My name is Susan Taylor. I have an almost 8 yr old male Rottie (a rescue
I've almost 3 years) who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma on 2 Feb. The
tumor is on his rib cage, next to his right armpit. I fed him a modified
BARF diet until Sunday, when he went full time. And he's crazy about it :)
I've opted against surgery due to his age, location of the tumor and the
fact I'd have to send him to UF for who knows how long to have the rib and
some chest muscle removed and a chest patch put in. He's taking aspirin
for the pain. He's also getting echinacea, cat's claw, astagalus, pau
d'arco, shark cartilage, shiitake/reisha mushroom caps (in capsule form),
blue/green algae, B complex, Ester-C, vitamin A&D (one gelcap), E,
acidopholus and beta carotene. I add a little flax seed to his dinner (a
half and half mixture of raw ground beef and raw veggies). I occasionally
add liver or an egg to his dinner. For snacks he gets chicken wings or
thighs or beefy bones. I don't recall ever seeing him as hyper and full of
himself as he has been the last few days :) He's not a barker but has a
grumble/howly yawn noise he makes and he uses it to tell me to hurry up
with his food, for walks or going in the truck. His attitude and appetite
are great.
I check the tumor site almost daily and if it has grown in the past month,
it hasn't been by much. I know that osteosarcoma in untreatable and the
choices I've made have been for his benefit, not mine.
Hank is also a therapy dog and a very popular one in your town. He's a
clown and loves to be petted.
