RE: [piolusers] first post

I've had the surgery as well (Visian) four months ago and been very happy. Other
things besides halos to consider is astigmatism. I'm bad at translating axis,
but I have much (believe it or not) higher myopia than you and have high
astigmatism. Through limbal relaxing incisions, the astigmatism was halved, but
I still need to wear glasses. I could choose to have laser surgery or PKO (I
think that's the acronym) on top of it...But I doubt I'll do it. I used up all
my courage for the PIOL surgery.

I continue to worry about ethethial cell loss. I'm not spelling that right.
Because PIOLs are so new there's no long-term medical data but some early
five-year data says this type of cell loss could be an issue long-term. This is
a gamble. Do a little looking around/asking about this.

I've not heard anyone talk about this on the board, but I also worry about when
it's time for me to have cataract surgery. As a high myope, that will be
nightmare enough (I don't think any lens is adequate for my myopia) but I also
worry about the effects of having had PIOL on top of this.

BUT, all those thoughts and worries are again calculated gambles I chose to
take. And I am very happy I did. I also am thrilled with results. As someone who
has had headaches, blurred vision, and hassled with glasses every day of her
life for the past several years (since the myopia became bad enough to become a
daily issue)...I just can't tell you enough positive things about the lifestyle
change I've experienced.

From what I can tell, you are an excellent candidate for the Visian ICL or
Verisyse PIOL.

I have large pupils and see full halos at night, but they stopped bothering
me after about a month. I have drops (Alphagan) I can take to constrict the
pupils and eliminate them, but I no longer feel a need to use them.

One side effect of Alphagan I've noticed is dry eye, so if I put those in, I
can plan to put lubricating drops in every 30-60 minutes or so the rest of
the night.

Personally, I thank God every chance I get for this surgery; the outcome has
been fantastic and the side effects minimal. Best of luck with whatever you
decide!

-Brad

I just joined the group. I'm interested in this procedure and would
like to ask some questions to people who have undergone it.

I have had a very strong myopia since my late teens. I'm currently
35. I was in glasses in second grade and contacts in sixth grade.

My current glasses prescription is as follows:
(R) sphere -11.25; cyl. 0.50; axis 25
(L) sphere -12.00; cyl. 0.75; axis 10

In 2002, I was interesting in the LASIK procedure. I got a
consultation with a respected doctor in Tampa, FL. Due to my high
myopia and cornea thickness he wouldn't touch my eyes. He informed
me of a procedure under FDA approval. I now understand this to be
PIOL. I thanked him and went on my way.

Here I am 6 years later. I now live in the LA area and am interested
once again in freeing myself from glasses and contacts.

I've read generally positive results of the procedure from posts on
this group. I understand however, that the procedure is not without
potential concerns (halos, etc.).

From my current perspective, wearing high myopia corrective
contacts/glasses is no cakewalk. I have halo's, blurred
vision, "coke bottle" type embarrassment, etc. Before I sign up for
the procedure I'd like to carefully weigh the pros and cons.

Thanks.
