Help! Jebediah will not stop eating tissue and other non food items.
Today he came across a bar of Ivory soap. By the time I found it,
most of it was gone, along with half the wrapper. I suspected Jeb of
course (we have 9 dogs). Sometimes he gets a stomach ache, like
tonight. Could this behavior be related to a nutritional deficiency?
In the past I have fed my dogs a bones and raw food diet, but with
the recent addition of two elderly family members into our home, I
put them back on commercial dog food. Jeb eats canned Ol' Roy, any
healthful scraps that I find, plus I add fish oil, homeopathic
allergy drops, and sometimes dandelion or other herbs. He loves
radishes. Unfortunately, two old ladies use a lot of tissues, and
they will not do without them, nor will they control them. I am
constantly looking for them on the floor, or tucked into furniture.
BTW, Jeb is a 6 year old Australian Cattle Dog. The breed is stocky,
but Jeb doesn't carry enough weight. The other dogs will
occasionally carry paper things in their mouth, and the Jack Russell
makes a real mess with a tissue.

Yes, it is definitely a sign of nutritional deficiency or illness. I forget what it was, but someone on my pug list had a dog that ate soap. She took him...

Soap and tissue eating are a sign of a calcium deficiency. I would recommend a high quality vitamin containing at least 50 mg. of calcium for a pet 50 lbs....

I have a 6 month old pup who also loves to tear up tissues. I don't know if he actually ingests any though. He's on all raw diet with RMB's making up about 75%...
