Hello Ian,
I do not think it will be hard for you to find yourself a job either in the Health department, UPNG, IMR or a combination of the 3. As you may well know the oncology unit in Lae is sitting dorment and has been so for many years, so the country should welcome you with open arms to come and try and make a difference in this much need area.
I believe the oncology unit would be the most appropriate place for you to be based (and lae is actually not a bad place to live - if you don't mind the rain). From what I know there is no oncology specialist in PNG and certainly none in Lae, so to have you there to lead this would be a bonus.
I think you approach of meeting up with those concerned at the comming symposium is excellent, whatever plan you have has to be coordinated with the local human and other resources, but at the same time it is time to take
this local context to a next level.
Some interested groups:
1. Students: get them involved, motivated, inpired to share your passion, they will be there when you and I are gone.
2. The womens doctors association: they have been active in lobbying the govt and in fundraising drive for the lae oncology unit.
3. The health department: Mr. Albert Kave is in charge of appointing specialist and registrar for the curative health.
Ian, great idea, hope to see fullfill your dreams and hope to be working with you in future!!

Dear Friends
I wanted to ask the group for advice.
My deep desire is to return to Papua New Guinea, and focus my attention on the development of cancer services with my experience in haematology and oncology.
My vision is going to be initially totally focussed on Cervical Cancer.
Principally because this cancer is prevalent in Papua New Guinea and preventable.
I will add my summary comments on cervical cancer in the cme section- as I promised tonight or morning to you guys!
What I need are your thoughts on how best you think I can approach gaining a job to allow me the space to advocate for this. I would like to work for the government/ UPNG (at equal pay rates after the recent online discussion- no discrimation!!!/ PNGIMR, Lae Angau
Does anyone have any useful contacts???
I will heading out for the symposium in September- and want to arrange an evening meeting to get all those passionate about cancer services together to gather a momentum to make a difference following the last conference in Lae in 2001.
Any advice would be gratefully received.
Cheers friends
Ian
