Yep, the internet thing in PNG is still very primitive. Hopefully they do something about it quick so that every one out there can get excess.

Do you by any chance have the email or phone contacts of the following people:

1.  William Kaptigau
2. Ikau Kevau
3. Chris Marjen

If you or anyone seeing this know the addresses, can you send it to me? I need to contact them for a few things.

Happy New Year to you too, and Gong Xi Fa Cai (Mandarin for happy new year), dan selamat tahun baru(Bahasa for happy new year).

Career Awards for Medical Scientists
Grantor:Burroughs Wellcome Fund
Region:All Regions
Closes:10/01/2009
Maximum:$700,000

* Career Awards for Medical Scientists

Application deadline for 2010 awards:
October 1, 2009 by 4:00 p.m., Eastern Time
By electronic application only.

Five-year $700,000 awards for physician-scientists bridge advanced
postdoctoral/fellowship training and the early years of faculty service.
Proposals must be in the area of basic biomedical, disease-oriented,
translational, or molecular, genetic, or pharmacological epidemiology
research. Proposals in the area of epidemiology should contact BWF to
determine their eligibility. Proposals in health services research or
involving large-scale clinical trials are ineligible. Awards are made to
degree granting institutions in the U.S. or Canada on behalf of the awardee.

The Career Awards for Medical Scientists (CAMS) program is the result of
the reformulation of the Career Awards in the Biomedical Sciences
(CABS), which was instituted by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund (BWF) in
1995 and ran through the 2006 award year.

In response to the NIH's K99/R00 Pathway to Independence program, which
was modeled after the CABS award, BWF has shifted the focus of the CABS
program to address the on-going problem of increasing the number of
physician scientists and keeping them in research. BWF believes that
this bridging award, supporting the last year(s) of a mentored position
in addition to supporting the beginning years of an independent
position, will facilitate the transition to a career in research and buy
time from service commitments.

Eligibility

Candidate eligibility and institutional nomination requirements are set
out below.
Candidates

The ideal candidate will be two years away from becoming an independent
investigator, have at least two years or more of research experience,
and have a significant publication record.

* Candidates must hold an M.D., D.D.S., D.V.M., Pharm.D., or equivalent
clinical degree.
* Proposals must be in the area of basic biomedical, disease oriented,
translational, or molecular, genetic, or pharmacological epidemiology
research. Proposals that are in the area of epidemiology should contact
BWF to determine the eligibility of the proposal. Proposals in health
services research or involving large-scale clinical trials are ineligible.
* BWF encourages nominations from candidates who work in reproductive
science.
* Candidates must be a clinical fellow, resident, or a postdoctoral
researcher and have at least two years of research experience at the
time of application.
* Candidates who hold a junior faculty appointment (Lecturer,
Instructor, Assistant Professor-non tenure track, etc.) may be eligible
if they have been in a faculty position for two years or less at the
time of application.
* Candidates must not be more than 120 months past their most recent
doctorate. No exceptions will be made.
* Candidates with a clinical degree not awarded in the U.S. or Canada
must be licensed to practice in the U.S. or Canada.
* Candidates must be committed to a full-time career in research as an
independent investigator at a North American degree-granting institution.
* Candidates must be nominated by accredited, degree-granting
institutions in the U.S. or Canada.
* Candidates must be citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. or
Canada at the time of application. Persons who have applied for
permanent resident status but have not received their government
documentation by the time of application are not eligible.
* Permanent residents of the U.S. must provide a copy of their Permanent
Resident Card with the application.
* Permanent residents of Canada must provide a copy of their Landed
Immigrant Status form with the application.

Institutional Nominations

* U.S. or Canadian institutions--including affiliated medical schools,
graduate schools, and all related hospitals and research institutes--may
nominate up to five candidates.
* BWF encourages institutions to nominate women and underrepresented
minorities. If a woman or underrepresented minority is nominated within
the initial five candidates, a sixth candidate may be nominated provided
that candidate is a woman or underrepresented minority (i.e. African
American, Hispanic, or Native American).
* NIH may nominate candidates who intend to continue their
postdoctoral/fellowship training at the NIH, but such awardees must move
to a degree-granting institution to assume a faculty position. The NIH
will support these awardees during the postdoctoral/fellowship years,
and BWF will support them for the first three years of their faculty
appointment. Their total award will be $510,000. Postdoctoral fellows at
the NIH should contact its Office of Intramural Research for information
about its nomination procedures.

During the postdoctoral and faculty periods,

* Grants must be made to degree-granting institutions in the U.S. or
Canada on behalf of the award recipient.
* Award recipients are required to devote at least 75 percent of their
time to research-related activities.
* Indirect costs may not be charged against BWF grants.

Questions regarding candidate or institutional eligibility should be
directed in advance to BWF by calling (919) 991-5134.

On another matter altogether, if anyone wishes to read it, I have a new article just out from the edited collection, Making Sense of AIDS: culture, power, and sexuality in Melanesia, called "Fear and Loathing in Papua New Guinea: sexual health in a nation under siege." It is a short social history of the national response to HIV and AIDS, and tells a very personal story about how a young woman near death from AIDS was treated by her community, from the pumpkin patch into which she was thrown after being burned to the hospital bed where she died. Contact me off-line if you wish to obtain a copy. There are about six chapters devoted to Papua New Guinea in this fine new collection, including two about SHP, one about EHP, WNB, MBP and so on.

Cheers.

Thanks Poyap & Lawrence for the positive comments!

Red`Kona` is very filthy & dusty as usual! Don't like it very much. To me it is a little hostile. Just moved from there to Seigu.

Poyap, I think the PNG Drs forum should remain. It has helped us alot & yahoo is a huge internationally known site. So this may help to bring people (volunteers mainly) to help with our struggle. It has already happened; people like Ian. I think there is nothing wrong with continuing the yahoo site. So we wil continue & build-up on this forum. The Goroka one, leave it for local discussions.

Thanks!

P.S
Please guys make use of the available spell check before posting your messages!

Just checked the website, it looks good.  I noticed also that they have a PNG Health Forum link.  Look identical to what we have here at PNGdoctors.com.  I am thinking maybe we should just merge with them and ditch the yahoo.  Ie we all just move across be member there and continue our discussion, ideas etc as usual.

Well done Willie and all other Apos.

I must add that Goroka is also leading the way in their rural outreach program under the steady Leadership of John Hari.  I was very impressed with John presentation in Rabaul.  You guys will be instrumental in reviving this much needed program.  Just a brief:  The rural outreach program has bee going on foew a year or two now and basically there are specialists and generalist employed directly under the program but based at Goroka Hospital.  These doctors plus their support staff do regular visits to the peripheral health centres primarily doing clinical work.  I hope the provincial health department (publich health guys) see the light and work closely with you all to provide public health services - like education, vaccination and etc.  APO!  I salute you all and am truely inspired by your work......

I do not know why but a space is automatically created after the fullstop that follows org. Copy paste, then delete that space & you will be able to see our website.

Actually, Mr. Robert Schilt, an AUSAID IT specialist is heading this program. He is a nice guy, married to Chimbu, dresses like an Eastern Highlander!

Cheers!

Good day everyone,

Hope all is well in your corners, whereever you all are. Internet
connection and availability varies but lets try to keep this group
alive. I have not had the time and offcourse internet excess to go
through and check new members etc but welmoe to the group, feel free to
share ieas, ask questions etc, you might get an answer.

I noticed in the paper today an ad for a workshop on PUBLIC PRIVATE
PARTNERSHIP run beyt the dept of personell management. It will be held
on the 28th August. I encourage thos in Pom to attend. I personally
feel that it is this sort of concept with private sector involvement
that is going to be the way forward for PNG

Cheers All,

Hi Rodney

Yes, it is a minority group that is committing serious crime and corrupt practices. if all honest, hard-working, and law-abiding citizens act together, these evil minority will be stomped. Th recent media releases on the special police operations to arrest those involved in the bank robberies is already a positive step forward. All like-minded citizens must work with them.

In regards to the website, that is a great idea mate. Let me know if i can contribute in one way or the other, under medical imaging science.

Cheers brata

greetings to you all. it has bee quite for a while so i want to stir
up some water.

u all a aware of deteriorating law and order situation in PNG. the
recent robbery of BSP worth over 4million kina is unbelievable.
there is even a runor that some MPs are were involved in this
robbery..how true i do not know.

anyway, today all the professional bodies in PNG including NDA
release a media statement calling on the government to implement the
revised ECP as a matter of urgency. they also recommended that those
in advisory roles in various government department be made to place
active roles and step in to weed corruption in PNG. For so there has
been lip service and the time for action has arrived.

With regards to NDA leadership, I think its time for a new leader
with a new vision. I also think the PNG Medical Society needs a new
president.

now to our website, I have already approached 2 website developers
in PNG and waiting for their quote.

My vision for the website is that it will be a source of information
for visitors coming to PNG. The information will focus on health
issues such as, immunisations, malaria prophalaxis, safe drinking
water, how to reduce your risk of being mugged, safe places to visit
or stay, and also for members to post and share their memorable
trips to PNG (with pics). So i am asking all of you to give me your
input. For those who will have time, i will ask you to write short
articles to put up. there will be section for articles written by
members. will keep u all up to date.

OH, and I will be present a short paper during the Pathology meeting
during the symposium on the use of ICT for sharing information and
networking and will share the experience of PNGdoctors group as an
example. I post an abstract to you all later.
