Hello All,
I had athroscopic knee surgery recently. It was the
next step in trying to discover the source of the
nerve pain I experience when sitting. A Bakers cyst
was found on a knee MRI in 2005. I had surgery in 2004
to remove vein clusters that were wrapped around the
sciatic nerve in the area of the upper thigh. The area
of the pain convinced me I had Piriformis syndrome.
The surgeon was going to release the Piriformis muscle
but when he discovered the vein clusters he removed
those and did not continue and do the Piriformis
release surgery. I wish that he had then it would have
possibly ruled out the Piriformis completely as a
source of the ongoing pain. The pain level was
decreased after the vein cluster removal surgery but
not to a level that would allow me to sit for more
than an hour.
The knee arthroscopic surgery does not appear to have
helped at all. The physiotherapist I am seeing twice a
week says it is too early to say if the surgery was
successful or not. The surgery involved opening the
aperture to the cyst to allow it to drain easier.
Evidently removing the cyst is very risky. I am now
waiting for another knee MRI to see if the cyst is
pressing on any nerves and if so they might consider
removing the cyst. The physiotherapist I am seeing is
giving me exercises to try and release the sciatic
nerve from the area where I get the most pain (at the
back of the knee)and to get the sciatic nerve to
"glide" easier throughout the leg.
James.
