmes (2000)) describe in detail the meditation techniques that were used by the patients who suffered "relaxation-induced anxiety and panic" and/or other symptoms as a result of meditations?  Can you give me the title of these articles and the name of the journal in which these articles were published?  Your assistance is much appreciated.

Sincerely,

Ming H. Lee, MPH, L.Ac.

The adverse effects were relaxation-induced anxiety and panic; paradoxical increases in tensions; less motivation in life; boredom; pain; impaired reality testing; confusion and disorientation; feeling ‘spaced out’; depression; increased negativity; being more judgmental and feeling addicted to meditation.  Furthermore, there are reports of more serious adverse effects such as uncomfortable kinaesthetic sensations, psychosis-like symptoms, grandiosity, elation, destructive behaviors and suicidal feelings. I have heard that Qigong practice can help people with suicidal thoughts; however, Qigong and other meditation may have serious side effects. According to ‘Shapiro (1992)’ as cited by Perez-De-Albeniz & Holmes (2000), 62.9% of the subjects reported adverse effects during or after meditation after with the length of practice from 16 to 105 months. The following is just my personal opinion from my past experiences.  For qigong to be an effective and beneficial health exercise, the person who practices it must possess above all a sound mind.  Not necessarily an intelligent mind, but a mind that is alert and clear.  The problem with patients who are suffering from mental disorders is that they often lack the above criteria for qigong to be an effective treatment or benefit.  For the average person, qigong is beneficial to one's health and spiritual development if it is done correctly.  However, for patients suffering from mental disorders, it's more likely that qigong will do more harm than good, because they lack the mental acuity necessary to direct the energy to where it suppose to be.  As for treatment options, I believe these patients have better chances with acupunture and/or herbal medicine.

I would like to think that qigong can benefit patients of mental disorder, but I think in cases like these the risks greatly overshadows the benefits even if the patient works closely with a qualified and talented qigong master.  This is also a topic I am concerned about, and I would also like to know more if there are qigong masters who will offer greater insight into this problem.

Dear Everyone!

I have a "cloudy problem". Since my early age I see light clouds, flying
Grey splashes (better to say).
When I turn my eyes to the right just the movement is followed with a little
gray could army and they are
slowing down. When I turn my eyes to the left, the same happens, they speed
up and slow down again after I stop moving my eyes.
They are not fixed, rather swimming somewhere inside. When I way 8 or
something I had only one gray splash, (called "witchy",)
but my lenses became too crowded. This problem gets more and more annoying
as years pass by, now I feel very frustrated.
I can not even estimate if there are more clouds in my eye, or I am just
getting tired of it.
This could be a some kind of cataract and I am just about seeing a
"never-mention-Bates-to-me" eye doctor,
because here in Hungary I could not find any doctor using Bates Method, just
"Jedi knights" armed with laser blades...

Please could anyone help me if
1) This could be a cataract or that is something else I have never
heard about it?
2) Surgery could be the only solution for cataract or Bates method
can help on this problem
3) If there are any websites, advises related to this problem
4) If there is a specialist (Hungary, Austria, Germany maybe in
England) who could take a look at my eye.
5) If there is anyone who experienced anything similar...
6) Shall I wait, doing Bates exercises or shall I run to a Jedi
knight?

Thank you

I am relatively new to Qigung and TCM. I recently went to an
acupuncturist and was told I have dampness of the spleen. She gave
me a good explanation of this, but I would like more information
from other sources. I have never heard of this in western
medicine. I understand it can be caused by diet. Can someone tell
me what it actually is, maybe in general or western medicine terms
as I am not fully aclimated to TCM yet? What problems can dampness
cause? How to cure it, besides a better diet of course?

Thanks to all

Dear Anna,

Finally I get to go to China.

This weekend I received a telephone call from the national office of
US/China Peoples Friendship Association telling me that I have been selected
to join a 10 person delegation to China May 8-May 21. On April 21-25 the
delegation will meet in Washington DC for a seminar and to discuss plans for
the May trip and our presentations at the scheduled forum.

We pay for our own airfare, but in China we will be hosted by the Chinese
People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC). They
are our Chinese sister organization. We in the US are volunteers they are a
semi government organization.

We will meet with other China friendship organizations from Australia, New
Zealand, and Canada.
The combined delegation will attend a one-day forum in Chongqing along with
representatives of four China provinces. From there we will go to Tibet for
four nights and then to Beijing for a big celebration of CPAFFC's, 50th
anniversary. I am very excited about the trip especially since I will meet
with our counterparts from other countries, Chinese delegates I have hosted
in NYC, and also it has been 14 years since I visited Tibet.

Will keep you posted.
Best regards to all.
In friendship,

I would like to share my impressions from the fantastic results that
the wuwei qigong practitioners have achieved.
The data is objectivized by the computer diagnostics, which I am
using in my research. The medical equipment is licensed Japanese
method and consists in the following:
Because every meridian in the body is connected with the
corresponding inner organ according to the values of the bioenergy,
flowing throgh it, information is obtained about the energetic state of
the organs and the respective disbalance in their functions,
interpreted in medical language.
There is no other electronic test, which only within the frames of
8-10 minutes can give complete picture of the work of the whole body:
the 12 main organs and systems, plus metabolism, central and vegetative
nervous systems, immune system, etc. There is not any irradiation and
the method is absolutely harmless.
it makes an impression that there are separate individuals who are
endowed by Nature with a higher quantity of Energy, while the majority
of the people imperceptibly have closed part of their energy system, if
they live in the used ordinary way, in which more energy is depleted,
but little is supplied.
Here come the place iof Qigong - with the meditation and the physical
exersices. From one side is achieved an increase of the bioenergy (qi)
in the body, and from another side - clearing off the blockages on the
meridians and achieviing of its even distribution in the body.
Thanks to Qigong, the energy is increased and it is circulated and
distributed in all parts of the body.
I will like to share with you some results, achieved by people, who
have resolved serious health problems by everyday pracvtice of the
quiet and physical exersices of the method Wuwei Qigong.

Hristo Hristov, 65, engineer. He practices Wuwei qigong since
three and a half years. Additionaly, he induce acupressure on the foot
acupoints everyday. Thanks to his consistency, he has long since
parted with his stenocardia, which has been the reason why he became
interested in d-r Wang's qigong courses. He has as well resolved a
serious problem with his eyes - bilateral episcleritis. Now he feels
himself brisk and energetic. The skin of his face has improved its
turgor and recovered its natural color.

Tatiana Vlashka, 43, economist. She is practicing Wuwei Qigong
since 5 years. She has affected upon her migraine - after several
monthos of wuwei meditations and exercises, the migraine has
disappeared completely. In the samwe way she has resolved the problems
with gastritis and her depression.

A young woman, 28, which periodically, in 2-3 months, visits my
office. Her first test has registered a strongly manifested energy
deficiency with marked energy disbalance in 80% (the most) of her inner
organs and systems - quite chaotical functionning. Several months
later, the second test showed a sensible increase of the energy index
with 8 units and improvement of the energy balance. In the third test,
the energy index was completely normalized and there was seen an even
flow of energy in 90% of the organs.
Her leading problem was the highly manifested insufficiency in the
function of the immune and endocrine system, which for the period of 10
months she succeeded to replenish and drive in to the norm.
Another effect, which she herself render an account of, is that she
has become much more calm and even-tempered and now it is quite
difficult to bring her off balance, as contrasted with before, when she
has been easily irritable, tense and anxious.
Her three diagnostic tests are a proof that one can regulate one's
energy index and the condition of the vegitative and central nervous
system, and this is achieved with Wuwei Qigong, the disturbances in the
work of the organs and the systems fade away, and with this - the
corresponding diseases as well.

The results could be accelerated if there additionaly is made a
personal comprehensive programme, which includes nutrition, herbal
therapy, cleansin away the toxins from the body, utilization of
bioenergy applicators, working on definite points for acupressure,
using the healing power of positive thinking, etc.

Hello,

In regard to the fact that this week Mars is closest to Earth since
60 000 years and more (the last time it was in 57617 BC), here are
some points, related to qigong and Chinese medicine:

In Chinese, Mars is called "the Fire Planet", as it corresponds to
the fire element. In the ancient astrological treatises it is
written that the main property of Mars is to cleanse away the evil
forces and make justice for those who have violated the natural
laws. Its energy is very purifying for everyone.
For some people Mars will play a definitely positive role, while
for others - not so good. Why is this? It is
important to know what element (wood, fire, earth, metal or water) is
represented in one's heavenly stem of the birthday. For example, for
those who have wood, earth or fire element, Mars will have the most
beneficial effect, because according to the Teaching of the Five
Elements and the Cycle of Generation of the Elements, the wood
generates fire, fire generates earth, and so on. These elements are
in harmony with the fire energy of Mars.
From another point of view, the Mars' influence will be most
unfavorable to the peoples with metal element (the metal as their
heavenly stem in their day of birth). It is logical: according to
the Cycle of Destruction of the Elements, the fire destroys
(controls) the metal. Of course, these destructive force of Mars'
fire energy will not be so forcefull if in one's horoscope there is
at least one water element (the water controls the action of the
fire).
One more thing: as fire destroys the metal, and the metal
corresponds to the lungs and the large intestine, we can expect
increase of respiratory and intestinal diseases this Fall (dominated
by the metal element), and also in the recent few years.

Perhaps, most of you have already felt how intense is the energy in
the air and in the ody. Some people mention that they are feeling
much more refreshed and revitalized, some say that they sleep less
than usually. We should not forget that Mars has a Yang energy, and
thus it activates the Yang energy in the body. Let's take this rare
chance to get some pure Yang energy from Mars - especially in the
evening and night hours you can mentally connect with Mars and
meditate. It does not matter what is your personal element - Mars
will enrich you with new components in your energy and will give you
even more powers and vitality.

HOW TO GUARD AGAINST SARS AND OTHER EPIDEMICS

d-r Wang Jianjun,
Hanlin Academy

Recently in Asia and some other regions in the world appeared a new
epidemic disease - the so called atypical pneumonia or SARS (severe
acute respiratory syndrom).

The main symptoms are fever greater than 100.4°F (>38.0°C), headache,
an overall feeling of discomfort, and body aches.

The appearance of this infectious disease is not a separate
phenomenon, but depends on the changes, which set in nature under given
circumstances.

The SARS is a temporary phenomenon. We know that in the past, in the
world history there have had appeared different kinds of epidemics -
plague, cholera, typhus, and others, which the humankind has overcame.
However, this does not mean that in the future there will not come
other, new epidemic diseases.

That is why, it is of great importance to have proper mental
preparation and knowledge on the main ways of prevention.

One of the leading principles in Chinese medicine is "to treat the
future disease" (zhi wei bing). This means to know how to guard
ourselves against possible outbreak of diseases in the future. The
best treatment is prevention.

2500 years ago, in the reknown medical treatise "Huang Di Nei Jing",
it is pointed out: "Taking medicinal herbs only when you are ill is
like digging a well when you are thirsty; is not it too late?!"

Prevention does not consist only in using outer methods for increasing
hygiene, such as the frequent washing of hands, the use of
desinfectants on the premises, etc. Of course, they also play an
important role for stopping the spread of the viruses and against
contamination, but they do not mean all. It came clear that the virus
of SARS can spread even through the air. How, then, we could avoid the
danger of getting contaminated?!

Prevention has its own inner side, which is not less important. From
the point of view of Chinese medicine and qigong therapy, the general
approach to all diseases, no matter infectious or of other type,
consists in

reinforcing the vital energy.

In other words, this means to stimulate the immune system. When we
possess powerful vital energy, it will increase our protective forces
and then the harmful pathogens, including the viruses, will not be able
to invade our body. Is it possible that our powerful body will not cope
with one small virus?! All is a question of proportion of the powers:
who whom will overweigh.

Several years ago, in China there was done a unique experiment. In
Xianghe county, near Beijing, is kept the imperishable body of an old
woman. Although she has died 7-8 years ago, the energy of her bodily
tissues is still as powerful as it was before her death. Her energy
prevents the body from decay and outer influences. With experimental
objective, scientists put into her body different kinds of pathogenic
viruses, but they very quickly "run away" out of her body, because they
could not stand her powerful energy shield.

If we have strong energy, we have both health and immunity; if there
is decrease of the energy, then the immune powers of the body decrease
as well. "When the genuine energy is preserved inside the body, the
pathogens could not invade", says a famous Chinese proverb. If we are
strong from inside and possess powerful resistant forces, the noxious
viruses would not have conditions to live in our body.

The results of the clinical experiments in the Hong Kong and Beijing
hospitals show that the children, who are taken ill with SARS, more
easily get over the disease and recover quite fast. At the saime time,
these people, who besides SARS, also suffer from other illnesses, like
diabethus, heart, kidney and other chronic diseases, cope with the
epidemic with difficulty. All this is not accidental, but is due to
the stronger immune system in children. In principle, they have more
reserves of vital energy, which counteract to the outside attacks of
the viruses. The adults constantly waste their energy, which leads to
decrease of the protective powers of the body. That is why they
overcome the diseases much more heavily.

Therefore, in order to withstand all kinds of epidemics, first of all
one has to practice methods for increasing one's vital energy.

The regular practising of the quiet exercise (meditation)

in the Chinese healing system of qigong helps in a natural way to
achieve quantitative and qualitative improvement of the vital energy.
Scientists from China, Japan, the United States and other countries
have proved that this method plays an important role for strengthening
the immune system and prevention of illnesses, including viral
diseases.

On the other hand, the holistic approach and the sensible and
conscious way of living, that is in accordance with the cyclical and
temperature changes and the laws of Nature, will help us to waste less
energy and to not violate the physiological and energy balance of our
body.

The atypical pneumonia spread mainly in the beginning of spring. And,
the spring is a transitional period between the winter cold and the
summer heat (a transition from Yin to Yang). During the time of such
phases, our body is more vulnerable to viral dieseases and other
pathogenic factors. Thus, it is especially important namely during the
spring to reinforce our prevention. In this season, the temperatures
are unstable and constantly vary. Most of the people do not have
patience to throw off the winter clothes and to change them with the
more comfortable summer clothes. However, whether this always is
appropriate to the frequent changes of the outside temperatures?

According to the principles of qigong and Chinese medicine, during the
winter the vital energy "sinks" in the deeper parts of the human body,
while in spring, it starts to come out on the more superficial bodily
layers and activates its flow on the energy meridians. The energy,
which in the end of the winter and the beginning of spring has been
accumulated predominantly in the most inner parts of the body, creates
preconditions for a natural formation and accumulation of inner
pathogenic heat and dryness. Meanwhile, on the surface of the body
there is a lack of sufficient protective energy forces, so to overcome
the outside pathogens. When during the spring the weather is still
cold, windy and unstable, and one takes off one's warm clothes, because
one assumes that in this way one will cope with the feeling of heat
from the inside, in a result there comes out a cold and flu. The
strong wind and the cold penetrate through the body and one gets a
cold. In practice, the inner heat can not immediately be taken out
from the body. This needs a period of time. So, it comes out a clash
of pathogens of opposite nature that upset the energy balance between
Yin and Yang in the body. In Chinese medicine, this phenomenon is
called Syndrom of pathogenic heat in the inside and pathogenic cold and
wind on the surface of the body. When there is simultaneous
accumulation of pathogens with such a big difference, such as between
cold and heat, one easily catches a cold, especially if at the same
time one's vital energy is decreased. The cold represents a blockage
of pathogenic coldness. If with the time it is not removed out, the
pathogenic cold can transform into heat and phlegm, which lead to
inflammation of the tissues.

In the late spring and during the summer, when the weather is hot, if
we still have not cleared the accumulated heat in the body, then we
will have to make up for twice. The hot weather dehydrates the bodily
fluids (Yin) and creates conditions for inflammation. Usually at this
time of the year, most of the people experience inner dryness and heat,
which are manifested as different types of symptoms - dry throat, dry
mouth, thirst, dry eyes and skin, unrestful sleep, nervousness,
irritations and inflammations in different parts of the body.

Nutrition and SARS

In order to clear out the pathogenic heat and the dryness, which are
accumulated in the body, we need often to take foods and herbs with
cooling and anti-inflammative actions. Such are the green-leaved
plants, like Shepherd's purse, dandelion, plantain, purslane, cabbage.
Every day should be taken several cups of green tea or tea of mint,
plantain, chrysanthemum, elder, camomile, violet, honeysuckle.

These herbs could be eaten in soups, porridges and stews. Besides
them, there also can be used all foods, which have a direct healing
effect on the lungs.

According to Chinese medicine, the lungs are a "tender" and easily
injured organ, which has a strong connection with the outside
environment. Thus, the lungs are especially vulnerable to the viral
attacks. Helpful foods for prevention from SARS and strengthening of
the lungs are the Chinese white mushroom "silver ears" (Tremella), soy
been sprouts, turnip, onion, garlic, kiwi fruit, lycium berries
(wolfberry), vinegar, lemon, green tea.

What should be our strategy towards SARS and the other types of
epidemics?

From one point, we should not be afraid, but from another point - not
neglect them and think that they are no related to us. We should
neither underestimate the epidemics and diseases, nor be shocked and
worry too much.

The epidemics, including SARS, are phenomena, which could be overcame,
because we possess the real possibilities to increase our immune
powers.

There are gains in all loses

Like every other negative phenomenon, so the atypical pneumonia has
its own positive side. SARS initated a new boom of the traditional
healing methods and Chinese medicine; the people became much more
active and conscious in regard to the healthy way of living, the
strengthening of hygiene and prevention. As says the ancient Chinese
sage Lao Zi, "both the positive and the negative are my teachers".
Because everything can serve as a lesson, even if achieved through the
opposite effect of the negative phenomena.

The increased salivation is a very positive process, experienced in qigong
practice. It tells that new energy is generated during the the training of
the still qigong exercise (meditation). The consistency of this type of
saliva is much more watery and sweeter than the usual sailva. It is a sign
of trasformation of bodily fluids into qi energy.
Actually, in the ancient qigong books it has various names, one of which
is "jade elixir".

Take it easy and enjoy qigong,

Gregory

Dear folks,

Recently i am experiencing a quite interesting
phenomenon during the
practising of qigong meditation: every time i feel
that there is a
forming a watery kind of saliva in my mouth. Do you,
guys, know what
is this? My qigong instructor in Philadephia didn't
tell me about
this ocurrence.

I will appreciate your replies,
