Well, we are officially started.

Yes, it was quite a surprise to get on the scale. I am not sure what
happened, but it appears that it may have broken since I last used it
as the numbers being reported are different than what they were a few
weeks ago.... Hmmmm....

Anyway, Day 1 is upon us. Ain't it great.

By the way, we are up to $4.75 per pound on sponsorship. That is
awesome. I am going to try and pick up a few more sponsors too, I will
let you know.

Well, eat right, eat healthy and exercise. only 83 days left. 100
pounds to go.

Take care,
Danny

Hi All,

As an update we have

5 Members willing to jump into the 100 pound challenge, and so far a
total sponsorship of $4.25 per pound.

Let me know if anyone else is interested in joining the challenge or
sponsering the challenge. It will go towards a really good cause, and
it is always better to lose weight as a group, then individually.

Hello to all,

I don't know about you, but I am finding myself falling into my old
habits. Bad food is good, if you know what I mean.

I would like to challenge anyone who might be interested to join us
in the "100 POUND CHALLENGE".

Here is how it will work:

As a team, we will work together and in the next 12 weeks lose a
combined 100 pounds. It really is simple. If there are 4 of us— that
is only 25 pounds each. If there are 5, that is only 20 pounds each.
Though this seems like a lot of weight to lose, it really is not. It
is less than 2 pounds a week per person. TOTALLY DOABLE!!!!

Here is the BEST part….

I already have a few sponsors lined up that will donate money to
allow us to buy food. My goal is that at the end of this challenge
we are able to buy at least 750 pounds of food to donate to a local
shelter. As of today (3/24) we already have pledges equal to $3 for
each pound lost BY THE ENTIRE GROUP!!!

What can you do??????
1. Join me on the weight loss team. If you have some weight to
lose, let's do it together. Studies show that having a strong
support group is key to losing weight.

2. How about adding some money to the total pledge amount?? It
would really help everyone on the weight loss team if we know that
for every pound we lost, SEVERAL pounds of food will be donated. Dry
dog food is about $30 for 40 pounds (Depending on what you buy) so
any amount even 25 cents/pound will help us meet the overall goal.

3. EVEN BETTER, how about doing both!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This challenge will start on Wednesday 3/26/08 and run until
6/18/08. We will do like we did last time where every week the team
members will just provide me weight loss for the week and overall
weight loss for the challenge. (See files section for easy
spreadsheet)

Let me know if you are interested in joining and supporting me and
the rest of the group members.

Marine reunited with dog he rescued
The Associated Press
Article Launched: 03/23/2008 01:33:57 AM PDT

SAN DIEGO (AP) - A San Diego-based Marine major was reunited Saturday
with one of his closest war buddies - a 2-year-old dog named Nubs.

Nubs greeted Maj. Brian Dennis at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station
when the fighter pilot returned from Iraq.

It was the first time the two were together since Dennis' family and
close friends helped raise $3,500 to fly the dog to San Diego about a
month ago. Nubs wasn't allowed to stay on base in Iraq.

Dennis, 36, of St. Pete Beach, Fla., had spotted the mongrel dog
while on patrol in Anbar province and later nursed the animal back to
health after finding him stabbed with a screwdriver.

He named the dog Nubs after learning someone cut the ears off
believing it would make the dog more aggressive and alert

Great, Crystal Springs it is.

I would propose Saturday at 11:00am (unless it rains) Anyone else
want to join us?

Crystal Springs is up in San Mateo. It follows the Freeway, and is
next to the large resevoir at the intersection of 280 and 92.

Let me know,

Hey,

Who is up for a walk? I am thinking either Crystal Springs up in San
Mateo, or Almaden Park in San Jose depending on Interest.

I would also be up for another suggestion if you have one.

I am thinking not this weekend but next? March 8 or March 9?

Let me know,

That's a great story. Our efforts may be small right now, but I hope we are also changing the lives of our animals friends for the better.

Nubs the Iraqi dog finds something to bark about after rescue by

SAN DIEGO - It began with a simple act of kindness to save an abused
and injured dog from becoming one more victim in the war in Iraq.
But what followed for Marine Maj. Brian Dennis and the mutt was a
tale of friendship and loyalty that spanned miles, borders, and
overcame long odds - a tale that takes a turn Friday with the
anticipated arrival here of the Marine's best friend.

"This dog who had been through a lifetime of fighting, war,
abuse ... is going to live the good life," Dennis told his family in
an e-mail from Iraq.

The tale of friendship unfolded in October, a few months after
Dennis deployed to Iraq from San Diego to work as part of the
military team building infrastructure along the Syria-Iraq border
and training Iraqi forces to take over.

Dennis, 36, of St. Pete Beach, Fla., had volunteered for the
assignment. It was a departure from his role as a fighter pilot. He
had seen the country from the air. But on the ground, it was
different.

Dennis wrote stories home about the reciprocal relationship that
desert dogs, strays wandering outside border towns, had with Iraqis.

"The dogs get to eat the Iraqi scraps and have a home in the middle
of the desert," he wrote in an e-mail. "The Iraqis get an incredible
early warning system; these dogs hear anything approaching from
miles away and go nuts and scramble to defend their territory."

While on patrol in the Anbar province, Dennis spotted what appeared
to be a gray and white, male German shepherd-border collie mix. He
named the dog Nubs after learning someone cut the ears off believing
it would make the dog more aggressive and alert.
Within weeks, Nubs was greeting Dennis during routine patrol stops
along border communities. The Marines fed him bits of their food and
by November, the Marine and his unit were keeping an eye out for the
dog, who routinely chased their Humvees when they departed.

Life on the run, however, was taking a toll on the dog. He had lost
a tooth and been bitten in the neck. In late December, Dennis found
Nubs near death in freezing temperatures. The dog had been stabbed
with a screwdriver.

Dennis rubbed antibiotic creme on the wound and slept with Nubs to
keep him warm.

"I really expected when I woke up for watch he would be dead,"
Dennis wrote. "Somehow he made it through the night."

Dennis thought he had seen the last of the dog days later when his
squad headed back to their command post some 65 miles away. He
couldn't take the dog with him and watched as it tried to follow the
Humvees away from the border.

Two days later, while Dennis and a comrade were working on a Humvee,
he looked up and saw the dog staring at him.

"Somehow that crazy damned dog tracked us," he wrote Jan. 9.

But the reunion was short lived. Military policy prohibits having
pets in war zones, and Dennis was given four days to get the dog off
the base or kill him.

The decision was easy: Nubs was going to San Diego. The logistics,
though, were anything but easy.

With help from his Iraqi interpreter, Dennis managed to find a
Jordanian veterinarian to get the care and paperwork needed to get
it to the states. He also negotiated the red tape to get the dog
across the border into Jordan.

His family and close friends helped raise the $3,500 needed to get
the dog from Amman, Jordan, to San Diego, said his mother, Marsha
Cargo.

"I just can't believe it. Out there in the middle of nowhere these
two find each other," Cargo said.

A colleague in San Diego agreed to care for the dog and have it
trained until Dennis returns in March from Iraq.

"We anticipate a real steep learning curve for Nubs," said Capt.
Eric Sjoberg. "We want him to learn to just be a dog."

For now, though, Dennis will settle for the knowledge that Nubs is
finally safe - and waiting for his master to follow him.

I just wanted to give everyone an update on what has been going on
with my weight and exercise. Since November, I have lost 10 pounds!
Yeah! I have really been trying to make better foods choices and stop
eating when I feel satisfied.Chocolate cookies are still hard to pass
up but from now on, I can eat the "serving size" it says on the box
instead of eating the entire box. Yesterday I went to the gym and
walked 15 minutes on the treadmill. Today I walked for 21 minutes and
it was great! Tomorrow I have a meeting with a personal trainer. I
am feeling intimidated and excited all at the same time!! Have a
great night everyone and keep up all the hard work!

Thank you, all, for the generous donation to FOSMAS. We are an all-
volunteer organization with no paid employees, so 100% of your funds
will be used to provide care for the homeless animals of Santa Clara
County, either at the San Martin Shelter or in our foster homes.

I posted several pictures of cats and a dog, all of these three are
safe in our foster homes. Since they have no voice, I'll say it for
them: THANK YOU for your support! Check out our website and see
some of the animals that you are helping: http://www.fosmas.org

As for me personally - well, I think I was the biggest loser (and I
mean that in a bad way) but there's always the next time, right?
Congrats to all the winners in this round, great job and keep up the
good work.

Thanks again,
Kathy Hodgdon

Hey everyone,

Hope you are great. First of all, I have added some photos that I have
been promising to add to the photos section of the group. So please
check it out, there are some good ones there. Also, I just wanted to
give you an update on how things are going in the P4P world. Laura and
I went to the shelter today and were able to accomplish two things.

Money to F.O.S.M.A.S
We were able to meet up with Kathy and Sue from F.O.S.M.A.S and donate
the money that was raised during our latest fundraiser. They were very
happy and excited. F.O.S.M.A.S does a lot of great work with the local
animal shelter, and they can really use the $$$.

Volunteer Orientation
Laura and I attended the volunteer orientation at the shelter and will
start to log some volunteer hours. There at the shelter the volunteers
are responsible for socializing the animals and then also helping folks
that are looking for either lost animals or animals that they want to
adopt. Today was the cat orientation, and then I am going back tomorrow
for the dog orientation. We are also going to donate food tomorrow so I
will add a few more pics. They have a new supervisor at the shelter
named Brigid and she said that they really need puppy food, so that is
what we are donating.

Well, back to life for me. I made some P4P business cards, let me know
if you would be interested in getting some. I am going to try and start
leaving them at different places. Hopefully we can get a few more
members and really go crazy on the food donations.

Now that it is over, it is ok to celebrate, BUT after that, let's
make sure we all stick to our healthy lifestyles.

also, since the weather is getting nice, I will schedule a walk.

Hello to all,

Well, we have 1 week to go and there are a few that are really
KICKING BUTT!!!!! Keep it up.

Our Top 3 weight losers for the week are:
Dawn at 1.49%
Dianne at .76%
Donna at .57%

For the contest The leaders are:
Donna 4.57%
Dawn 3.88%
Dianne 1.53%

For me, well let's just say that things are not going too well. As
you all know I was in Las Vegas last weekend, and had overall a
really positive experience. It is possible to eat healthy even when
traveling, but because it was my birthday I definitely made some bad
choices. Ultimately the worst choices came at dinner time. There are
some fantastic restaurants there and when I find a good restaurant,
it is almost impossible for me to pass up unbelievable appetizers,
salads, main courses, and of course do not forget about the
wine..... YAY for Dan.... BOO for Dan's weight.

By the way, we were able to hit the fitness center while we were
there. We stayed at the Southpoint Hotel/Casino/Spa and though they
charged $15 per day per person to use the fitness facilities, it was
well worth it. They had the largest fitness center that I have seen
in a hotel, and included in the charge you had use of all of the spa
facilities including Hot tubs, cold tubs, sauna, steam shower and
nice shower facilities. I was not prepared for all the extras so I
only used the treadmill and sauna, but next time for sure. It is
nice to be on vacation, work out and then pamper yourself a little
bit, in fact IT IS A REQUIREMENT.

Anyway, since I have been back, work has been crazy!!! Yikes. And
then to top it off, we had a special night planned over this last
weekend(Went to Cirque) so of course after Cirque du Soleil we had
to go to a nice dinner..... Damn, fondue in general is not that bad
for you but why do they have to finish off with the
chocolate......OH YA!!!!

OK, back to work for me. This is the last week of the contest so you
only have 1 week to go. Though I cannot win this thing, I guarantee
that I will be in the top 3 weight losers for the week!!!!!

Let's all have our best week yet.

Dan
