Re: [pngdoctors-general] Comment on radiotherapy training (and Transformation PNG article)

Always willing to help VB, though internet access is a bit of a challenge at the moment.  Hopefully we should get it up at the SMHS soon.  Ian Garbett is finally here and and settling in.  VB if in Pom please feel free to pop in for a visit, chat etc.

Good luck

Thank you all for your very constructive comments. My area is physics and pretty much grounded in climate change research. I personally have advocated that it is essential for such projects to be collaborative in nature and not purely academic. Our committee is made up of the Dr Baloiloi, Dr. Kulkarni (Prof and HoD of A/Physic), Dr. Subah Dey, Dr. Renagi Sam, Dr. Laksman, Dr. Pal, Mr. Soto, Mr. Rawali and my self. Unfortunately, we do not have a medical professional to whom we can bounce ideas around. I have been admant that holistic aproach is crucial to mounting a successful program. Having said that, I will further confer with png-doctors online group to provide critics on some concrete documents to which we are currently working on.

Regards,
VB

Thanks VB for initiating this course on radiotherapy.

After my short stay at Goroka General Hospital, I realized that cancer patients are incompletely managed. There is no protocols in place. There is a guide book for chemotherapy which was used by Dr. Endican but it is has insufficient information as well as outdated.

The only option in PNG now is surgery. However, even the surgery that are done here are incomplete.
1. Less extensive
2. Improper or no lymph node clearance
3. Proper surgery may take up the entire working day for 1 single patient & involve 3 or more surgeons

Therefore, we have seen many recurrent cases after incomplete surgeries. Sadly, these cancer patients are neglected, simply because they consume too much hospital resources & the outcome is usually poor.

We may not be able to manage these group of patients satisfactorily  until after many years time or we may never.  Sadly, speaking our basic infrastructure of our hospitals are deteriorating so we may not be in a situation to build-up on it. We may have health workers going elsewhere, looking for greener pastures, further contributing to the deterioration.

Currently, the Goroka General Hospital operation theatre is closed, because of 2 simple reasons:
1. Aircondition breakdown
2. No anaesthetic SMO (only 2 ATOs)

I have been here for only 1 month now but I realize that, the officials have been going to Lae or Pom for several meetings now & our immediate problems are not fixed yet. I wonder what all these meetings are about.

Finally, I would like to urge everyone to be honest with oneself & do whatever you can to fix the immediate problems around you & do not rely on someone else to do it first and do not look beyond your immediate problems. Only then we may be able to build-up on our existing infrastructure & expand on it. Otherwise, we may be the same or going backward.

Thanks! VB keep-up the great work!

William
