Re: [pngdoctors-general] Needs support

Hi All,

I think as a group we have to Identify what our main function, objectives/aims are.  We have to come up with a list of specific things that we want to achieve,  we have to find some sort of niche for ourselve that compliments institutions that are already in place like - UPNG/SMHS, plus other education institutions, the Health Department, Donar agencies etc,  we have to be seen as synergestic with these existing instituation, we have to exist in symbiosis and not antagonistic, we should not aim to replicate what is already in place.  PNG has limited HR and to be effective we have to combine our pooled knowledge.

So what should be our objective??

My thoughts:

1.  Be an information buff and link between doctors outside of PNG wheather there for training or working permenantly and doctors within PNG.  From my experience in the last 1 1/2 year in Australia, is that my naivity of how the system works here was a great disadvantage to me and if there had been such a site/forum in place where I could have gone for advise, info and assistance my stay, intergration would have been much better.  An example would be the availability of the different options in careers pathways that exist in Australia, the requirements like Exams, registrations, memberships, sharing of past exam papers, visa requirements, living expenses ect ect........

2.  Education should be the primary function of the SMHS, I would like to see the SMHS having a bigger internet presence, with its own website, with info on courses, activity, research, grandround presentations, etc, we should be partners in this.

3.  We need a proper website, ...we discussed this earlier this year, I think we should persist.

4.  We should NOT at this stage be thinking of making any money from our activities, ie we should not pursue commercial benefits for the sake of commercial benefit -- though eventually, we should welcome grants and sponsorship from donors if this eventuates.

I am sure there are other ideas out there,  but like Sioni said, we can either continue our nice chit chat or we can come up with something tangible.

Cheers

Poyap

PS
I thank Rodney once again for taking the initiative for kick starting this forum, we are still only in our infancy, but where we go from here depands on what we put into it.
Thanks Sioni for the comments!

I heard next year's symposium will be in Rabaul! However, I do not know the theme yet. I will let you guys know, once I find out.
