Europeans study Crestor safety
The News Journal, Delaware
A European Union health panel will review the safety of AstraZeneca's
Crestor cholesterol treatment and may limit the starting dose to 5
milligrams for all patients. AstraZeneca now recommends 10 milligrams
as the starting dose. Crestor, like other drugs in its class, has
been linked to severe muscle damage at higher doses. Advocacy group
Public Citizen claims the risk is higher for Crestor than for its
competitors. AstraZeneca said there was "not a safety issue" with the
10-milligram dose. AstraZeneca, with U.S. headquarters in Fairfax,
hopes to build Crestor into a blockbuster drug.
