Subject: [purelypets] Puppy Help 911
. Get this... I'm supposed to hold him upside down for a
: > couple minutes a couple times a day!!!!!!!!!!!! >>
That may very well help him- sometimes the amniotic fluid gets inhaled into
the lungs- when we have a puppy that is not breathing at birth, we usually
"swing" the pup to help clear the fluid- it is hard to describe this, you
really have to have someone show you. But basically you stand with your legs
spread wide, and while holding the puppy securely, head towards the ground,
you gently but firmly "swing" the puppy forward and back a few times,
bending at the waist and swinging in an arc between your legs (like a
child's swing, basically, with your legs being the frame of the swing).
This helps force the fluid downward so it comes out of the lungs. I have
brought "stillborn" puppies to life this way.
I have also heard of other breeders who, if a pup is born like this and they
are busy helping mom with the next pups, will take the pup with the fluid in
the lungs, and place it upside down (head to floor) on a cutting board or
ironing board that is upright but on an angle ( / like this) , and patting
the pup every few minutes, like you would pat someone on the back that is
choking/coughing, to help expel the fluid.
I hope that makes sense! I'll check my breeding websites to see if there is
actually any pictures of this, to make it clearer!
