Re: Regarding BARF and Grains   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #481 of 1220 |
I have read all the info on grains, pasta, yeast, etc. One of my big
problems is that Rocky is highly allergic to many different food items --
actually had tests done; so at this stage of the game, we feed him whatever
he'll eat. He doesn't seem to have too much of a problem with yeast,
although at one time he did, and yes at that time we did cut out all sugary
(lactose, etc, grains, pastas) items until we could get things under
control. We feed BARF 4x a day because I cannot feed them enough in either
one or two sittings to get them the calories they need. Trust me, we were
up to 3 lbs of food a day for a 75 lb boxer -- he's feeling so good, he just
had too much energy and was burning everything he ate and then some. He
looked like he was malnourished he was so thin -- very very muscular, but
very very thin. Plus, the other thing is that in the winter, we've
generally had a problem with him collapsing and haven't been able to figure
out what causes it -- had his heart checked, etc. At this point, we've
pretty much attributed it to allergies. He always checks out fine, just a
fainting spell, but he always drops A LOT of weight when this happens, so we
try to bulk up so he has a little something to give. I have weighed lots of
options, and learned a whole lot about dog nutrition in the last 2 years, I
consult with a holistic animal nutritionist as well. Basically, everyday is
a new day -- trial and error -- and we go on how they look, how their fur
looks, how itchy they are, etc. So far it has worked. I always say, do
what you have to do to make the dog well. They get much more raw BARF than
they do grains. And he loves them so, it would break my heart to take them
away totally. Am I the sucker or what?

Stacy ~ Sounds like you are doing all of the right things. If you had a problem with yeast (which you would surely recognize having gone through it before)...
