Cross-Cultural Counseling
The Arab-Palestinian Case
Marwan Adeeb Dwairy, DSc
Visiting Professor, Graduate Studies Program, Nova Southeastern University, Oakland Park, Florida
About The Book:
As a therapist, you may find yourself at a brick wall when you try to treat Middle Eastern, North African, South American, Asian, and other clients with psychotherapeutic techniques formulated in the West. As Cross-Cultural Counseling: The Arab-Palestinian Case illustrates, the construction of self, community, and society is remarkably different in Arab countries. Only certain aspects of Western psychotherapy can be adapted to respond to the unique sociopolitical conditions and cultural factors affecting the mental health of people raised to consider community needs over self needs and desires. This text suggests a biopsychosocial approach to treating psychological disorders among Arab clients and highlights differences in the prevalence and manifestation of psychological disorders among peoples of South/Eastern backgrounds, as compared to what is known in the West. You’ll gain an education and understanding from Cross-Cultural Counseling that helps you provide more effective services to Arabs and Palestinians to meet their mental health needs.

Cross-Cultural Counseling shows you how divesting therapeutic techniques of cultural sensitivity results in the alienation of clients who are not accustomed to recognizing or meeting their individual needs. It suggests a biopsychosocial approach to treating psychological disorders among Arab clients and highlights differences in the prevalence and manifestation of psychological disorders among peoples of South/Eastern backgrounds, as compared to what is known in the West. Challenging therapists to discard their misconceptions and biases about people who don’t fit the Western mold in terms of individualization, identity, and personality, the book also covers:
  • different sociopolitical situations in Arab countries and the maintenance of authoritarian and collectivistic culture
  • psychocultural features of Arabs
  • socialization in Arab homes and schools
  • help-seeking behavior among Arabs and poor mental health service delivery in Arab countries
  • factors threatening the unity of the Palestinian family
  • therapeutic recommendations for traditional clients
According to author Marwan Dwairy, Cross-Cultural Counseling is meant to “undo the dehumanization that has surrounded Palestinian-Arabs and help clinicians to understand the behavior of the Arab client and come to know the person in him or her.” Certainly, no other book can help you, as a psychologist, psychiatrist, or mental health professional, treat Palestinians, Arabs, and other South/Eastern clients as efficiently and successfully.

    Reviews:
“A VERY VALUABLE COMPENDIUM of many clinical insights . . . And is a recommended introduction to clinical work with Arab clients, and indeed with minority populations in general. Students and practitioners of nursing, psychiatry, psychology, social work, or other helping professions could learn much from this publication. Clear, precise, and concise. . . Wide-spread implications with respect to developing mental health services, training mental health practitioners, and delivering mental health services. For those practitioners, students, or members of the public interested in examining these matters, Cross-Cultural Counseling: The Arab-Palestinian Case is an eminently useful place to begin.”

Israel Social Science Research: A Multidisciplinary Journal

“The author has rendered A GREAT SERVICE to those who are interested in or dealing with cross-cultural issues. his insights into the cultural differences, social views, attitudes, family structure, and historical heritage of Palestinian Arabs play a very important role.”

    Southwestern Journal of Theology

“Given that Dr. Dwairy, a Christian who is a Palestinian living in Israel, has experienced the confluence of several cultures, he is in an excellent position to provide a guide for treating Arab-Palestinians. Although one may not always agree with Dr. Dwairy's interpretations of historical events, one must respect his expertise in underscoring the social context in which psychotherapy is delivered. THIS BOOK SHOULD DEFINITELY BE READ BY STUDENTS ENROLLED IN CROSS-CULTURAL COUNSELING CLASSES.”

Michel Hersen, PhD, ABPP, Professor and Dean, School of Professional Psychology, Pacific University, Forest Grove, Oregon

“Written by one of the pioneer clinicians among Palestinians in Israel. . . . An illuminating book for all therapists, especially for those who deal with patients coming from diverse cultures.”

Dr. Shafiq Masalha, PhD, Clinical Psychologist Supervisor, Counseling Services, Hebrew University of Jerusalem

    COPING WITH TERRORISM
    From the American Psychological Association

Terrorism threatens a society by instilling fear and helplessness in its citizens. It seeks to hold a society or government hostage by fear of destruction and harm.

When terrorist acts occur, people generally look for ways to cope with the acute stress and trauma. Terrorism evokes a fundamental fear of helplessness. The violent actions are random, unprovoked, and intentional, and often are targeted at defenseless citizens. Trying to cope with the irrational information that is beyond normal comprehension can set off a chain of psychological events culminating in feelings of fear, helplessness, vulnerability, and grief.

Xenophobia -- fear or hatred of strangers or foreigners -- can be heightened under a terrorist threat and can become a social and psychological danger. The fear generated by terrorism can be exacerbated by a population’s diversity if there is distrust between groups, categories and classification of citizens. People need to recognize that diversity in a population is often an opportunity for unity and strength. There are members of our diverse society who have experienced past terrorist incidents. The knowledge and experience they have gained from surviving and coping with these incidents can make them a valuable resource on how to cope and how to offer assistance to others.

    Who Is Affected?

After a terrorist attack, many people are impacted. People who have experienced the trauma often fall into the following categories:

    • Survivors of past traumatic events (e.g. refugees of wars, terrorism, or torture, and survivors of domestic violence, child abuse, or street crime). These individuals may have a heightened sense of vulnerability.
    • People who personally witnessed or were victims of the terrorist attack.
    • People who experience traumatization from learning of relatives, friends and acquaintances who were subject to the violence, or from exposure to repeated media accounts of the trauma.

What You May Experience Following a Terrorist Attack

People who have experienced or witnessed a terrorist attack may go into a state of acute stress reaction. You may feel one or all of these symptoms:

    • Recurring thoughts of the incident
    • Becoming afraid of everything, not leaving the house, or isolating yourself
    • Stopping usual functioning, no longer maintaining daily routines
    • Survivor guilt -- "Why did I survive? I should have done something more."
    • Tremendous sense of loss
    • Reluctance to express your feelings, losing a sense of control over your life

    Coping with the Trauma

    1. Identify the feelings that you may be experiencing. Understand that your feelings are a normal reaction to an abnormal situation.
    2. Remember that you have overcome adversity and trauma in the past. Try to remember what you did that helped you overcome the fear and helplessness in that situation.
    3. Talk to others about your fears. It’s okay to ask for help. Workplaces may convene small groups with an EAP counselor or other mental health counselor so people can share feelings.
    4. Make efforts to maintain your usual routine.
    5. Think positively. Realize that things will get better. Be realistic about the time it takes to feel better.
    6. Recognize that the nature of terrorist attacks creates fear and uncertainty about the future. Continue to do the things in your life that you enjoy. Don’t get preoccupied with the things you cannot control to the extent that they prevent you from living your normal life.
    7. Know the actions our government is taking to combat terrorism and restore safety and security. Recognize that trained officials throughout the country are mobilized to prevent, prepare for and respond to terrorist attacks.
    8. Limit exposure to media coverage.
    9. Tips for helping children cope:
      • Encourage children to say how they are feeling about the event.
      • Ask children what they have seen, heard or experienced.
      • Assure children that their parents are taking care of them and will continue to help them deal with anything that makes them feel afraid.
      • Help children recognize when they have shown courage in meeting a new scary situation and accomplished a goal despite hardship or barriers. Instill a sense of empowerment.
      • Let children know that institutions of democracy are still in place and our government is intact. (It can also be helpful for adults to realize this.)
      • Know that it is possible for children to experience vicariously the traumatization from the terrorist attack (e.g. watching TV coverage, overhearing adult conversations).

If you are having trouble coping with the terrorist attacks, consider seeking help from a psychologist or other mental health professional. There are many ways to feel traumatized by terrorist incidents. Psychologists and other licensed mental health professionals are trained to help people cope and take positive steps toward managing their feelings and behaviors. This fact sheet was made possible by help from the following APA members: Rona M. Fields, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and professor of sociology. She has researched and written on stress and violence of terrorism in societies and situations of change and upheaval. She is a frequent consultant on terrorism and its effects and has worked in Northern Ireland, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, South America and Asia. Joe Margolin, Ph.D., is a Clinical - Social Psychologist who has worked on the social stresses of terrorism. He has worked with victims of terrorism in Israel, Latin America and the United States.

    -----Messaggio originale-----

    Oggetto: I: DIRITTO ALLA VITA

    messaggio.
    Tratta di

qualcosa che noi tutti, uomini e donne, dobbiamo
    affrontare.

    significava semplicemente
    non

coprire gli occhi nella maniera dovuta. Una donna è
    stata picchiata a
    morte

    all'aperto in
    pubblico

senza un parente maschio; professioniste come docenti,
    traduttrici,

dottoresse, avvocatesse, artiste e scrittrici sono
    state costrette a

    non

sia vista dall'esterno. Devono portare calzature
    silenziose in modo da
    non

essere mai sentite. Le donne vivono temendo per la
    loro vita che
    potrebbero

    assenti. In uno dei
    rari

    parlare,

mangiare o fare altro, a consumarsi lentamente. Altre
    donne sono
    impazzite e

sono state viste rannicchiate in un angolo, a
    dondolarsi di continuo o
    in

lacrime, la maggior parte di loro terrorizzate. Un
    dottore ha
    considerato

    adeguata a
    descrivere

    e dei suicidi;
    donne

che erano educatrici o medici, o semplicemente
    abituate alle più
    elementari

libertà sono ora duramente limitate e trattate come
    esseri subumani nel
    nome

del fondamentalismo islamico. Non si tratta della loro
    tradizione o

    umani,

in favore dell'etnia albanese, i cittadini del mondo
    possono certamente

    omicidi
    e

le ingiustizie commesse contro le donne dai Talibani.

    RICHIESTA:

Nel firmare questa petizione, concordiamo nel
    considerare l'attuale
    trattame

nto delle donne in Afghanistan totalmente
    INACCETTABILE e meritevole
    di

un'azione da parte delle Nazioni Unite. La situazione
    in Afghanistan
    non

sarà tollerata. I diritti delle donne non sono in
    alcun posto un
    problema

    come

subumani e come una proprietà. L'eguaglianza e la
    decenza umana

Attualità, notizie, eventi Posted by Mimir on Thursday, May 24 @ 08:40:12 GMT (0 reads)

Dall'altra parte, ci sono i NEMICI DI INTERNET E/O DELLA GLOBALIZZAZIONE TOUT COURT, e i SOLITI PARRUCCONI A CACCIA DI PREDE DA PERSEGUIRE E. A LORO VOLTA VIOLENTARE.

Posted on Wednesday, May 23 @ 20:33:51 GMT Contributed by: Mimir

Ogni anno in Italia escono 4500 nuovi film porno.

    Argomenti:

    01) La fiera del sesso
    02) Attrici, attori e produttori porno
    03) A Praga: "Tutto ha un prezzo"
    04) Un agente o un pappone?
    05) Ciak, si giri
    06) Entra in azione il G man

    Pedofilia, l'inchiesta continua

We have visited your site and we found it's very nice designed with good content inside.
We are interested in buying the highest quality traffic from You.

    Information about us:

AbsoluteAgency.com is one of the most largest Dating targeted site in the internet.

We are GROWING and we have good positions in WWW business. High quality designed, easy to navigate, low service prices - all make us BEST!

New for 2001 - Sex Education

Sex Education is a new international refereed journal concerned both with
the practice of sex education and with the thinking that underpins it.
Contributions are welcomed from within a variety of academic disciplines -
particularly health education, sociology, philosophy and psychology - and
from a variety of ideological standpoints. Submitted work should connect
significantly with issues concerned with sex education and have presumptions
made by the author(s) described and defended.

Sex Education does not assume that sex education takes place only in
educational institutions and the family. Contributions are therefore
welcomed which, for example, analyse the impacts of media and other vehicles
of culture on sexual behaviour and attitudes. Medical and epidemiological
papers (e.g. of trends in the incidences of sexually transmitted infections)
will not be accepted unless their educational implications are discussed
    adequately.

Volume 1, issue 1 contents include:

Men Teachers and the Construction of Heterosexual Masculinity in the
Classroom - Becky Francis & Christine Skelton

Sex Education and the New Zealand Primary School: a tangled skein of
morality, religion, politics and the law - John A. Clark

Sex Education - the issues when working with boys - Gillian L. S. Hilton

'Living in Different Worlds': gender differences in the developing sexual
values and attitudes of primary school children - J. Mark Halstead & Susan
    Waite

For more information about the journal and for details on the introductory
    offer please visit
    http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/carfax/14681811.html

    * Rates only applicable to individual subscribers - offer ends 30/6/01
