Hi! Everyone,
Since Dr. Itaki brought up the point of MMED research, I
am interested to know. As you are all aware, I have
escaped the program to end up here where my interests has
brought me. Anyway, the questions I would like to put to
the floor are these:
1. What category of research is common, clinical,
epidemiological or
purely basic medical sciences.
2. Are the resources we have at the moment sufficient for
pure medical
sciences research?
3. How are these researches co-ordinated
4. Are the research of international standards?
5. Which journals are the data/papers published in, apart
from the PNG
med journal? (Are we aware of 'impact factor' and are
we taking it
into account?)
6. Finally, is there a need for a new department at the
Medical School
to administer and co-ordinate all these research
activities under one
umbrella ?
(Yeah, I know funding problems but I am just trying to ask
if there is a need to gather all these 'lost sheeps' who
are struggling to complete the research component of their
MMED program and guide them along)
To finish off I would like to emphasize that we have the
manpower and potential to research on medical problems
which are very unique to PNG and publish papers of
international standards. Did you all know that Carleton
Gajdusek shared the 1976 noble price with Baruch Blumberg
in Medicine or Physiology for studying 'Kuru' in the
highlands of Papua New Guinea? Please read further here.

By the way some people take these findings as a scientific
proof for the existence of cannibalism in PNG. The
interpretation of the findings could be wrong or it could
be tru, who knows.
Cheers!
William
