Hi Mary, the surgeon has done the procedure before. He
explained what he is going to do. He intends to look
for the problem in the area of the sciatic notch where
the sciatic nerve passes through the pelvis. He
intends to look at the area of the Piriformis muscle
and cut it if he finds it is likely the cause of the
problem. Of course he gave no guarantees but in
patients he has done this on before the success rate
is good. What "good" means I am not sure. Hopefully it
means there will be total or some degree of
improvement.
If it means no improvement then at least I will have
tried. If I am worse after the operation I will let
everyone know that too and they can decide if surgery
is right for them. All I know is I have not come to
the decision of surgery lightly especially considering
my history of a blood clot in the same leg in 97.
I am just so tired of the pain I do not want to live
the rest of my life like this. If I just had the
Piriformis problem I might be able to live with it but
the combination of the Phlebitis (swelling from the
blood clot) pain and the Piriformis pain is too much.
I also have arthritis in my shoulders and one elbow
that makes propping myself up on them while I lay on
my stomach to watch TV is painful too. I cannot sit
even in a reclining chair. All these factors are a
reason that I decided to opt for surgery, not just the
sciatic pain. I have to put my trust in the surgeon
and hope that he wil fix the problem.
I thank you for your concerns, I know you do not
advocate surgery.
I just know it is the right decision for me. Only time
will tell if I made the right decision.
