Respectfully, you just made my points for me. I did not misinterpret you and I certainly did not twist around your words. Whether or not you know him personally is irrelevant to the beating he perpetrated against his wife, unless it puts you closer to the facts of the case such that you dispute them, which you do not. Why wouldn't his case be the "correct" case of "domestic violence" from which to launch a discussion thereof? You said that he must have been "stressed out." Hmmm. He just "exploded." Hmmm. In "the heat of the moment." Hmmm. What on earth are those phrasings supposed to mean? What does "sorted out" mean, in this case? Who does the sorting out? Does he simply pay "compo" to her family? Does that make it go away? I should think that you would have accurately concluded from the facts of the matter instead of excusing his behavior, which you
just admitted to. Again, being his friend or being his enemy has no bearing whatsoever on the case. I cannot tell you how many times I've seen/heard of/witnessed similar behavior on the part of male "health" workers be swept under the rug.

What was that about, Lawrence?
Don’t misinterpret what I am saying. And do not twist my words around to say that I am tripping over myself to excuse his behavior.
I am speaking here as a friend of his among other friends of his on this forum to let them know what I saw on the news. It is a personal note to the other friends of his.
The root cause of domestic violence in PNG is deeper. To fix one thing you have to fix others, and the discussion is lengthy. But that is not the purpose of my note.
A discussion on domestic violence; you can do it on this forum but do not use Lewas case to launch into it.
I was just notifying my other friends who also know him personally.

I'm not sure which is more shameful . . . the doctor who brutally beat his wife or your tripping over yourself to excuse his behavior. Please consider what this suggests about how seriously wife-bashing is taken, if even doctors excuse it. "Stress?" Who is stressed more in PNG? Men? Women? It's neither an excuse nor a justification, but it almost always gets treated as such.
One might also consider the wisdom and what it says to international communities if a man who is being considered for a high post in the NACS also repeatedly bashed up his first wife, so frequently, in fact, that she left him. How serious are the male "leaders" in PNG about wife-bashing. Call it what it is: it's not "domestic violence," which would involve furniture and counter-tops. Too many women live in a state of terror.
Just my opinion.

Hello guys,
I was just browsing the news and I saw this article about Lewa, my classmate in med school.
I just hope that things get sorted out between him and his wife. He is a good guy, (lively and at times also a comedian), he must have just been just too stressed out and just exploded in the heat of the moment.

Thanks for breaking the silence! DV is usual in PNG but not in Australia. In PNG sometimes the women assault man too, especially the highlands woman. Many husbands & fathers have been stabbed to death so guys becareful when you think of recruiting a 2nd or third or just a part-time.
At Goroka General Hospital, we have already commenced clinical research. The few set backs are that our ties with PNGIMR is not very strong, lack some basic facillities and the lack of research time allocation for our registrars (No research time is incorporated into their MMed program). However, we have identified topics which we feel are feasible at the our hospital & have already commenced on some of these topics. Some we have presented at the symposium and are in the process of publishing them in peer
reviewed journals.
Finally, I hope all is well, for other guys out there!
William Mol (Head & Neck SurgeryUnit, Goroka General Hospital)
I am looking for the MOs and SMOs mostly based in PNG especially in the Centres outside of Port Moreby who are interested in some research and most importantly wanting to do some private medical services at your locations. I am working out a nationwide linked private medical service and research opportunities that could be done during your off days/after hours and weekends.
I do understand that most of us are RMO/MO/Registrars as public servants and are SMOs of less than 5yrs of prior service that are in the category restrictive to the current NDA awards in terms of Limited Private Practice. The SMOs qualified in the NDA award for private practice is also certainly welcome. For research purposes any one intersted could be linked. I am also mindfull of the overwhelming bored times you peripheral collegues face so given the arrival of the advances of technologies such as the telecommunication I believe If we are focuced we may redeem some extra joy into our carent practice/careers. Currently there most of us are still on the crossroads and still waiting for the direction until that leader arrives so for now lets start doing some little bits here and there!
If your are interested or just curious please do not hesitate to register via my contact srkotapu@...
Please inform others that are not hooked to the pngdoctors-generalyahoo messaging, and for those hooked allow the freedom of your curiousity to take you to any lenght - the constructuve once would be noted...thanks

However, if it was cholera one would not last more than 2 days (dead by then). If they make it beyond 2 days then it could be shigellosis or typhoid. Food poisoning (bacterial exotoxins in food) could not last more than 2 days & they are not as fatal as cholera!
This is what I can remember from the lectures we heard from a WHO expert who visited us! We definitely need lab confirmation before spreading rumours.
what are your thoughts on the research and the MPH?
I am currently off on sick leave and currently in Cairns seeing a doctor there..will be back in mosbi Oct 20 and work when i feel fully recovered.
best wishes for your work in enga

hello olgeta,
upla olgeta stap orait tasol?
Apart for willie did anyone else attended the symposium in POM? I know Ian was there but was unable to meet with him.
Willie and I had some great discussions about our group and we agreed that we should continue to encourage and support each other whereever we are. We at ILRH are in the process of getting our VSAT system with hitron so hopefully by next year if all goes well I should be emailing from Wapenamanda!
I am just been thinking about this cholera thing in Lae. I have not sighted once in any of the newspapers or from EMTV whether the bacteria causing cholera, vibrio cholera has been isolated from patients presented with symptoms of cholera. I am assuming MSF is doing these kit tests but no confirmation or reports fo the bacteria being isolated from the victims have been reported!!
And also I am wondering how did cholera ended up in the bushes of Menyama?? I would think that we would expect an outbreak in the majour cities where the big ports are, before spreading inland. Or was it taken there by some illegal hideaways up the bushes? or is from the mining/activities up there? I hope the health authorities come out clear and tell us where they the source came from.

Dearest Friends,
I hope this finds you all well in your part of the woods. Some of you may already know Joanne's (my wife's) situation, for some it may be the frst time to know that towards the end of last year she was diagnosed with breast cancer. We are currently in Townsville for treatment as PNG does not have he resources, and with a little time in my hands I am learning about this "blogging" thing on the internet. So I have made a blog site for us to update on Joanne and our situation for those who have internet access and are interested. the site is www.pojaroo.wordpress.com , you can visit it whenever and see for yourself, leave comments etc...

I am now in Tokyo, Japan. I am studying orthopedic reconstructive surgery techniques, mainly after ablative surgery for sarcomas, at Japan`s biggest & oldest private hospital: http://www.jfcr. or.jp/english/ which specializes in the treatment & research of any kind of cancer.
Ofcourse, Rodney, I am still attached with Goroka General Hospital. There is so much work there. Will be in Japan this week & next week only, then I will return to Goroka.
