This does not make any sense Sharon, and the attitude of not checking further
into this because it "might" be ok is a head-in-the-sand response to something
you can actually deal with now effectively. If possible I would go to a
urologist outside the VA to get a second opinion. A decent pathologist would
not be unable to tell. If the cells are abnormal, there will be a "Gleason"
score that is an attempt to classify the agressiveness of cancerous cells.
The PSA is not a positive test for cancer, but suggests that there may be a
problem. The hardened and enlarged gland is further evidence of a problem. The
biopsy is the test that can identify cancer.
I am 56 and now dealing with a recent diagnosis of cancer. My father died
of prostate cancer at age 73 after ignoring the need for periodic exams and
responsiveness to his body. Had he dealt with this at my age, he would probably
still be alive today.
Please get a second opinion. The known facts in your husband's case
suggest cancer. Fortunately, prostate cancer can be effectively treated if he
acts now.

Hello--
My name is Sharon and I was so glad to just find your group. I was
seeking advice regarding prostate troubles for my husband.
He is 61 and gets regular prostate exams at the VA. His PSA levels
always come back high...last one was in the 20's. And the exam always
shows his prostate as hard and enlarged. Within the past year, he had
biopsies done and from 8 biopsy samples taken, 7 came back as normal
or negative for cancer and the other one they couldn't tell anything
about.
I guess my question is, can a man have that high of a PSA level and
an enlarged protate without necessairily having prostate cancer? Can
other things cause that? They wanted him to come back and re-do the
biopsies just because they could not get a decent reading on just
that one, but he refused thinking if 7 came back OK, chances are he
does not have prostate cancer. He has had one bout of prostitis a
couple of years ago. Any feedback would be so appreciated...I thank
you for this group and thanks in advance for any replies.
A Concerned Wife :)
