dear friends
excellent idea about the journal- widening its appeal in breadth and depth
like the new name too- more inclusive of the region
at the symposium in 2004 in a mtg with matthias sapuri- the journal was in real trouble with not enough money for printing- despite many papers and reviews for printing
i am not sure what was discussed at the 05 symposium? or whther it is now being re-published.
most journals rasie their funds in 2 ways: membership subscription and advertising from drug companies- we could certainly make a big push for subsription at the symposium this year and involve drug companies for their advertising- in order to make it a journal to be proud of. most drug companies have their base in australia- and it would be an opportunity to meet with them- presenting the journal as a unique way to access PNG doctors nationally..we could also explore web versions of the journal
we
could get in touch with the editorial committee and see what is already being done...
is anyone sending papers to the symposium in madang?
who do i email to include one- just the general email address?
cheers friends

Thanks Willie and Simon.
At the moment, the PNG medical journal is published by the PNG Medical Society. The
printing was done in Australia but in 2004 the printing was brought to PNG because it wa too
expensive.
Simon, I like the idea of a medical journal that will cover issues from Pacific Island countries,
excluding Australia. You can ask our collegues in SI and give us some feed back. Encourage
others to join our group too so that we can get a feel of their thoughts.
I belive that if the subscription rate is increased to increase the number of subsribers that
may off set some of the printing costs. That means the PNG Medical Journal has to be more
attractive, more appealing to ordinary consumers of medical research (eg clinicians, graduate
students etc) so that they will want to actually read the contents of the journal. Or increase its
circulation to other countries, institutions, groups, professional societies who have an
interest in tropical medicine.
I do not know much about how journals generate revenue but I will read around and get
some ideas for us to discuss.
