Re: Skippy & Roxie

Thanks for the welcome. Yeah, I have alot of questions! You all will probably be
sorry that I came aboard! :-) But I'll try not to be too much of a pain in the
butt. Anyway, I think a big question I have is how to find a good vet. The vet
we have now I think is ripping us off and not taking the best care of my
animals. I mean, I took Roxie (dog) in for a complete check-up and later found
out he hadn't bothered to check her for heartworms. He said come in for another
appt for that (so he can charge another office visit fee). The "complete"
checkup appt was close to $200 so I think this vet is just after our money.
Another time we took her in because she was scratching at her ear and the inside
of the ear flap was very red. The vet told me to wait in the waiting room while
he took Roxie to a back room. After 10-15 minutes or so, the vet told me she had
an ear infection and prescribed antibiotics plus an ear wash & ointment. He
didn't even show me how to apply this stuff to her ear, I found that info on the
net. Anyway, another $200 bill and at the end of the treatment period, the
problem was back. For several months, I have become interested in Aromatherapy
so I decided to try it on the dog. The book I have had a "recipe" for dog ear
problems. The recipe was to use the essential oils lavender, chamomile and tea
tree oil in a carrier extra virgin olive oil (I forget the exact formula). I
used a cotton ball to dab it on her ear and after 2 or 3 days, the redness was
gone! Essential oils really do work but they are very powerful so one must use
caution. It would be great to find a vet who is in favor of more natural methods
of healing, using the traditional medicine when necessary. And of course the
ideal vet should care about my animals more than money. Sorry for the little bit
of venting about the vet; I love my animals and I want the best health care for
them so they will live as long as they can. I know the time will come someday
but I don't know how I'm going to handle their passing away; when I think about
it I just start bawling.
