Hey, my mother is an RN and works at a nursing home with a patient
who received a colostomy. The woman (I'm gonna call her Kay just
because I had to refer to her as the woman, lol) is having a very
emotional time with her new life and has been refusing to even look
at her bag. My mother has been working with her to help her gain
some independence and how has her changing it some. Kay has stated
she can never go out in public when she leaves the home and we're
trying to find out more about products for her, as we both know
nothing and my being a nursing student, want to educate myself for
future patients.
Specifically, Kay is concerned with odor and spontaneous gas
sounds/smells. Can anyone here recommend products and/or specific
cleaning/ways of cleaning that you find make your active lifestyles
easier? Also, anyone have any personal stories of triumph I could
print up and send to Kay to encourage her? I think she might be an
older woman and not have any family from what I've put together, as
my mother is keeping the identity private. We both would love to
help this woman realize how much living she can still do and boost
her self-esteem.
You are welcome to email me privately if you prefer.
Thanks,
Debi, psychology/nurse pratitioner student
