Hi Willie, Sioni and everyone. It was great to hear feedback on the symposium from those who attended, though it sounds like the organisation of it all could have been done a bit better, nevertheless it is still a great opportunity to meet other collegues, exchange ideas on how to improve the provision of health services in PNG.
I add my two toeas in point form:
New Health Sec. = The best man for the job at this point, but will need the help of everyone, he is just one man, and will not be affective without a good team, it is up to us to put our hands up, take a stand and be willing to do "hard yard" to make a difference. I believe he is receptive and is willing to listen to anyone one with an idea that will help.
The segment of his speech which I agree whole heartedly is the concept of disseminating medical information to ordinary people on the streets -- I believe one way of doing
this is to involve our creative arts people, perform plays, compose songs that will entertain as well as send out messages, that is what ordinary people are most likely to listen to, not boring scientific papers.
This forum and the PNG Science and technology journal are both brilliant ideas. We have discussed many issues, share ideas, some of them very "grand" and I for one am continually learining from everyone. We must build on this, what has been started. My suggestion is that while we should have big plans and ideas we have to take on challenges in "bite size" portions, so that we do not overwhelm ourselves. One cannot climb Mt. Everest in one leap, so lets take our time, plan ahead and move forward slowly but surely.
Internet is very difficult to get acces to in PNG, but I strongly believe, without a dought that to survive and be interantionally competitive especially in medicine these
days, the internet is a must. I believe we can make a good case to the New Health Sec, to make a provision for all doctors to have internet access in all Hospitals, this should be a priority.
Willies suggestion of petition to UPNG, I think for now, this would not be appropriate, I think that it is a matter for RI to take up with the UPNG, we need people as Willie rightly pointed out, and SMHS is definately an institution that needs anyong she can get.
Em sampla 2 toea blo mi. But one point I would like to emphesise before mi go em that we need to keep this forum alive, simply because it IS A GOOD THING.
I wish to comment Dr. Rodney Itaki on his contributions to making this forum as well as the PNG science & technology journal up until now. I met Rodney briefly, in Pom. but didn't get to speak to him.
However, I have heard rumours that Rodney has withdrawn from his studies in Japan & have gone back to PNG. Rodney! if you're around, we need you to confirm these rumours. I also heard that UPNG could not accept you back & that you need to re-apply. This is absurd! We need to recognise & utillize smart, enthusiastic young Drs like Rodney. We are 'killing'
our own country by playing too many 'politics' & suppressing the young upcoming Drs.
Rodney, if all of the above is true, then:
1. we need you to formally hand over your job to someone else, since internet in
PNG is too expensive but too slow.
2. we need to write a petition to UPNG authorities to accept you back since you
have contributed alot & that you have a potential to contribute more.
3. explain to us the reason for your withdrawal
Waiting to hear from you Rodney & anyone else who has any reliable information.
