"Bayer Could Face Criminal Investigation"
Health Talk - November 27, 2004
Bayer AG could face a criminal investigation if allegations that it
knew, downplayed or withheld information on the dangers associated
with their cholesterol-lowering drug Baycol prove to be true.
The US Food and Drug Administration is examining Bayer's drug safety
data on Baycol to determine if the allegations are true.
According to a published paper in a Journal of the American Medical
Association, drug data now in the public domain showed that Bayer
knew people taking Baycol had a significant risk of developing a
serious muscle-eating disease that could lead to death as early as
1998.
The paper says Bayer was too slow in withdrawing Baycol from the
market.
Baycol wasn't withdrawn from the market until 2001.
