Kim - Although you still have pain, I find your
situation very encouraging. The fact you are
experiencing "heaven" simply by doing stretches is
extremely positive.
Your nerve irritation was probably caused by the
tightness of the pirriformis muscle. Just doing the
stretches appears to have relieved the pressure on the
nerve.
Sounds like you have good P.T. If the problem
continues or worsens, I suggest you go to a P.T. who
can analyze your gait (this requires a tread mill &
sometimes video taping you walking on the treadmill)
and analyze your pelvic mechanics (visual & manual
exam)
Your pain may have been partly caused by years or
altered gait, that would not automatically disappear
after the knee replacement.
Keep up the good work & keep us informed.
Regarding James' situation - His is yet another case
of misdiagnosis. He did not have the typical symptoms
of P.S. when he went in for piriformis release
surgery. Once the doctor opened him up, no problem
with the piriformis was found. HOWEVER, another
condition was found & removed. He was one of those
cases where only exploratory surgery could have found
a cause for his pain.
