Antidepressants in US to carry children suicide warning starting Weds.
NBC - March 2, 2005
Starting Wednesday antidepressants sold in the US will include a
warning label about suicidal behavior in children.
The so-called "black box" labels were mandated by the Food and Drug
Administration last October.
The labels, which are reserved for the most dangerous drugs, will be
put on the five most common antidepressants. The five drugs that
carry the label are Prozac, Wellbutrin, Celexa, Paxil and Zoloft.
While only Prozac has been approved to treat children, the other
drugs are often prescribed legally as an off-label use.
The warning labels say two out of 100 children taking antidepressants
are more likely to think about or to try suicide because of the
medication.
