Rebecca~
Wow. I don't blame you for feeling overwhelmed. My initial thought is that
you need a good holistic or homeopathic veterinarian. I will try to break
down your post in smaller, easier to digest components, but my advice should
not be considered a substitute for veterinary care. I am going to break up
my response into 2 posts, one for your first cat and one for the second one.
The reference guide I use most often is Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to
Natural Health for Dogs and Cats, though there are some wonderful books out
there on just natural cat health as well. I have dogs, and only stray cats,
so I keep the Pitcairn book around. You might want to pick up some books
that you can refer to when questions arise for future reference. I find them
indispensible around here.
First, regarding your 13 year old cat with Inflammatory Bowel Disease,
seizures and Cardio Myopathy: I am not familiar with Tenormin, but I know
that prolonged use of Prednisone can contribute to toxin related seizure
activity, and other problems. I think that if he had true epilepsy, you
would have certainly seen it long before this. I am going to privately send
you an article on seizuring pets after I post this to the list. that article
will give you natural alternatives to the pheno. I would highly recommend a
tincture called Newton's #1 detox (at PurelyPets.com) which will help
detoxify the liver and kidney's. Then as a follow-up, I would do our
complete line of kidni-tinctures.
There is some evidence that Cardio Myopathy is caused from vaccinations. I
found this out when my 2 year old pug died suddenly from it. For heart
conditions, Pitcairn recommends a natural diet (Science Diet is far from it),
and highly recommends raw food, though cooked is an improvement over Sci
Diet, it would just be missing the live enzymes that raw food has. You could
supplement the cooked food with Comple-Zyme which happens to be on sale
right now at PurelyPets.com.
He also recommends, No salt. No smoke.
Filtered water only.
Complete B-Complex. Trace minerals chromium & selenium and chelated zinc.
the most complete multi I can find with these components is the Nupro. It
just doesn't have the chromium, but then, none of them do that I could find.
Cats usually like Nupro because it is a liver flavored powder.
Regular daily exercise. For indoor cats you can get one of those laser pens
or another toy that would keep her busy.
In reading up on Inflammatory Bowel Disease, it is also linked to
vaccinations, commercial pet foods and use of cortisone drugs.
He suggests you omit the following from the diet and you can add them back in
one by one, a week apart to see if it causes a problem: beef, wheat, milk,
cheese, eggs, nuts, fruits, tomatoes, carrots, yeast.
You can add extra Vit - C. B-complex is also helpful.
On page 230 of his book, he has 2 different cat allergy diets, one that is
brown rice and lamb. The other is millet and turkey. he says keep them on it
strictly for at least 2 months before adding other items back to the diet.
So, in summation:
Natural diet, raw, or cooked with added enzymes
filtered water (which you are already doing)
No smoke, no salt
regular exercise
Supplementation with B-complex, Trace minerals chromium & selenium and
chelated zinc. Basicly this would be Nupro liver Flavored powder supplement
at PurelyPets.com, and some added chromium if you can find it at the health
food store.
Extra Vit C (ie. our Super C 2000)
After reading the seizure article, you will probably want to try the EpiPlus.
Newton's #1 Detox now, with follow-up care with all 3 kidni- remedies.
I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions.
