Lisa~
It is very true that herbs are not completely benign. Just like arsenic can
be therapeutic when used with extreme caution, it should not be used over the
long term or for minor problems that other substances could easily be used
instead. It's always about weighing the risks. That is why I posted the
warning about wormwood.
I have used ground pumpkin seed, grated carrots (or crushed egg shell),
non-chemically treated diatomaceous earth (which is now available at
PurelyPets.com in 3 lb jars, though it's not up on the website yet) and/or
garlic and ginger for intestinal worming, though if you are speaking about
heartworm control, what most naturopaths use is black walnut hull. It is
toxic to worms, as you say, and therefore should be used with caution as
needed.
I use it for 2 weeks initially, then start a one week on, 3 weeks off
routine, thereby givng the body plenty of breaks, yet it is still effective
for what I want it to do. I also use Aromaleigh flea spritz topically to
repel mosquitoes, and feed mosly BARF (biologically appropriate raw foods),
with other supplementation. I believe with this routine, I have my bases
covered.
