I joined this group because I just found a name for my problem. I have had it
for years and know how it started and how I solved the problem. It started when
I started riding BART in the San Francisco area. Sometimes the escalators shut
down and we were forced to walk up and down them unless we wanted to wait for
the elevator or take the stairs.
Escalator stairs are not like ordinary stairs. The risers are higher and the
treads are wider. They are made for riding on, not climbing on. Walking up and
down forces us to take much longer steps and I finally got to the point where I
could not walk up the escalators and had to take the stairs because stair steps
are much more conducive to walking up and down.
I had it in my right hip and learned to put my weight on my left hip while
sitting. Also I discovered the stretching my right leg so that was straight
would alleviate the pain. So for a few weeks of sitting and leaning on my left
hip while keeping my right leg straight out in front of me got rid of the pain.
But then I went to visit my niece and she had a "manufactured home" which sits
up on the foundation. It did not come with a stairway to the front door so they
had built a portable staircase which had wide treads and high risers. (She is 6
ft. tall so it worked for her). A few days at her house and my pain came back.
When I got home again I started the old practice of sitting with my right leg
outstretched and leaning on the left hip. The pain went away in about two
weeks.
