I'd like to propose that our next fitness challenge be based on "minutes/hours" since folks like to do different types of work outs. Thoughts?

Hey Everyone,
Hope all is well, sorry for the quietness of the group. Laura and I are now happily relocated to Olathe, Kansas and all is well. We love our new house, love the new jobs (Laura got a new position within her existing company), and I LOVE the weather. We have already had some thunderstorms and I giggled like a schoolgirl.
Over the last few weeks, I had started noticing that my clothes were getting alot tighter, and the stairs seemed more difficult than they used to be. All of a sudden I realzed that 4+ months had gone by, I had completely fallen off the healthy wagon and had not been eating right, nor exercising regularly. It is amazing to me how easy it is to fall back into the old patterns. I crawled on the scale and was horrified to see that I had put on most of the weight that I lost last year. The final kicker was when I decided to go for a walk today. I was quite surprised to find out that a 13 minute brisk walk
kicked my butt.... MAN, was that crazy. Back in September and october we were walking 1+ hours at a time, and though a little sweat would form it was nothing like I experienced today, Huffing and Puffing, you would think I was trying to run up to the top of Mount Everest.
So to answer my original question, what do you do when your clothes are tight, and the stairs are a challenge AND, a 13 minute walk kicks your butt? Well, you move forward. There is no point worrying about yesterday or the day before, I can only focus on today and what is happening tomorrow. Back on the healthy train for me. Eating right and daily exercise, it is no longer optional.
I have heard rumors of another walking challenge coming up, perhaps end of April or beginning of May, so keep an eye out for that. Hope everyone else was able to keep walking through the holidays. I will check back in a couple days to let you know how things are
going.

Red meat raises risk of all kinds of death
Print By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Editor Maggie Fox, Health And Science
Editor – 2 hrs 40 mins agoWASHINGTON
(Reuters) – People who eat the most red meat and the most processed meat have
the highest overall risk of death from all causes, including heart disease and
cancer, U.S. researchers reported on Monday.
The National Cancer Institute study is one of the largest to look at the highly
controversial and emotive issue of whether eating meat is indeed bad for health.
Rashmi Sinha and colleagues looked at the records of more than 500,000 people
aged 50 to 71 who filled out questionnaires on their diet and other health
habits.
Even when other factors were accounted for -- eating fresh fruits and
vegetables, smoking, exercise, obesity -- the heaviest meat-eaters were more
likely to die over the next 10 years than the people who ate the least amount of
meat.
"Red and processed meat intakes were associated with modest increases in total
mortality, cancer mortality, and cardiovascular disease mortality," Sinha and
colleagues wrote in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
They divided the volunteers into five groups, called quintiles. Between 1995 and
2005, 47,976 men and 23,276 women died.
The quintile who ate the most red meat had a higher risk for overall death,
death from heart disease and cancer than the men and women who ate the least red
meat.
The researchers said thousands of deaths could be prevented if people simply ate
less meat.
"For overall mortality, 11 percent of deaths in men and 16 percent of deaths in
women could be prevented if people decreased their red meat consumption to the
level of intake in the first quintile," Sinha's team wrote.
HELPING THE ENVIRONMENT
Many studies have shown that people who eat less meat are healthier in many
ways, and Sinha's team noted that meat contains several cancer-causing
chemicals, as well as the unhealthiest forms of fat.
The U.S. government now recommends a "plant-based diet" that stresses fruits,
vegetables and whole grains.
Barry Popkin, an expert in nutrition and economics at the University of North
Carolina, said the study was unusually thorough and careful.
Eating less meat has other benefits, he said, and governments should start
promoting this. For instance, farming animals for meat causes greenhouse gas
emissions that warm the atmosphere and uses fresh water in excess, he said.
"I was pretty surprised when I checked back and went through the data on
emissions from animal food and livestock," Popkin said in a telephone interview.
"I didn't expect it to be more than cars."
Cancer experts said the study fit in with what is known from other research.
"This large study provides further evidence to support the recommendations by
groups such as the World Cancer Research Fund in demonstrating an association
between a high consumption of red and processed meats and a increase risk of
death from cancer," said Ian Olver, Chief Executive Officer of Cancer Council
Australia.
The meat industry denounced the study as flawed.
But American Meat Institute executive president, James Hodges, said: "Meat
products are part of a healthy, balanced diet and studies show they actually
provide a sense of satisfaction and fullness that can help with weight control.
Proper body weight contributes to good health overall."

Yes, I made it home. It was a marvelous week of travel with the 149.4
miles walked by the whole team this past final week. I flew East and
North and drifted over Crystal Minnesota and there was two of the
team members walking and passing each other often- what a sight.
Heading up north, I passed over Pine City and look down and low and
behold-was another team member walking the gravel roads. It looks
like they might have had quite a bit of rain and a few nights of
frost-BURR!. I have to keep going and get home before it snows. I am
in view of my house and boy will it be great to be home. I can see
the gardens were taken care of and if I can find just the right
pumpkin, I might join the big contest.
Thanks to each and everyone of you for making my journey so
interesting and enjoyable. I climbed and I flew-oh what a trip. I'll
be resting up over the winter and improving on my skills. I've
enjoyed being your Mascot and hope you might need me again. Have a
great winter where ever it takes you. No matter what you do-BE SAFE!

GRAND TOTAL===== 1786.9 FANTASTIC MILES walked in 12 weeks
It was a great 12 weeks. We all became healthier, and can you believe,
walked all those miles. I was hoping for 1000 miles and the ten team
members went way past that in reaching 1786.9 miles in the 12 weeks.
Be watching your mail for your winning Cash prizes and medals for
those of you that finished in the top 3 and the rest of the team
members be watching for your participant certificates.
We raised approximately $550.00 which included the $100 for the
prizes which leaves $450.00 to go to publishing and printing of the
Animal Shelter flyers in California. What a wonderful cause!
Thank You for all your team support and spirit-We needed each and
everone of you and no one let the team down. If you get a chance or
have a reason-just keep those feet amoving.
Dianne
Yes, what a fantastic week this past week. The team walked 178.4
Miles-(2nd highest week of miles walked in the past 11 weeks.) I am
definitely on my way home. I got some terrific news. One of our team
members adopted a beautiful black labrador dog named Lulu from the
shelter in San Martin. She has adjusted to the cats and is already
getting lots of walks-go Lulu.
I am traveling east and just passed over Grand Canyon and onto the
Table Rock Lake Area. Looks like our team members are walking in a
large nearby church parking lot. Wow-lots of churches down there.
Maybe that is why they call it the Bible Belt?
Heading to the North now and just passing over Jesse James place in
St Joseph Missouri-that's quite a story. I hope to be home by next
monday the 27th of October. My neighbor Al capone and his thugs(I
mean staff) have been watching my place and tending to my gardens. I
heard there is going to be a big Halloween Pumpkin Carving and
Decorating Contest and I want to make sure I get me entry in on time.
We now only have 1 week left of the walking challenge and I still
need your help to get all the way home. So keep those feet a walking
anyhow and anywhere you can,

fall days and time with family, friends and pets on your continued
walks.

Thanks for all the miles that were walked this past week. It was a
whopping 131.6 miles and that means I am heading West-Looks like
Denver has had Snow and Minnesota has had Rain most of the week-
Yuck!!.I'm not going in that direction. I think I got the GPS
figured out and it seems "it" did not understand the UP North
direction last week.
I'm traveling over a beautiful area in San martin CA-looks like it
might be the South County Animal Shelter. I've heard that they have
lots of dogs and cats looking for new homes. I see two or three of
our team members out walking and exercising the dogs-Sure hope they
find new homes (not the walkers-the dogs). Stop by if you get a
chance, I know you would be welcomed and put to work.
With those great miles walked this past week, I think I will drift
over the San Jose Area and check on our team members that have been
moving. It was only a 2 block move but what a big job. It looks like
they must be done-I don't see piles of boxes along the way.
The coast is beautiful and it is about the end of this weeks journey.
Keep those feet a walking anyhow and anywhere you can and thanks

I'm still getting use to using the GPS. I thought I was heading up
North and low and behold with all the miles walked this past week
(142.1), I ended up over looking the Hot Air Balloon Fiesta in
Albuquerque New Mexico. There are hundreds and hundreds of beautiful
large hot air balloons. I can see Snoopy, a Stagecoach, Large Pepsi
can and yes, they are all flying in the air. It looks like they had a
hard time getting the whole cow up in the air. She is dragging her
backend-like some of us in the morning. The colors are so vibrant. A

Yes, What's that?? I am moving along quickly with all those extra
miles walked(137.5) this past week. I can look down and there are
maizes in the fields. The fields have been cut in different shapes
and range in different sizes. I see shapes of the Capitol Building,a
John Deere Tractor,a Witch riding her broom. Oh My Goodness!!! So
many of the people(little dots to me) look lost. I hope they find
their way out. Thank You to all of you that walked or tried to fit
walking into your busy schedules this past week, those steps or miles
are helping move me along my journey. I received a text message that
some of you were getting ready for winter-putting up new insulation,
had sick kittens all night long, while others were busy with daily

to improve our overall health. Walking is one of the best forms of
exercise. Thanks for being part of the team and keep up the great

Hello Down there-I'm starting to level off now and the scenery is

It is so beautiful up here. With the teams efforts this past record

tied down was a wonderful colorful huge Hot Air Balloon(thanks Donna

week of 186.8 miles was enough to get me IN the balloon. As I am
flying higher, I can even see in the distance--my House. No More

Hi,
Our shelter supervisor sent out the following email the other day.
We have a horse in need that was abandoned and needs Eye Surgery.
Here are the details. I was thinking about taking the money that I
would have sent to the GA program and use it to help Pirate. If you
would like to help, let me know and you can either send money to me
or directly to the shelter. He is a great looking horse, just needs
a little help so that he can be adopted.
Thanks
Dan
Dear Horse Lovers-
Thank you so much for your support of our horse adoption program at
the shelter! This year, we have rehabilitated and placed three
horses in new, loving homes. Our latest equine in need is Pirate, a
14yo Quarter Horse mix gelding found wandering on Ferguson in
Gilroy. He has been at the shelter since August 12, and no one has
claimed him. He is very easy to handle and has been ridden (he came
in with three shoes on and major wither scarring from an ill-fitting
saddle). We trimmed his feet and have been fattening him up;
however, he needs to have eye surgery to be adoptable. Many people
have expressed interest, but changed their mind at the thought of a
big vet bill. Tri-County Vet has already done some diagnostic work
on him, so we would like them to do the surgery. It will cost
~$1000, $200 of which the shelter can pay from our medical fund. If
you wish to donate, please send checks to: South County Animal
Shelter, 12370 Murphy Ave. San Martin CA 95046. Checks can be made
out directly to "Tri County Vet." Pirate goes to a foster home this
weekend to continue his rehabilitation; I will get pictures and send
updates to anyone who is interested. Many thanks!

I hope I can reach the top of the mountain this next week (monday).
That would mean the team has walked 1000 miles in the past 7 weeks. I
hear alot of strange Poofs & humming noises up there but I just can't
see what is happening! I know you are moving those feet just as far as
you can-once I get up there I will let you know what is going on.
Keep those feet a a moving anyhow and anywhere you can,

I am so Happy!! The team had another record week and I got another
feather on my hiking boots. The way things are going I will fly
higher and off this mountain. Weather is turning a little chilly up
here and supplies are starting to freeze. I heard from the base camp
that the weather is changing for everyone down there-sounds like rain
& windy conditions. I just can't believe you are helping me in
getting to the top so quickly. We have 6 weeks behind us now-Keep
walking anyhow and Anywhere you can-but do it safely.

Our team walkers are continuing the great pace this week and are
noticing inches lost round the middle-for some of us-other places also.
What a great benefit is that???
Did you know?- "Walking is American's favorite form of exercise-Five
times more popular than jogging. You can lift your mood and burn a
substantial 176 calories per hour at a comfortable pace!"
Keep those feet a walking and enjoy the weekend.
Dianne
Yes, How many?? When I reach the top of this mountain I Hopefully
will be able to fly up even higher-I don't care to hike back down-
Everyone is walking and getting those needed miles behind them and it
looks like we will meet our goal of 1000 miles soon-Keep those feet
awalking anyhow, anywhere you can-I hope to be hearing of a new weeks
record next Monday, remember I am only a mountain climber by accident
and I need your help! From high on the mountain, Your hiking Buddy-

Found another interesting article in the October 2008 issue of Family
Circle-
"If going for a walk never seems to make it onto your to-do-list,
there is another reason why it should: Learning to move a little
faster may help you live longer. You can improve your lung capacity
and cardiovascular health in just 3 weeks" Hey, we all are
healthier!!!!
As I have mentioned in the past I like to grab a South Beach bar as I
go out the door-well in the last box-they through in a new item Free.
"Free is good". It is called "Tide me Over" and is a nutrient
enhanced drink. It was the Natural Strawberry Banana flavor-you mix
it with water. It only has 30 calories,3 G of Protein,and 5 G of
fiber. It is filling and very tasty. I use it for a great afternoon
snack/drink. It cost around $375 for a box of 7 packets. Give it a
try and let me know what you think.
Thanks for being part of this great team and good luck, Dianne
Hi,

Congrats to everyone on your fantastic walking.
By the way, just warning everyone, I FEEL BETTER, and I am walking

"Feel Draggy Before Walks? Try Nibbling a light 200 calorie snack.
Foods with slow-digesting lean protein and faster-digesting carbs
boost energy level, fueling you up before your walk.
Some bites to stoke your stamina:
Half an apple and one stick of low-fat string cheese

Keep those feet moving, Dianne
Yes, It is true. We found two pennies in the very large parking lot
during our walks and we continued inside of the casino. As we rounded a
corner by the buffet out of a door comes an employee. She said you must
be walkers! I wonder if it was the way we were sweating or just the
hard breathing? She ask if she could walk with us and quickly got up to
our pace. She asked how long have we been walking and how many miles a
day do we try to get in, and what great excerise it was and good for
us! She continued on with us for a distance and than said goodbye as
she was off to work in the casino. You never know what you might find
or who you might meet out on a walk. Keep those feet a walking and we
will tally all the new miles on monday. Dianne
Off to Kansas City Missouri to do a little gambling. We will measure
out a walking path around the casinos and will probably find more coins
in the parking lots than we will receive from the slot machines. Good
Luck and keep those feet a walking!!!
I passed the word on to Will N' Walk today and feathers have been
added to his climbing boots again and he is climbing higher up the
mountain-WOW!!!!!
The teams total for this past week was a whopping 144 miles which
gives us a total of 399.5 miles for the first three weeks. And yes,
that is 1/4 of the 12 week challenge behind us.
Our top walkers were
Dave--27.5
Donna-26.5
Laura-22
Our team consists of people that are busy all the time. They work,
are students, and some are retired-yes, we are busy too.
Laura brought up a great way to get those miles in. If you can not
get out and walk-grab one of those Walking DVD's. There great and
come with different walking distance plans/programs plus a couple
little stretch exercises included. Wear what you want and do it when
you can!!!Thanks Laura-any recommendations for DVD's? How about a
treadmill?
Also, some of our team members have been sick this past week-so take
care of yourselves-Remember we are in this for our health- Alive not
dead!
Remember a journey of 1000 miles starts and continues with just 1
step. Don't give up- just look back and see how many miles you have
already walked. The challenge is to have completed 1000 miles in 12
weeks as a group. 1000 miles divided by 12 gives us about 84 miles a
week and divide that by 10-Wow-If we each average per week 8.4 miles
over the 12 weeks-we will have Will N' Walk right up at the top of
that mountain. The way it looks we will have to add a very high tree
on the top to continue the climb. It was suggested that he could be
put in a hot air balloon to finish the journey upward(thanks Donna.)
Continue your plan of action and good luck this next week, Dianne
Ok, I dropped some this week – need some tips for keeping this up! I only got 6 miles this week.

That is interesting that you mentioned that about falling back into
old eating habits. I was talking to one of our walkers and she
mentioned the same thing. She had gotten back into the breads &
Potatoes and just didn't realize it. With myself, I had been
skipping or having a very late breakfast. Not Good!!!! Now that we
have started the walking challenge I try to grab something early in
the morning. My favorite is the south Beach Cinnamon & Raisen Fiber
bar. It is quick and can be eaten on the run(Walk). How is everyone
else doing? Have you found any new tricks or yummy-good for you-
Snacks? Good luck this week, Dianne

So, I have made an interesting observation about myself, and I
wonder if anyone else has noticed it too.
After the last weight loss challenge, I stopped exercising as much
as I should and I noticed that I stopped eating healthy. All of a
sudden, I was back to eating the things that I used to eat before.
With the walking challenge, I have started exercising ALOT more than
I was, and with this increase in exercise, came an unexpected change
in behavior.
I am eating healthier.... Not by making conscious decisions, but
instead, I notice that I am craving salads, making only half a
sandwich instead of a whole sandwich. Automatically grabbing the
baked chips instead of the fried ones....Just as second nature, not
that I am trying.
Anyone else noticed this? I have noticed that when I do think of
eating bad foods, my first thought is how much do I need to walk to
work that off.... YIKES!!!
Anyway, hope everyone is meeting their goals so far this week.
Personally I am aiming for 12 miles. Will see how it goes.

This means you burn calories long after you stop moving. And you don't have to get all of your walking in at once. If you don't have time for long walks, find pockets of time throughout your day for short jaunts." But
