Subject: Re: Piriformis Syndrome
Hi,
Thanks a lot for your support. I agree that I know more than my doctor now and I
also read a research done with botox injections on 50 people. I understood the
problem has a chance to cure if it is just from the piriformis muscle, but when
this gets chronic the friction of the muscle with the sciatic nerve causes
fibroid tumours. He agreed and said this happens after surgeries also. What I
agreed with him is maybe I do not have one yet or big enough yet, to have
surgery, because I can still live without painkillers if I rest most of the
time! I also understood they get bigger in time and sciatica causes fibroids
elsewhere in the body when it is tight. I found another success story similar to
mine. I also suggest you to join this yahoo group that piriformissyndrome
patients have formed.
piriformissyndrome@yahoogroups.com . Well I am doing my
homework as you can see. I also believe I will have the surgery sooner or later.
I have some project that I want to take part in if my pain is durable after that
I will plan my surgery. Of course when I try to be active again I might suffer
more again, but I want to do this before the surgery so I will have more morals.
It involves traveling all the tsunami region and I am scared after the surgery I
might have to rest for a long time...
Take a look at this site, maybe you can put your story there I think you
should... Take Care By for now Nilgun

What Dr. Kesterson discovered when he performed the surgery is that I had a
ball of connective tissue the size of a large pea under and attatched to the
piriformis muscle digging into the sciatic nerve whenever I moved. See the
drawing below. He removed this ball of tissue.
Recovery was amazing for me because as I awoke the pain was gone for the
first time in over three years. I couldn't believe it. I was tender for
about three weeks from the incision but that was nothing in comparison to
the burning pain I had lived with for years. I am now free from pain
completely.
I'll share some tips to help the incision heal faster. I sat on a heating
pad and slept with it against my skin on low at night. This greatly reduced
the pain and inflammation. I was driving after two days and sat on a couple
of towles to prop up my left side and reduce the pressure on the right side.
I sat this way as well when I worked at my computer.
