Hi:
I have been a member of this group for some time, although I read a
lot more than I write. I discovered something today that concerned
me, and I would appreciate hearing the experiences of anyone in this
group.
My wife, Sharon, had an ileostomy in 1989, after over 20 years with
ulcerative colitis. In 2002, she had a revision (ostomy site was
moved in this operation). Later in 2002, she had a hernia repaired
at the site of the revision. Although Sharon has gone through a lot
(I don't need to tell any of you that!), she had little or no nausea
after her 1989 surgery. She was nauseous after her 2002 surgery,
but that was traced to a new blood pressure medication she was
taking.
Fast forward to last month. My niece had an ileostomy on September
16, 2004, after years with ulcerative colitis. I understand that
she is in the very beginning of her recovery, and I know enough not
to expect miracles, but she is having a lot of nausea and she is
vomiting daily. She has little appetite. From what I hear, her
doctor is telling her this is normal. She is on no new meds (being
weaned of prednisone, but nothing new added). I am concerned that
the doc may be missing something.
Other than her ulcerative colitis, my niece was in good health. I
have always believed that nausea is abnormal, and one should look
for underlying causes. Do you think ongoing nausea three weeks
after surgery is normal? If not, what questions should my niece be
asking?
