This group is for anyone with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) caused by domestic violence (DV), whether experienced directly or as a witness to a parent or family member’s abuse. PTSD caused by domestic violence is different than PTSD caused by any other form of trauma. We have unique symptoms, triggers, and issues. Our traumatic event isn’t one event, doesn’t have a beginning or ending dates, and it’s usually years long. For some of us, our traumatic events encompass our entire lives! We cannot compare ourselves to how we were “before”, because we either don’t remember “before”, or we were too young to really have a “before”. This is a place where we can share our experiences, offer insights and advice when we can, and, of course, get some support when life gets crazy!
Here’s a little about me: I witnessed my stepfather abuse my mother throughout my childhood, and was abused myself. Like so many other child victims, I followed in my mother’s footsteps and married an abuser/alcoholic whose father was also an abuser. After separating from my husband, I sought therapy for the first time and was quickly diagnosed with PTSD. My primary symptoms are anxiety, depression, panic attacks, and memory loss, sprinkled with nightmares and the occasional spontaneous memory recovery. I also deal with codependency issues and general DV survivor stuff, such as debilitating baseless guilt. I’ve made good progress toward recovery, but some days are better than others. My husband has been sober for over two years. We’re back together now and with the help of a great therapist are finally learning how to build a healthy relationship.
Feel free to share any thoughts, ideas, problems, issues or completely irrational panic attacks! And remember: When you stop allowing yourself to be a victim, you become a survivor!
