Help! Jebediah will not stop eating tissue and other non food items.
Today he came across a bar of Ivory soap. By the time I found it,
most of it was gone, along with half the wrapper. I suspected Jeb of
course (we have 9 dogs). Sometimes he gets a stomach ache, like
tonight. Could this behavior be related to a nutritional deficiency?
In the past I have fed my dogs a bones and raw food diet, but with
the recent addition of two elderly family members into our home, I
put them back on commercial dog food. Jeb eats canned Ol' Roy, any
healthful scraps that I find, plus I add fish oil, homeopathic
allergy drops, and sometimes dandelion or other herbs. He loves
radishes. Unfortunately, two old ladies use a lot of tissues, and
they will not do without them, nor will they control them. I am
constantly looking for them on the floor, or tucked into furniture.
BTW, Jeb is a 6 year old Australian Cattle Dog. The breed is stocky,
but Jeb doesn't carry enough weight. The other dogs will
occasionally carry paper things in their mouth, and the Jack Russell
makes a real mess with a tissue.

Donnelly,
Thanks for your reply. Fortunately I was able to take
my two little dogs to a Naturopathic Vet in a town
near me and she checked them over using muscle
testing. She ruled out low thyroid on Sunny and
believes the hair loss might be from fleas. This is
the first summer I haven't used the flea drops that go
on the shoulder blades after finding how toxic they
are. Also, I've been gone most of the last 5 months
taking care of an ill father and wondered if the
stress of me being gone could have affected Sunny
also. The muscle testing procedure was so
interesting. She found candida in Sunny and put her
on Olive Leaf. She put both of them on detox drops
that go in the water and she gave me recipes to
prepare their food from scratch. I would highly
recommend a natural vet to anyone who has access to
one. Also, I appreciate so much having access to all
of you who are willing to help when needed. Thanks so
much!!

Linda,
Did any stressful event precede the hair loss? It could be anything from
stress related demodex to thyroid problems, to manges other than demodex. It's
really hard to say.

Hi Guys,
Wondered if anyone has any experience with hair loss. My
Poodle/Pom mix has never had hair problems or skin problems
before but recently has lost the hair on her stomach and the back
of her legs. It's normal on her back, face, ears, neck, and front
legs. Seems rather strange to me. I'd appreciate any feedback.

I don't know where all the members here are from, but I'm in the Dade
City, Florida area and I just found out these 3 dogs were abandoned
and are going to a kill shelter if they don't find homes by Monday
1/10/05. Please help us find forever homes before its too late.
These dogs are in the Dade City area. There will be aa small
adoption fee and the spay neutering will be included.
1. Rebecca 1-1 ½ yr old female Keeshond. Minds well. UPD on shots.
Had heartworm treatment & wormed. Needs room to play and an owner
that can keep up with her. Call for more info & adoption fee.
2. Peaches is 9 month old blue eyed, yellow lab/Husky mix. UPD on

Diane,
Welcome to the list! I'm so sorry to hear what is going on with your poor
old girl. Preparing her food sounds like a great idea. The folks at Nature's
Finest (who makes the EpiPlus for seizure dogs, Herbal Wormer, and Flea
Terminator) also make something called Nature's Power. I'm sure if you contact
Darleen (_darleen@..._ (mailto:darleen@...) ) she can get
some drop-shipped to you. Anyway, the folks at NF had a dog with cancer,
and they researched some of the very best anti-cancer herbs and formulated a
product to help other owners with cancer dogs. I don't have the ingredient
list in front of me, but I don't think any of the herbs would be hard on the
kidneys or pancreas. That is something we can research for you, though.
The home prepared diet without grains will help stop feeding the cancer, if
indeed that "suspicious mass" is cancer. The herbs of una de gato (cat's
claw), parsley, etc. will help detoxify the body and rejuvenate the cancerous
cells.
Good luck with her!! I hope her quality of life remains high.

Hello,
My name is Diane and I live in Portland, Oregon. I have a 15 year old female
Doxi-beagle mix who had kidney disease and just had a bout with pancreatitis.
She also has a suspicious mass in her abdomen possible on her liver, can't
tell without an U/S and I didn't want to put her through that when considering
her age and health there would be no treatment anyway.
I am cooking her food and giving her fluids at home. I have been in contact
with the K9KidneyDiet yahoo group which has been very helpful. Looking for
other opionions and advice nutritionally.

Cat,
Thank you for all the information! I really appreciate it. I will check out the
Nupro, and I am planning on getting the Colostrum, as far as I can tell there
are no side effects for that ;0)
With the rat Myco, it is not communicable to people, as the pig and chicken myco
is. If it were, a lot of folks would have it by now, I am sure, especially me
because I have had rats for 13 years.
Any way, thanks again for your help ;0)

In my research on the web, I am struck by the fact that mycoplasma is
communicable to humans, so take precautions when treating your sick rats. It
can
apparently be transferred from their mucus OR their feces as well, and the
virus becomes airborne as the feces dries out, so take precautions when
handling
their litter.
For treatment, the things that are suggested are garlic, DHEA, and colloidal
silver. I have no personal experience or knowledge of these matters, but
their articles and testimonials seem sound. Colloidal silver is a good mineral
to have, though it can, in excess, over a period of time, reportedly cause
the same effects as an anti-biotic in that it can wipe out the good bacteria
as well as the bad. In my opinion (and there is a lot of controversy about
CS), it would be okay to use as needed, and to supplement with it in trace
amounts. It's always good to give supplements a little break from time to
time,
and I practice that with my own animals.
I would think that astragalus and goldenseal would be good herbs to add to
their diets on a pretty regular basis, especially at the onset of symptoms.
Bovine colostrum is good to repair the lower intestinal tract in most all
animals. This is how it is linked with raising the immune system. If animals
and people are absorbing their nutrients more effectively, their immune
system in turn will of course work more effectively.
If you are looking for a good, overall immune enhancer, I would really
consider the yeast free Nupro that Purely Pets has on the website. It says
it's
for cats and dogs, but people have used it for other animals as well,
including raising crickets (grown for pet and bait stores). It's pretty
amazing
stuff. That's why I make sure I don't spill any on the countertops in my
kitchen. I fear I'll breed some sort of super ants that will take over my

Good luck in your search for the answer to your problem. I wish I could be

My name is Becky, and I have a menagerie ;0)
I am a Fancy Rat breeder, and rescuer. At the moment, I have 15 boy rats, 6
female rats, and 7 baby rats that are waiting for their new families to pick
them up. I also have a 3 year old Boston Terrier, a 3 year old male white tabby
cat, a 4 year old black female cat, and a 12 inch Red Lutino Oscar fish.
I have two rescue rats that have chronic respritory problems due to Mycoplasma,
which all rats have but is kept suppressed with their immune systems. My rats
with the Myco flares have scared lungs due to; 1 a past case of Pneumonia when
he was 6 weeks old, and 2 born and raised on cedar bedding with is toxic to
rodents causing lung scaring, respritory damage and cancer with long time
exposure. I am looking for a holistic, or natural way of either suppressing the
myco flares, or treating them, with out the use of antibiotics which lowers the
immune system. The Myco flares lower the immune system and cause the rat to
become susceptible to secondary upper respritory infections. The antibiotics are
to help the symptoms, and not allow the secondary infections, but like I said,
they lower the immune system even more than it is, plus, the rats can become
immune to the antibiotics, so if they DO get sick, the meds wont work.
My questions are also about Colloidal Silver and Colostrum. I have read about
them, and heard a lot about them on another "Holistic" group, but did not
receive the information I needed. I would like to know of anyone who has used
these on their animals, and what the results are. I have found some negative
info about the Colloidal Silver, but would like to know if any one has
experienced the side effects.
Thank you!

I was under the impression that they couldn't get rabies until 4 mos.
I have two dogs now, a chow who gets rabies every three years die to
law and the fact that I think she could survive an encounter w/ a
rabid animal making the shot useful. However my Yorkie pup as far as
I'm concerned will never get a rabies shot. If he was bitten by a
rabid animal, and around here that usually means opossom, racoon, or
armadillo, I don't think he would survive the bite, making the rabies
a non-issue. A couple of his sisters from other litters have had
fatal reactions to the rabies vacc., so I'm gonna avoid it
completely. The World Health Organization website has some
interesting information about vaccinations in humans and animals, you
should check it out, sorry I don't know the link.
Good luck

Hi,
I have a pet that has food allergies and major skin problems for almost a yr
now.
Yours is a difficult decision and all I can do is tell you my experience so
perhaps it can
help you decide what's best for Malachi.
After 10 months of going to regular vets, I decided they weren't helping my sick
cat
but making her worse due to the medications prescribed. (steroids,
antihistamine,
etc...) Her immune system is just not working right and it seems like she's
developing allergies to everything that used to work before. So I recently got
her to a
specialist vet that practices multiple modalities that are homeopathic and
allopathic.
After my initial visit with this vet, she said my cat has one of the worst case
of
allergies she's ever seen and she's been in the business a long time. She put
my cat
on a special homemade diet and stressed DO NOT allow her to have ANY
vaccinations!
My personal opinion would be if yours currently has immune issues, it would not
be a
good idea to have vaccinations. The immune system is already working overtime
due
to the allergies, you do not want to put it over the edge especially with the
allergies
not under control yet! Just be extra careful about letting him out & about
until he's
better and can have his shot.
Regarding food allergy, you should only feed him ONE novel protein diet for at
least
6-12 weeks. Goat, venison, and rabbit are "exotic" meat and you do not want to
expose your pet to all this now. Just pick one type of meat and stick with it.
The
theory is that when an animal is allergic to something, a new kind of meat that
the
animal has never had before is usually introduced exclusively. Since it has
never had
this type of meat before, there's a good chance that it will not develop
allergies to it
at that time; this gives the immune system a chance to recover. If you give
yours all
these exotic meat at the same time, then you will run out of exotic meat later
on to
feed him should he still have allergy problems and you need to do food trials.
The
only other exotic meat I could think of right now that's not on your list is
kangaroo
and ostrich - good luck trying to find those! Oh yes, read the labels! One
frozen
raw package I saw said it's venison but the ingredients says it also has another
animal's organs included in there. I couldn't use it and had to ban frozen raw
all
together for my cat.
As far as relief, try applying aloe vera externally to help with inflammation
and skin
healing as needed. Make sure the aloe vera does not have sodium benzoate in it;
it's toxic to cats.
As far as itch, you can give omega 3 and omega 6 supplements. They do wonders
with skin and itch. I was using flax seed oil and was told by my current vet
that the
form I have does not have an active form that cats can use. The brand that's
prescribed for my cat is called "Eskimo 3". It needs to be refrigerated once
opened or
will lose it's effectiveness. BTW, some cats are allergic to grains & corn so
make sure
yours is not getting that. If yours is on steroids, let me know and I can send
you
more links for alternatives to steroids. Here's a great link to check out:

Hi Malachi who is a year old now hasn't had his last series or rabies
that he should of gotten at 4 months.
I got him at 4 months and was suppose to get them for him which I
would of but he went through 3 surgies with in that first month of
getting him and some how the vets think he has his shots but he
hasn't to my knowledge unless they gave it to him and didn't charge
me or put it in his record which I find hard to believe they would
make that error.
So anyway he had what ever number of series they get before 4 months
but no last series or rabies.
He has skin allgery problems which I have been working hard to figure
out since we got him. We have made a lot of progress in this area by
changing to a raw diet and figuring out that he can't have beef,
chicken or any other meat that comes from an animal that has feathers
or a beak. He is eating goat, venison and rabbit right now.
I have worked on the supplements and all he gets and he is much
better but still having a few issues.
I am trying a new supplement right now so we will see.
I have been searching for a natural vet but can't find one close or
that is taking new patients. Looks like we might have to do a referal
if something doesn't turn up . But I am going to wait and see how he
does on this newest supplement.
I figure after Christmas is when I will do a consult if things aren't
looking better as they are much improved.
But anyway I got off subject here. What I want opinions on is what to
do about his shots.
He has immune issues I believe and I am not sure if I want to get him
any more shots. But we are going home in Dec and he is coming with us
as our guys always travel with us and I will need to get him at least
a rabies shot for the trip but I am not sure IF I want to get him the
series again or not as I was told that he should already have
immunity with the shot series he already got before 4 months.
Does anyone know anything about this.
I know I won't get him shots anymore often than every 3 years and
possibly not at all if I can get away with it.
But the rabies might be a different story.
Anyway just looking for opinions as I have heard not to vaccinate a
cat that has issues.
Thanks melissa
I took a look at the supplement and it looks great. Since there are some
unusual ingredients in it, I would introduce it slowly.

Hi Ginger,
The lump on the ear could be a cyst, but it is very important to first have
a vet look at it to determine what it is. Once you are sure, then you can
treat it holistically.

Hello Ginger,
My parents had a cat with cyst on its ear, it was not malignant but
the vet recomended draining it, that way the cat could not sratch it
and cause an infection. I don't know if it was painful, but the cat
definately seemed aware of it and was always trying to clean it off.
The vet said there would be chance it may return, but this was a few
years ago, and he hasn't had any problems since. For the procedure,
the vet did give the cat a mild sedative to calm it, but it not
require the cat to be completely asleep. Hopefully for you it will be
something as simpe. Good luck. Jenny

Perhaps you can ask your vet to do a blood panel to specifically
screen for thyroid problems if that is a concern - especially if it's
been a yr since the last lab work.
I don't know much about canine lab work but on the feline one there's
a very specific test to do for thyroid; a regular blood panel would
not necessarily give reliable results to rule out thyroid. One thing
I know is that you don't want to start treating for thyroid problems
unless you have confirmation that it is actually the problem.

Hello,
Here's a link that has info on thyroid problems. It is recommended
that you shouldn't "experiment" when it comes to thyroid problems.
It's better to have a holistic vet participate in the care with this
specific health problem. Anyways, although the link is from a cat
website, it has info related to dogs also especially regarding
thyroid. Good luck!

BTW, what made the vet think it was allergies and was it lab work that
confirmed the thyroid problem? I'm just curious...

Hi,
My Sheltie, Laddie, has thyroid problems. I just found this out about a week
ago. He's had this problem for over a year, and the vet kept thinking it was
allergies. His paws are raw and swollen and his body feels hot to the touch most
of the time. His fur looks terrible and I just feel really sorry for him. I
know there are meds the vet can give him to help him out, but are there any
herbal or home remedies I can use to make him feel better also?
Thanks for your help.

This has helped many animals with all sotrs of conditions, just

Canine Allergy-Hot Spots testimonial
My sister has an Australian Shepherd. The dog is allergic to dog
food so she is on a good balanced diet of cooked human type food.
She gets "Hot Spots" on her skin once in a while and the vet can't
figure out why. She takes pills for this and they sometimes work
for a while. We went walking on a Monday and the dog had a new hot
spot that erupted Sunday. Her leg was red and she had been licking
the spot. My sister decided to give her ½ teaspoon of XANGO twice a
day. I saw the dog again on Wednesday and the spot had cleared up
completely. The only way we could find it was to look for some
missing hair. The dog continues to take that dose of XANGO and no
other spots have erupted.

Does anyone know what range the ph should be in a dog shampoo?
Robin
dont know that for sure, you can call which ever company and ask the ph of
there product, i use a mixture of johnsons baby shampoo, 2 tea tree oil drops,
aloe vera gel, i shampoo with that, rinse with water, then in a gallon just
mix 1 cup of apple cider vinegar and fill to the top w/ water, then pour over
and rinse w/ water agin, the apple cider vinegar will bring the skin and
hair back to its proper PH, Pam and the hounds, 1 less 9/13 booooohoooo
