Re: Needs support

Hi folks;

In terms of tangible benefits; those of us who have accrued
experience
overseas would be invaluable in passing on the lessons learned to our
colleagues back home.

By colleagues I also mean the nursing and paramedical staff.

I have been interested in education and in the times I have been back
to PNG have engaged with teaching in the local areas in an ad hoc
manner.

I believe that if we had a co-ordinated way of allowing us to move
within the main centres in PNG it would be an alternative way to
disseminate accrued knowledge.

I have concentrated on Alotau as that is where I usually head to on
holidays and occassionally to Madang but would be willing to go to
other places if we were able to set up such a program or incorporate
it
into existing structures via other agencies.

The benefit of this would be that being nationals(or those who have
lived in PNG for a while) we may be able to establish a common ground
with those that we are targetting in terms of teaching and we have an
intrinsic understanding of PNG culture as well and should be able to
adapt teaching to be effective to the target audience be it doctors,
HEOs nurses or paramedical staff.

Poyap, Rodney and Willie have diverse experiences from each other and
to be able to share this knowledge with persons on the ground would
be extremely beneficial.

Furthermore those colleagues within PNG who have developed certain
skills and knowedge should also be given the opportunity to move
within
the country so that ultimately knowledge and skills are disseminated
with the ultimate goal being a measurable change in key health
indicators.

Also I have been collecting equipment and medications for use in PNG
from the hospitals I work in here. To date I have been able to
assemble
40 full suture kits for both Madang ED and 40 for Alotau ED as well
as
drugs for ICU & ED(MAdang) and anaesthesia (Alotau).

I certainly have a lot more equipment and drugs piling up in my
garage
and will hopefully bring these to PNG when I am next on leave.

All these efforts are being undertaken in an informal way as a means
of
giving the people within our sphere of influence a better chance at
health and productivity.

If this forum and its members were able to form or facilitate these
two
aspects vis: 1. Education 2. Distribution of donated materials then I
believe we can make a difference.

Any thoughts?

Cheers and happy independence day (this Sunday).

Tim
