Thanks for the reply, Dee!
Could you please indulge me with the bad things you've heard about MSM? I just started supplementing Levi's diet with MSM two weeks ago so I'm not familiar with the pros/cons. I joined about 6 holistic pet/natrual pet lists yesterday to try to learn more about what I'm giving to my dogs. I put my faith in the animal nutrionist and just bought the stuff she recommended, but now I'm trying to make sure I did the right thing. Is MSM not a natural supplement? What "natural supplements" take the place of MSM? The MSM label says that MSM is a biologically active form of organic sulphur found in all living organisms and is found in varying amounts in raw unprocessed milk, meat, fish, fruits and vegetables. I guess I should add that the dog that is receiving MSM is Levi who has Juvenile Renal Dysplasia.
I read the same thing about the toxicity of aspirin for cats. The article I just read yesterday specifically said *not* to give aspirin to cats without veterinary supervision because they cannot metabolize it efficiently and, thus, could be fatal. But, the same article said that feeding aspirin to dogs is a common and accepted practice. I don't like to give medicine/antibiotics to my dogs if I can avoid it so I'm always looking for natural remedies.
As for the lavender, I don't think my dogs are eating it. Hard to tell, though, because they are little vacuums and often I'm yelling, "Leave it!" while out on our walks. LOL. But, once we're home and inside, I can smell the lavender on their heads. Personally, I LOVE that they smell so good...but just want to make sure they are not being harmed by it.

----- Original Message -----I have heard good and bad things about MSM. I would be inclined to try some of the other natural supplements known to help first.I know kitties do not handle aspirin of any type at all. They do not detox very well. I don't know about dogs. I do know dogs have better detoxing abilities.I don't think lavender is toxic, but then again, the kitties never try to eat any. I sprinkle a small amount of dried lavender blossoms (I grow it in the garden) between the sheets of newspaper at the bottom of the cat carriers when transporting kitties to calm them during the trip and I do believe it is helping. That aromotherapy stuff you know. I use a very small amount as I know essential oils can be toxic to cats and my blossoms are pretty potent. As for your dogs, gee, they may be going for their own "aromotherapy sessions". Tee hee!Dee
