Hi. I'm a long-time sciatica sufferer and have been around the block for a few
years bouncing between disk/facet/piriformis diagnosis' and I am finally
deciding (after discovering it last week) to have a Magnetic Resonance
Neurography test done. None of my doctors at the Chicago Institute of
Neurosurgery and Neuroresearch have even heard of it, so I'm having trouble
getting referred. Can you verify that this is a good diagnostic procedure? I
have not heard of anyone on the board in the last few years bring it up. There
was a great journal article describing a study using this technique to diagnose
over 200 people with sciatic pain symptoms, with prior back related cause
dianosis'. It says that this test showed that 67% of those tested had confirmed
piriformis syndrome causing the pain, with only a few percent being caused by
disc protrusions. I'm coming from Illinois to go to California for this test, so
I want to make sure that it is a valid procedure. I'm in so much down both legs
every day that working is becoming very bad (I kneel most days at work).
Sorry to be so long winded, but I'm excited to hear someone else who utilized
this procedure. I only have 'gluteal' pain/weakness on my right side, but nerve
pain is present on both sides. No steroid injections in the lumbar had any
impact on my and my mri's show slight bulging, not enough for anyone to say that
disk surgery is an option. I've been through numerous good pt's, massage
therapists, chiropractors, etc with no good results. My gluteal pain is not
always horribly bad, as it used to be, but is relieved when taking
flexeril...unfortunately nothing relieves the nerve pain except sitting on ice
on the hamstrings. (I just wanted to be thorough for Mary :) ). Thanks to anyone
out there with any relevant advice. ps...I'm a former marathon runner, during
which all of this started. Take care all....
