Re: [postpoliosyndrome] Heeee'ssss BBBaaaaaaaaccccckkkkkkk

Jack I am so glad that you are ok.  and yu are so very lucky that you got a doc who was familiar with pps.  I really wish I had one out here.  I have a pillow top mattress and it is great but when I put a mattress on top of it I sleep like a dream.   I have problems with pain during the summer with my swamp cooler, it causes me to have lots of pain.  Vicadon just doesn't seem to do it for me anymore.  ANyway I am so glad you are better, I miss your emails.  The are so compassionate and caring, I missed them....your friend always elane

Greetings and Salutations:
I am back home again after a very short visit to our local Health
Clinic. ( In Canada that is a hospital that has been cut- back to
minimal care....lol )
I was very fortunate to be looked at by a Dr. from South Africa, who
was very very familiar with Polio, and PPS.
The first thing he wanted done is pain control. I was given two IV'S
of the greatest pain killer in the world. The first one didn't do
much, but the second one was the enough to make me feel like I was 25
years old again. I wish they sold this by the gallon, I would by a
truckload
of it. What a wonderful feeling to be totally pain free.
I had x-rays taken, which didn't show much, but with my MRI scheduled
for the 24th, the Dr was not too keen on sending me into Edmonton by
ambulance to have an MRI done.
After spending what seemed like a lifetime on that hard as rock
gurney, and having a complete exam done by the Dr., I was taken to a
private room and placed on the softest bed I had ever felt in my life.
As it turned out, this bed had a 4 inch foam pad on top of the
mattress, and I was soon out like a light. ( I think the pain meds
had a lot to do with that ).
I was amazed, that the following morning ( yesterday ) I woke up
without a single pain in my body. It has been years since I have felt
this way.
My Dr. explained because of the wasting in my lower back and legs, I
was litterally laying on a bed that was way too hard for me, as I had
no padding for my back or hips. His advice was to pick up a foam pad
at least 4" thick, and use it on my bed at home. Got to say I was a
little skeptical at the time, but we did as he asked, and went and
spent the ridiculous price of $300.00 for a pad for my bed.
This morning is the first time my wife has ever had to wake me up,in
I would hate to guess how many years. I slept right through the night
without waking at all, and would have been quite happy to have slept
4 or 5 hours more...lol.
I was totally amazed at how I felt, and cannot believe the difference
in my pain level. I have a small amount of pain in my back, but
nothing that I can't handle. No more pain in my hips, or my legs, and
I feel wonderful again. The bed I have is only 6 months old, so its
not like I am trying to sleep on a worn out mattress. Its is just too
hard for me, as I am creating pressure points on my body, which in
turn causes me the pain even while I am sleeping.
So as silly as it sounds, I am feeling 10,000 % better, just because
of a 4 inch foam pad.
So if you thought you were rid of me for awhile, I hate to disappoint
you, as I will be in chat tonight, or tomorrow, or whenever there is
another chat.
Thanks to all my wonderful friends who sent me the encouraging e-
mails, as they were very comforting, and its terrific that there are
such caring members in our small group.
Later Alligator
Jack
