I had the same problem but with one of my cats. He was overweight (actually
all of our animals were) and was having severe health issues - urethra
blockages, etc. The vet was surprised because we fed him very high quality
cat food (all of our animals ate excellent quality food with absolutely no
by-products, fillers, etc.) and only gave the animals filtered water, etc.
Basically, we were doing all the right things. Why then were my animals
putting on the pounds and developing major health issues?
I decided to start back at the beginning and started making my own food for
the cats. I had been making food for my dog for awhile because she could not
tolerate food that was processed. But she was having health issues even with
her homemade diet (cooked meats, grains and vegetables). After doing
extensive research and reading, I switched all of them to a raw meat diet.
This consists of raw ground turkey meat (the favorite for all three) with
cooked buckwheat (buckwheat is not a grain) and fresh grown sprouts. I mix
this up once a week for all the animals and then freeze the portions. I mix
up some supplements and sprinkle them over the meat mix. I have been
including digestive enzymes, lethicin, brewer's yeast, and bone meal. I
can't remember if there is anything else I use in the powder. My animals are
really thriving and the health issues that were becoming so predominant have
virtually disappeared. My animals are actually eating less because they are
able to absorb more nutrients from the natural diet. They are now well
within their normal weight which I am happy about because I really saw some
health issues forming because of the excess weight.
This transformation was so inspiring to me, that my husband and I have
started eating raw foods (not meat though) and have realized the same
results. All of my health symptoms have disappeared, and I feel younger and
more vibrant than ever. I have lost weight, eat less naturally, and have the
same level of energy I had when I was a small child.
It has really shown me first hand how important it is to eat the right
foods. Just like people, I don't think animals do very well on processed
food, regardless of the quality of ingredients.
