Hi Drew, My name is James, originally from Stockport
U.K but now in Ontario, Canada.
You have some symptoms that could be Piriformis muscle
related by the sound of it. As you probably know the
Piriformis muscle rotates the leg to the outside (a
Charlie Chaplin kind of stance).
I was convinced I had Piriformis Syndrome but that
name only covers a mulititude of possible ailments all
clustered together to descibe a usually unknown exact
cause. The deep buttock pain is typical as are some of
the other symptoms you describe.
Sitting is usually very painful. Are you experiencing
nerve (Sciatic)pain that radiates down the back of the
leg ?
Standing after sitting is also painful. I too had
every kind of test which showed nothing more than DDD
(deteriorating disc disease) in the back but no other
back problems to speak of.
Nerve tests in the leg were also negative. Exploratory
surgery in 2004 discovered "vein clusters" trapping
the sciatic nerve in the area of the right buttock
right where the deep buttock pain and sciatic nerve
burning was coming from. The surgeon was able to put
his finger into the area of the piriformis muscle and
sciatic nerve and determined there was no nerve
entrapment there. He removed the vein clusters from
around the sciatic nerve. I am better (50%)after the
surgery and can sit for longer periods of time before
it gets too painful and the leg starts to burn. I have
also discovered (MRI)since the surgery that I have a
cyst in my knee joint that is right were most of the
pain is now centered and could be the cause of the
pain. I now have to wait a year for arthroscopic knee
surgery. I believe that the vein clusters and cyst
were the culprits although I was convinced the
Piriformis was the culprit. I took me from 2000 to
2004 to get surgery after having all the tests and
getting nowhere. Very rarely will you get a "concrete
dianosis" of Piriformis Syndrome as a syndrome is very
non specific.
If you have any more questions please do not hesitate
to ask.
James.
