we took all of them to be dipped (Pearl, Tiger, and Socks) and Socks got
deathly ill and gave us a fright. Pearl is now losing her hair. We are
looking for a holistic vet. The stuff they dipped them in must have been
extremely strong and it did not even help the fleas. I went to the health
food store and bought a tincture for the fleas and I can see them becoming
sluggish and falling off the cats sickly. This tincture also helps the
intestinal track. Any other ideas?

With cats because they can be so sensitive to chemicals in general the best
method is as follows:
If you have carpets, go to the grocery store and purchase several large
boxes of Borax (just plain old borax, this can be found in the laundry
supply area). Generously sprinkle your carpets with the borax, allow it to
sit overnight and then vaccuum. Wait one week and repeat. You don't say
whether your cats are allowed outside but if they are then repeat the borax
treatments on a weekly basis during the summer months when fleas are a
problem. This takes care of the fleas that hang out in the house off of the
cats. Basically it just dehydrates the fleas and they die. Won't hurt cats
at all other than perhaps an occasional sneeze if they bury their nose in
the carpet.
To remove fleas from cats: go buy a flea comb available at any pet store or
Walmart for a few dollars. Take the cat in the bathroom, sit on the floor
next to the toilet with the cat in your lap and comb using your thumb to
knock the fleas caught in the comb off into the toilet. Flush as necessary.
In the beginning, you will probably want to do the cats every day but as you
cut down on the population of fleas and remove them from your carpets with
the borax, daily combing may not be necessary.
It can get a bit time intensive if you have more than one cat, however, it
is truly the best method in my opinion to deal with the problem.
Hope it helps.
As for dogs, you might want to go look at the website for The Good Shepherd
as Mickey is part greyhound I believe.

Mickey is the black one with the floppy ears laying down.
