Hi Kerry:
I live in Long Island, New York, and my son (in the 5th grade) was in a self-contained program in our local school district but was removed because they could not deal with his behavior. The reason I am writing is to tell you that even when schools offer the best set classroom, even with all the handbooks and information given to them to develop sure-sure tacts to deal with the behavior fail.
I was lucky to find a school specifically designed for children with neurological disorders (Aspergers, autisim, OCD, etc). The school is quite costly and we are fighting the school district to provide tuition reimbursement. It is called Gersh Academy. He just started his second day there (after being home-schooled for almost 5 months). It is unfortunate that their aren't enough programs in your state. I am still worried that the school district won't do their part to educate him. He is high-functioning and the school district failed all expectations.
Good luck and feel free to write back. I would do anything I can to help.
